Book Exercises in Practical Chemistry

Download or read book Exercises in Practical Chemistry written by Augustus George Vernon-Harcourt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Practical Chemistry: Series I, Qualitative Exercises In Part I, Sect. V, which gives directions for the performance of experiments upon salts of the principal metallic and non-metallic radicles, the operations are described in less detail, both because they are simpler and more uniform in character, and because something may fairly be left to the experience the student has gained. In this section the experiments described are chiefly such as find some application in the course of qualitative analysis which follows. The division into exercises is not continued, since the experiments with each radicle form a separate group, and one or more of these can be performed at the same time, as may be found convenient. Part II gives the course to be followed in the analysis of a single salt, for the outline of which the authors are mainly indebted to Fresenius' Qualitative Analysis.' Book Problems for General Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis

Download or read book Problems for General Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis written by C. J. Nyman and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1980-03-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough revision of this successful problem book, providing a clear, concise, and careful presentation of simple and direct methods for solving numerical problems that illustrate chemical principles . . . using dimensional analysis throughout and including numerous worked examples. Strict adherence to significant figures is observed in numerical solutions; problems are presented with difficulty levels ranging from straightforward to challenging--with answers to all numerical problems found in an appendix. Also introduces SI units.

Book Exercises in Quantitative

Download or read book Exercises in Quantitative written by W. Dittmar and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Quantitative: Chemical Analysis, With a Short Treatise on Gas Analysis A preliminary edition of this book, as many of my friends are aware, was issued a little over a year ago for the benefit of chiefly my own students. That edition, however, was little more than a reproduction of what had long had currency in my laboratory as a trypographed book. Hence this volume may be introduced as having already been used - and I hope not without success - in a largely-attended teaching laboratory for a series of years. However it may stand with analysis generally, quantitative analysis can be taught only by examples; and in the earlier stages of the course the technicalities of the subject are the principal things to be taught. Hence our exercises on "analytical methods" (section 2) are arranged, not according to any scientific system, but so that, at any given point of his progress, the student has become familiar with as many different operations as could have been learned during the time. To some of my readers the tone of the earlier exercises more especially may savour a little of mechanical drilling. Why tell the student so minutely what he has to do and hinder him from exercising his own ingenuity? Some ten years ago, if a book like the present had been placed before me, I should have asked this question myself. But I have since come to modify my views. The technicalities of quantitative analysis are the very things which the student is not likely to find out by himself. He had better be drilled into doing them correctly. What is the good, for instance, of letting him spoil a series of ammonia determinations by mismanaging his chloro-platinate precipitates? It surely is better to show him quite directly what he has to do; and if it is, why should not the book tell him, and thus save the time of the teacher? No fear of any talented student being spoiled by a course of judicious drilling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The second edition includes a thermochemistry experiment on the solvation of urea, an updated Laboratory Equipment and Techniques section, selective report questions, prelaboratory exercises, and Further Reading references. Each experiment has a well-defined objective that underscores a basic chemical tenet while providing a reliable, reproducible and satisfying result. Students perform essential laboratory techniques such as weighing, titration, glass-working, and informed calculations based on experimental data. Professional conduct including approaches to safety rules, chemical disposal and storage, organization, and neatness in laboratory operations are integral to each experiment. Through the assembly of scientific apparatus leading to the observation of chemical reactions, this laboratory course stimulates an interest in chemical phenomena. The use of "unknowns" and the use of specific laboratory techniques applied to solve practical problems demonstrate the investigative nature of chemistry. Through these exercises, students learn that even the most precise scientific measurements are subject to uncertainty. Students learn to distinguish between experimental errors, uncertainties, and "blunders." The importance of error analysis is introduced at an early stage. The exercises within this manual may be used in an independent laboratory course, separate from lecture, or in conjunction with a variety of textbooks. This manual is designed for an instructor to schedule experiments that meet the demands of many varied and different student groups. The laboratory experiments include basic principles, techniques of separation and identification; moles, and stoichiometry; chemical thermodynamics; electron transfer; acid-base equilibria; kinetics and physical properties of matter; and synthesis and characterization of inorganic compounds and complex ions. Parts of the manual are designed to take advantage of the vastly increased computing power offered by smart phones, computer tablets, and personal computers. For example, the treatment of uncertainty and error analysis is an optional exercise in Experiments 10 and 21. Instructors may choose any suitable sequence of laboratory exercise to fulfill general chemistry course requirements. For example an instructor may find that the sequence 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 6, 12, 19 best fits a particular course. By using Experiments 22-25, it is possible to include qualitative analysis or identification of ions without using a formal qualitative analysis scheme.
