Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exiles of Eternity: An Exposition of Dante's Inferno I take the opportunity of the issue of a new edition to express my gratitude for the kindly reception given to this volume. My hope of completing the exposition of the great poem is now fulfilled in the two volumes Prisoners of Hope and In Patria. During the course of my work on the Purgatorio and the Paradiso, I have seen no reason to think that the expository method which I adopted in the Exiles is mistaken. The new edition is therefore issued without alteration, because, while there are indeed many points of detail which I could have wished to change, I adhere to the substance of the exposition as a whole. There are, however, two subjects which further study has made clearer to my mind; and although perhaps they are not strictly relevant to a Preface, I venture to insert them here in the hope that some light may be thrown on points of difficulty. 1. The first is the place which the Virgin Mary occupies in Dante's salvation. This, of course, is obvious in the Purgatorio: on every Terrace of the Mount one of her virtues is held up as the ideal. Book excerpt: "The subtitle of this volume indicates sufficiently its scope and purpose. While there exist many admirable essays, commentaries, and general introductions to the study of Dante, I am not aware of anything in the way of an exposition, canto by canto, as simple and popular as the nature of the subject allows. Such an exposition it has been my aim to supply."--from the original Preface.

Book excerpt: Revealing Bodies turns to the eighteenth century to ask a question with continuing relevance: what kinds of knowledge condition our understanding of our own bodies? Focusing on the tension between particularity and generality that inheres in intellectual discourse about the body, Revealing Bodies explores the disconnection between the body understood as a general form available to knowledge and the body experienced as particularly one's own. Erin Goss locates this division in contemporary bodily exhibits, such as Gunther von Hagens' Body Worlds, and in eighteenth-century anatomical discourse. Her readings of the corporeal aesthetics of Edmund Burke's Philosophical Enquiry, William Blake's cosmological depiction of the body's origin in such works as The First] Book of Urizen, and Mary Tighe's reflection on the relation between love and the soul in Psyche; or, The Legend of Love demonstrate that the idea of the body that grounds knowledge in an understanding of anatomy emerges not as fact but as fiction. Ultimately, Revealing Bodies describes how thinkers in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and bodily exhibitions in the twentieth and twenty-first call upon allegorized figurations of the body to conceal the absence of any other available means to understand that which is uniquely our own: our existence as bodies in the world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Time and Eternity: A Tale of Three Exiles Mr. Perekatov struck a match, burned his fingers, growled, lit another. As he held it in the cup of his huge hairy hands its light revealed a massive Jewish face, a long delicate nose, thick, sensitive lips, a heavy blue chin and tragic, short-sighted eyes. Opening his hands he held the light up to the door and found the number he was seeking - 33. "That's good!" he said, looking up the dark street, and he knocked on the door. He heard light footsteps on the stairs, the door was opened and a woman stood in the light of a guttering candle. The hall and stairs were dirty, but the woman was neat in her petticoat and bed-jacket, and Mr. Perekatov guessed at once that she was French. He removed his hat and asked: "Mr. Stephen Lawrie?" "I think he is in," said the woman, and she reached out and knocked on an inner door. Mr. Perekatov noticed with relief that she was middle-aged, sober and self-possessed. Book excerpt: In 1984 SUNIL GUPTA?s first long term relationship broke down in shortly after he arrived in London in 1984. He had met his lover in the early 1970?s when the impact of the gay movement upon the consciousness of gay men was just gaining ground.00Then, gay was good, and gay was proud. The laws against gay sex had been turned back. The definition of homosexuality as a psychiatric disorder was successfully challenged. The commercial scene and the visibility of gay men expanded to unprecedented levels. Although, while all this change provided the individual with the means for unstigmatised sexual experimentation in relatively safe venues, simultaneously it hardly dented social attitudes and legal structures which oppressed gay relationships. 00The arrival of HIV/AIDS changed all that. Gay men came under attack, from the state and its various channels. The media mounted a vicious campaign to label gay men as sick and irresponsible. 00?These photographs were made in London. The couples define themselves as such by various criteria; some live together, some don?t, some have been together a short time, some a very long time, and soon. I believe the relationship between gay men is an important but often neglected component central to their lives.? - Sunil Gupta.

Book Refugees and Knowledge Production

Download or read book Refugees and Knowledge Production written by Magdalena Kmak and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-13 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on research within the fields of exile studies and critical migration studies and drawing links between historical and contemporary ‘refugee scholarship’, this volume challenges the bias of methodological nationalism and Eurocentrism in discussing the multifaceted forms of knowledge emerging in the context of migration and mobility. With critical attention to the meaning, production and scope of ‘refugee scholarship’ generated at the institutions of higher education, it also focuses on ‘refugee knowledge’ produced outside academia, and scrutinizes the conditions according to which it is validated or silenced. Presenting studies of historical refuge and exile, together with the experiences of contemporary refugee scholars, this book will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in forced migration, refugee studies, the sociology of knowledge and the phenomenon of ‘insider’ knowledge, and research methods and methodology.
