Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Researches Applied to Physiology and Pathology Although there are some facts which appear strongly to prove that the vital property of the muscular tissue is independent Of the nervous system, many physiologists persist in their opposi tion to Haller's doctrine on this subject. Therefore I have thought necessary to add new proofs to those already known, and I have published many experiments, of which I shall relate here only two of the most decisive. Anaesthesia in the right side of the face. Coma, - death. Inspection The right side of the Pons is the double of its normal size it extends in front and behind, and there it passes under the right olive, compressing the neighboring parts of the encephalon and the roots of the nerves. The cause of the enlargement of the right side of the Pons was a very large clot of blood. According to Romberg, a case very much like this one is recorded by Dr R. Bright (reports of Med. Cases. Book A Manual of Experimental Physiology for Students of Medicine Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Experimental Physiology for Students of Medicine Classic Reprint written by Winfield S. Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Experimental Physiology for Students of Medicine This method of presenting the experimental sciences - chemistry, physics, and the biological sciences, including physiology, psychology, pharmacology, and pathology - is an expensive one, both as to the time and the money involved in it; but from the standpoint of pedagogy it is more economical than the text-book method, because it leads directly and surely to definite results. In answer to the question as to just what these results are which follow the modern laboratory method of instruction, it may be stated first of all that it cultivates in the student the capacity of close and accurate Observation; it affords an opportunity for valuable practice in the systematic recording of the Observations; it develops the power of logical thought in drawing tenable conclusions from the observed data; and, in the formulation of conclusions, it stimulates the ability to express the thoughts in concise and unambiguous terms. In the second place, practice of this kind makes the student independent and furnishes him with just the mental equipment needed for later life in whatever line his activities may be directed. If such an education is more important for one profession than another, the medical profession is certainly the one in which its importance is greatest. The physics, chemistry, and biology studied in preparation for medicine, and the physiology, pharmacology, and pathology of the medical course should give the student a most admirable equipment for dealing with the complex problems of clinical practice. Book The New Physiology in Surgical and General Practice Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Physiology in Surgical and General Practice The last edition was published just before the war. Needless to say we have learned a great deal in the past five years. Research in pure physiology and its applications to the clinical sciences has fallen principally into the hands of the Americans, whilst the British investigators have devoted themselves especially to problems arising out of the material presented by the wounded in the war. The results of study, observation, and experiment along both these lines are here gathered together. Much of the book is new, but the objects and scope remain as in the preface to the original edition. To make way for additional material considerable sections have been deleted altogether. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Physiology Applied to Pathology The cause of medicine has suffered, as well from the neglect of physiology, as from the defective method of teaching it. Functions have been described too much in the abstract, without a due at tention to the modifying agents of hygeine, and the gradual con version of the phenomena of health into the painful disturb ances of disease. As well might we hope to become acquaint ed with the moral nature of man, by a knowledge of his dis position ih a state of primeval innocence. For all useful and practical purposes, the nearest approach to good is made by know ing how to evade and repel evil. It is of very little moment for us to learn the precise quantity of blood circulating in the arteries and veins, the mechanismof the stomach's contraction, or the na ture of the fluid, aura, or vibration of which the nerves are condue tors. What most interests in the functions of these parts, is to be aware of the causes which unduly accelerate or disturb the action of the sanguiferous system, retard the changes ofingested substances into chyle, and modify, alter, and pervert the ability of the nervous system to receive impressions, experience sensations, and transmit the orders of volition. Mechanical physiology and the study of healthy function will doubtless prove interesting to the gentleman scholar, and the person addicted to natural history, but they are poorly calculated to meet the wants and gratify the wishes of the physician. They are as barren of results, favourable to the healing art, as a system of materia medica made up of an enumeration ofthe sensible properties of medicines, and dogmatic statements of the diseases in which they are useful, without any explanation of their mode of operation, or the variety of effects dependent on the parti onlar condition of the organs to which they are applied, and the in tensity and duration of the morbid symptoms, which they are in tended to palliate or remove. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Internal Secretory Organs: Their Physiology and Pathology The condition precedent Of any real progress on the clinical side is an exhaustive study Of the physiological side. Professor Biedl's book supplies this in a painstaking and methodical man ner. It comprises all the work of an experimental kind which has been done in any country up to within a very recent date. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology and Pathology of the Semicircular Canals: Being an Excerpt of the Clinical Studies of Dr. Robert Barany With Notes and Addenda Gathered From the Vienna Clinics Since the publication by Ewald and Hoegyes of their epoch making experiments on the semi circular canals oi animals and the discovery of the underlying laws of labyrinthine physiology, extensive researches have been conducted at the clinics of Vienna and Berlin on the human laby rinth. While the latter have been but supple mental to the classical work of the above named pioneers, they have served to reduce the subject to a practical basis and to evolve a new and valu able method of diagnosis of conditions hitherto obscure. Nystagmus, which has until recent years, been associated almost entirely with con genital or early acquired optical defects, or in an indefinite way, with lesions of the inner ear, has become one of the most important aids in differ ential diagnosis and greatly amplified the scope and efficiency of the aurist.
