Book Fisheries Management

Download or read book Fisheries Management written by Geoffrey Waugh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the problems of the modern fisheries industry is the persistent trend toward the severe depletion of fish stocks, resulting in low catch rates and poor economic returns, along with unnecessary accumulations of capital investments. Dr. Waugh argues that these problems call for effective management procedures based on bioeconomic modelling, which integrates the population dynamics of fish resources with the economic processes of harvesting and marketing. Assessing developments in bioeconomic theory, Dr. Waugh discusses why recent advances have not been fully translated into improvements in the management of marine fisheries. He cites the difficulties of reaching a consensus concerning suitable objectives for fisheries management, as well as the problems of designing a regulatory framework to improve the operation of the industry. To illustrate the utility of bioeconomic modelling, Dr. Waugh presents case studies of two Australian fisheries. A dynamic, stochastic, numeric model is developed for the Exmouth Gulf Prawn Fishery to provide insights into the optimal exploitation of a yearly resource, where fluctuations in recruitment, natural mortality, and catchability are important. The study of the New South Wales Abalone Fishery highlights the difficulties of obtaining the necessary overview of a fishery and the problems in collecting the data required for modelling and management.

Book Marine Invertebrate Fisheries

Download or read book Marine Invertebrate Fisheries written by John F. Caddy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1989-01-17 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems Analysis and Simulation in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences William E. Grant This hands-on approach provides guidance to the step-by-step applications of systems analysis and simulation to questions about ecological systems. At the same time, it explains general principles without requiring that readers have a strong background in mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Chapter 1 traces the development of systems ecology introducing basic concepts, while Chapters 2 through 5 present the four phases of systems analysis: conceptual model formulation, quantitative specification of the model, model validation, and model use. 1986 (0 471-89236-X) 338 pp. Bioeconomic Modelling and Fisheries Management Colin W. Clark Discusses the management of commercial marine fisheries and the relationship between the economic forces affecting the fishing industry and the biological factors that determine the production and supply of fish in the sea. Topics focus on methods of preventing overfishing and overcapitalization, economically effective and practical forms of regulation, management of developing fisheries, natural fluctuations of fish stocks, and complexities of marine ecosystems. 1985 (0 471-87394-2) 291 pp. Methods in Marine Zooplankton Ecology Makoto Omori and Tsutomu Ikeda Encompassing basic principles, procedures, and research problems, this book serves as a complete guide to current methods used in the study of marine zooplankton. The techniques are equally applicable to small organisms and to the larval stages of larger, commercially important organisms. Chapters start with a brief, but well-summarized introduction to zooplankton, followed by field sampling strategies and laboratory methods, and then conclude with estimates of productivity and analysis of community structure. Each method is described in detail, including a discussion of the problems inherent in using it. 1984 (0 471-80107-0) 322 pp.

Book Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture 2 Volumes

Download or read book Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture 2 Volumes written by Bruce F. Phillips and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 1075 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive review of the current and future effects of climate change on the world’s fisheries and aquaculture operations The first book of its kind, Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture explores the impacts of climate change on global fisheries resources and on marine aquaculture. It also offers expert suggestions on possible adaptations to reduce those impacts. The world's climate is changing more rapidly than scientists had envisioned just a few years ago, and the potential impact of climate change on world food production is quite alarming. Nowhere is the sense of alarm more keenly felt than among those who study the warming of the world's oceans. Evidence of the dire effects of climate change on fisheries and fish farming has now mounted to such an extent that the need for a book such as this has become urgent. A landmark publication devoted exclusively to how climate change is affecting and is likely to affect commercially vital fisheries and aquaculture operations globally, Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture provides scientists and fishery managers with a summary of and reference point for information on the subject which has been gathered thus far. Covers an array of critical topics and assesses reviews of climate change impacts on fisheries and aquaculture from many countries, including Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Chile, US, UK, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, India and others Features chapters on the effects of climate change on pelagic species, cod, lobsters, plankton, macroalgae, seagrasses and coral reefs Reviews the spread of diseases, economic and social impacts, marine aquaculture and adaptation in aquaculture under climate change Includes special reports on the Antarctic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea Extensive references throughout the book make this volume both a comprehensive text for general study and a reference/guide to further research for fisheries scientists, fisheries managers, aquaculture personnel, climate change specialists, aquatic invertebrate and vertebrate biologists, physiologists, marine biologists, economists, environmentalist biologists and planners.
