Book Tribology and Mechanics of Magnetic Storage Devices

Download or read book Tribology and Mechanics of Magnetic Storage Devices written by Bharat Bhushan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since January 1990, when the first edition ofthis first-of-a-kind book appeared, there has been much experimental and theoretical progress in the multi disciplinary subject of tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage devices. The subject has matured into a rigorous discipline, and many university tribology and mechanics courses now routinely contain material on magnetic storage devices. The major growth in the subject has been on the micro- and nanoscale aspects of tribology and mechanics. Today, most large magnetic storage industries use atomic force microscopes to image the magnetic storage components. Many companies use variations of AFMs such as friction force microscopes (FFMs) for frictional studies. These instruments have also been used for studying scratch, wear, and indentation. These studies are valuable in the fundamental understanding of interfacial phenomena. In the second edition, I have added a new chapter, Chapter 11, on micro and nanoscale aspects of tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage compo nents. This chapter presents the state of the art of the micro/nanotribology and micro/nanomechanics of magnetic storage components. In addition, typographical errors in Chapters 1 to 10 and the appendixes have been corrected. These additions update this book and make it more valuable to researchers of the subject. I am grateful to many colleagues and particularly to my students, whose work is reported in Chapter 11. I thank my wife, Sudha, who has been forbearing during the progress of the research reported in this chapter.

Book Mathematical Topics in Fluid Mechanics Volume 1 Incompressible Models

Download or read book Mathematical Topics in Fluid Mechanics Volume 1 Incompressible Models written by Pierre-Louis Lions and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1996-06-27 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most challenging topics in applied mathematics over the past decades has been the development of the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations. Many of the problems in mechanics, geometry, probability, etc. lead to such equations when formulated in mathematical terms. However despite a long history of contributions, there exists no central core theory, and the most important advances have come from the study of particular equations and classes of equations arising in specific applications. This two volume work forms a unique and rigorous treatise on various mathematical aspects of fluid mechanics models. These models consist of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations like the incompressible and compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The main emphasis in Volume 1 is on the mathematical analysis of incompressible models. After recalling the fundamental description of Newtonian fluids, an original and self-contained study of both the classical Navier-Stokes equations (including the inhomogeneous case) and the Euler equations is given. Known results and many new results about the existence and regularity of solutions are presented with complete proofs. The discussion contains many interesting insights and remarks. The text highlights in particular the use of modern analytical tools and methods and also indicates many open problems. Volume 2 will be devoted to essentially new results for compressible models. Written by one of the world's leading researchers in nonlinear partial differential equations, Mathematical Topics in Fluid Mechanics will be an indispensable reference for every serious researcher in the field. Its topicality and the clear, concise and deep presentation by the author make it an outstanding contribution to the great theoretical problems in science concerning rigorous mathematical modelling of physical phenomena.

Book Fluid And Solid Mechanics

Download or read book Fluid And Solid Mechanics written by Frank Smith and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book leads readers from a basic foundation to an advanced-level understanding of fluid and solid mechanics. Perfect for graduate or PhD mathematical-science students looking for help in understanding the fundamentals of the topic, it also explores more specific areas such as multi-deck theory, time-mean turbulent shear flows, non-linear free surface flows, and internal fluid dynamics.Fluid and Solid Mechanics is the second volume of the LTCC Advanced Mathematics Series. This series is the first to provide advanced introductions to mathematical science topics to advanced students of mathematics. Edited by the three joint heads of the London Taught Course Centre for PhD Students in the Mathematical Sciences (LTCC), each book supports readers in broadening their mathematical knowledge outside of their immediate research disciplines while also covering specialized key areas.
