Book excerpt: Several hundred nuclear scientists from more than a dozen countries met in Miami Beach, Florida, in September 1989 for a Symposium on Exotic Nuclear Spectroscopy, sponsored by the Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology of the Amencan Chemical Society. Braving five days of beckoning beaches, they presented, listened to, and discussed a series spectroscopy-both experimental and of invited papers covering the renaissance of nuclear theoretical-that has occurred during the past decade and which promises to continue well into the decade to come. This book contains the Proceedings of that Symposium on Exotic Nuclear Spectroscopy. But it is much more: During the ensuing six months, most of the pa{>ers were rewritten, polished, and/or expanded; so the resulting book is a much more fimshed, comprehensive, and up-to-date product than a general proceedings. Chapter se~uences follow the original symposium program, which, with a few exceptions, juxtaposes like topics. Each chapter can stand more or less on its own-although, as in any complex, interrelated scientific field, there are many cross-references among chapters. The manuscripts were edited and then uniformly typed in the Department of Chemistry at Michigan State University. I tried to keep the editing to a minimum so as to preserve the flavor of individual styles. A great debt of gratitude goes to those who helped make this volume possible, especially to Vada O'Donnell, who bore the largest burden of typing (and clarifying) the manuscripts.

The conference was organized by the Department of Physics and the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla with support from the Physics Departments of the Universities of Helsinki and Turku. This conference, Exotic Nuclei and Atomic Masses has now gained the status of a major nuclear physics serial conference. The previous conference was held in Bellaire, Michigan, USA. The conference was first held in 1967 in Lysekil, Sweden, then entitled Conference on Nuclei Far from Stability. ENAM2001 welcomed 270 participants from 34 countries, including 17 accompanying per sons. The content of the program was selected based on the advice of the International Advisory Committee. The Committee members read and considered 253 submitted abstracts in selecting oral contributions. During the conference week 76 invited and oral talks were given. The rest of the contributions were presented in dedicated poster sessions. Many thanks go to the speakers of oral and poster presentations for their enthusiasm and for the high quality of their work which demonstrated the liveliness of the field. Participation in the lectures was high and contributions from the audience were important towards the success of this conference. The organizers would like to especially thank Cary Davids of Argonne National Laboratory for his comprehensive summary talk, which is also included in these Proceedings.

Book excerpt: Beta-decay spectroscopy provides important information on nuclear structure and properties needed to understand topics as widely varied as fundamental nuclear astrophysics to applied nuclear reactor design. However, there are significant limitations of our knowledge due to an inability to experimentally measure everything. Therefore, it is often necessary to rely on theoretical calculations which need to be vetted with experimental results. The focus of this report will be results from experimental research performed by the Principal Investigator (PI) and his research group at Mississippi State University in which the group played the lead role in proposing, implementing, performing and analyzing the experiment. This research was carried out at both the National Superconduction Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University and the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The primary emphasis of the research was the use of \bdec spectroscopy as a tool to understand the evolution of nuclear structure in neutron-rich nuclei which could then be applied to improve theory and to increase the overall knowledge of nuclear structure.

Information presented is on the mass, radii of distribution of nuclear matter, energy levels for excited states of these nuclei, the possibility of manifestation of a halo, as well as the deformation of nuclei and the quantum properties of ground states. The position of the boundary of nucleon stability for these nuclei is considered. The effects associated with weakening and even the disappearing influence of standard magic numbers and the appearance of new ones are discussed.The results presented in the book will be useful in other fields of science as well, including astrophysics.
