The circumstance of your being a person who, from habits and education, should have been above committing so base a crime, only aggravates your guilt. However, no matter who or what you have been, you must expiate your offence on the scaffold. The law has very properly, for the safety of society, decreed the punishment of death for such crimes: our only and plain duty is to execute that law." The prisoner did not reply: he was leaning with his elbows on the front of the dock, his bowed face covered with his outspread hands; and[...]".

This book was released on 2016-09-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Experiences of a Barrister, and Confessions of an Attorney At the period referred to, Shep-keeping had not attained that degree of organization, with respect to counter-men and cashiers, which now distinguishes the great houses of trade. The primi tive till was not yet superseded. This was the weak point in Harvey's arrangements and not to make a needless number of words about it, the poor man was regularly robbed by a shep man, whose dexterity in pitching a guinea into the drawer, so as to make it jump, unseen, with a jerk into his hand, was worthy of Herr Dobler, or any other master of the sublime art of jugglery. Book excerpt: From the Number One bestselling author, a memoir full of hilarious, personal and surprising stories from their working life in the law. * The Sunday Times Bestseller * * A BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week* 'The SB is a gifted writer. Words tumble out with extraordinary fluency . . . entertaining and instructive' - The Times __________ Just how do you become a barrister? Why do only 1 per cent of those who study law succeed in joining this mysteriously opaque profession? And why might a practising barrister come to feel the need to reveal the lies, secrets, failures and crises at the heart of this world of wigs and gowns? Nothing But The Truth is The Secret Barrister's bestselling memoir. It charts an outsider's progress down the winding path towards practising at the Bar, taking in the sometimes absurd traditions of the Inns of Court, where every meal mandates a glass of port and a toast to the monarch, to the Hunger Games-style contest for pupillage, through the endlessly frustrating experience of being a junior barrister - as a creaking, ailing justice system begins to convince them that something has to change . . . Full of hilarious, shocking and surprising stories, Nothing But The Truth tracks the Secret Barrister's transformation from hang 'em and flog 'em, austerity-supporting twenty-something to campaigning, bestselling, reforming author whose writing in defence of the law is celebrated around the globe. With a keen eye for the absurd and an obsessive fondness for Twitter, SB reveals the uncomfortable truths and darkest secrets about life in our criminal courts. __________ 'With compassion, wit and intelligence, The Secret Barrister shows why is it that any of us plunge into the harrowing depths of criminal law' - TLS 'Masterful, compassionate and hilarious' - Adam Rutherford 'The Zorro of the criminal bar' - The Times

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “THE CONFESSIONS OF ARTEMAS QUIBBLE (Legal Thriller)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Confessions of Artemas Quibble tells the tale of the early 20th-century law and order, as recounted by a shady and successful New York criminal lawyer. The story begins with Quibble's reminiscences of his early life and how he decided to practice law, and later moves on to a series of anecdotes about his cases and descriptions of numerous tricks, sophistries and sundry artifices used by infamous shyster lawyers. Arthur Cheney Train (1875-1945) was an American lawyer and writer of legal thrillers, particularly known for his novels of courtroom intrigue and the creation of the fictional lawyer Mr. Ephraim Tutt, a wily old lawyer who supported the common man and always had a trick up his sleeve to right the law's injustices. Train wrote a number of novels and short stories inspired by his parallel career as a lawyer in private practice and a New York County District Attorney.

Book Some Experiences of a Barrister s Life

Download or read book Some Experiences of a Barrister s Life written by William Ballantine and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ...He was a sinewy little fellow, and born into the wbrld in the name of Martin, but he called himself Martini. His brother, he told me, was just dead, and he was looking out for another, not a real brother, but a professional one. His last brother was named Jones, and he had fallen from the trapeze and broken his neck. 'You see, ' he said, in relating the story, ' it is very difficult to get suited, as we may not know each other's tricks.' He was quite aware, he said, of the dangers of his profession, but then the salary was large and he hoped to save enough in two or Chree years to retire. He ate no meat whilst under an engagement, and never took stimulants at any time. He told me of some shocking accidents, where the sufferers were only crippled, and said that they were usually occasioned by the carelessness of the people employed in the performances. Exhibitions of the sort that this poor fellow described are a scandal to a civilised country. My friend, however, was by no means despondent, and considered his branch of the profession much higher than that of gymnasts who did not risk their lives. Whatever we may think of the taste that encourages the latter class of performers, their exhibition does not, at all events, shock humanity. My client won his verdict, but whether he succeeded in finding another relative, or what became of him afterwards, I never heard. I once remember, during a pantomime at Drury Lane, a great professor of what he called gymnastic art. He wore a mask of truly satanic appearance, and three urchins, representing imps, assisted him in his performance. I saw him between the acts in the green-room. His theatrical head was lying on a table. His own real one was very gentle and mild. The boys were tumbling; one of them...

Book Confessions of a Briefless Barrister

Download or read book Confessions of a Briefless Barrister written by Harry Mitchell QC and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an autobiography with a difference. Harry has had a very varied career, first spending five years in the Colonial Service in Sierra Leone then in a variety of posts in different industries, including a spell as company secretary to a British-owned company in India. Confessions of a Briefless Barrister is a set of chapters on different interesting aspects of his life such as National Service, Cambridge and the law, as well as other chapters that look at particular subjects such as music and sport in the way that they were significant at different periods of his life. Harry’s memoirs include accounts of his contacts with judges, prominent lawyers, chairmen and senior executives of companies, along with other national figures, and of his involvement with such major events as the nationalisation of the aircraft industry in the 1970s. The rationale of the book’s title is that although Harry was called to the Bar in 1968 and achieved the distinction of being appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1987, he always worked as a lawyer in positions of increasing seniority in different industries. A ‘briefless barrister’ is normally one who is suffering hardship because he is not being briefed to represent clients in court and is not earning – whereas Harry was briefless in the sense that he was never working as a barrister in private practice and therefore never in a position to accept briefs. He therefore happily avoided the penury that would be the concomitant of brieflessness in the normal sense. The range of Harry’s experiences goes from a brief spell as a swimming pool attendant in his student days to 16 years as Company Secretary at a major pharmaceutical multinational followed by ten years as a part-time immigration judge after retirement. He still has some involvement with the law as Honorary Legal Adviser to Migration Watch and is still active in local amateur music making. Confessions of a Briefless Barrister is a fascinating insight into Harry Mitchell’s unusually varied life and outstanding career and will appeal to fans of autobiographies.
