Book Culture Leadership and Organizations

Download or read book Culture Leadership and Organizations written by Robert J. House and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2004-04-29 with total page 849 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture, Leadership, and Organizations reports the results of a ten-year research program, the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) research program. GLOBE is a long-term program designed to conceptualize, operationalize, test, and validate a cross-level integrated theory of the relationship between culture and societal, organizational, and leadership effectiveness. A team of 160 scholars worked together since 1994 to study societal culture, organizational culture, and attributes of effective leadership in 62 cultures. Culture, Leadership, and Organizations: The GLOBE Study of 62 Societies reports the findings of the first two phases of GLOBE. The book is primarily based on the results of the survey of over 17,000 middle managers in three industries: banking, food processing, and telecommunications, as well as archival measures of country economic prosperity and the physical and psychological well-being of the cultures studied. GLOBE has several distinguishing features. First, it is truly a cross-cultural research program. The constructs were defined, conceptualized, and operationalized by the multicultural team of researchers. Second, the industries were selected through a polling of the country investigators, and the instruments were designed with the full participation of the researchers representing the different cultures. Finally, the data in each country were collected by investigators who were either natives of the cultures studied or had extensive knowledge and experience in that culture. A unique feature of this book is that while it is an edited book and many experts have written the different chapters, unlike other edited books, it is a fully integrated, seamless, and cohesive book covering the many aspects of the theory underpinning the GLOBE.

Book Diversity and Inclusion in Organizations

Download or read book Diversity and Inclusion in Organizations written by Dianna L. Stone and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The population of many nations around the world are becoming increasingly diverse (Stone-Romero, Stone, & Salas, 2003). For example, recent reports estimate that by 2060 the U. S. will become a majority minority nation (i.e., ethnic minorities including African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans will represent the majority of the population) (U. S. Bureau of Census, 2019). As a result, many U. S. and worldwide organizations will employ large number of ethnic minority group members, and will face numerous challenges associated with attracting, motivating, and retaining employees who are culturally diverse. In view of the growing cultural diversity in worldwide organizations, the primary goals of this issue are to (a) advance theory and research on diversity and inclusion in organizations, (b) present new theoretical frameworks to foster future research, and (c) consider a variety of diversity-related issues that have key implications for research and practice. It includes twelve very interesting articles that focus on an array of diversity-related issues including multiculturalism, gender, stereotypes of racial minorities, effect sizes in diversity research, diversity training, LGBT issues, age, and racial harassment, etc. For example, the first article by Dianna Stone, James Dulebohn, and Kimberly Lukaszewski discusses how differences in the cultural values of four U. S. ethnic minority groups (e.g., African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans) will influence HR policies and practices. The second article by George Dreher, Aarti Ramaswami, and Thomas Dougherty focuses on a very important issue, and considers the extent to which a life partner can act as a career catalyst (or inhibitor) and contribute to women's career attainment. The next article by Eugene Stone-Romero, Dianna Stone, Mark Hartman, and Megumi Hosoda examines the stereotypes of six ethnic groups (e.g., African-American, Mexican-American, Native American, etc.). Their results are intriguing and revealed that Anglo-Americans, Chinese-Americans, Native-Americans, and East Indian Americans were viewed most positively whereas African-American and Mexican American were viewed most negatively"--

Book excerpt: Today, it can seem as if the world has nothing but problems. And more than ever the boundaries of those problems are expanding in terms of the speed, scale, and impact by which they can alter business conditions, public governance, entire societies, the health of our planet, and the quality of our lives. Meeting these growing challenges requires ambitious new ways of designing solutions. With Expand: Stretching the Future By Design, authors Jens Martin Skibsted, a multiple-award winning designer, entrepreneur, and design philosopher, and Christian Bason, political scientist and CEO of the Danish Design Centre, take readers beyond “design thinking” to challenge current habits and carve out new space for more sustainable innovation. From transforming the ways we do business and reimagining health care, to creating planet-restoring housing and humanizing our digital lives in an age of AI, Expand explores how expansive thinking across six key areas—time, proximity, value, life, dimensions, and sectors—can provide radical, useful solutions to a whole host of current problems around the globe. With powerful real-world examples, the book challenges our freewheeling belief in technological determinism and its insensitivity toward ethics, humanity, and the environment. Expand is the first book to not just critique design thinking, but welcome it as a starting point for an ambitious, wide-ranging tale of how to expand and think beyond it. The best way to predict the future is to design it. Expand is the book that shows us how.
