Download or read book Scent of the Missing written by Susannah Charleson and published by HMH. This book was released on 2010-04-14 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “haunting meditation on trust, hope and love” by a woman who adopts and trains a Golden Retriever puppy to become a search-and-rescue dog (People). In the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing, Susannah Charleson’s attention was caught by a newspaper photograph of a canine handler, his exhausted face buried in the fur of his search-and-rescue dog. Susannah, a dog lover and pilot with search experience herself, was so moved by the image that she decided to volunteer with a local canine team, plunging herself into an astonishing new world. While the team worked long hours for nonexistent pay and often heart-wrenching results, Charleson discovered the joy of working in partnership with a canine friend and the satisfaction of using their combined skills to help her fellow human beings. Once she qualified to train a dog of her own, Charleson adopted Puzzle—a smart, spirited Golden Retriever puppy who exhibited unique aptitudes as a working dog, but was a bit less interested in the role of compliant house pet. Scent of the Missing is the story of Charleson’s adventures with Puzzle as they search for a lost teen; an Alzheimer’s patient wandering in the cold; and signs of the crew amid the debris of the space shuttle Columbia disaster—all while unraveling the mystery of the bond between humans and dogs. “A riveting view of both the human animal bond and the training of search and rescue dogs. All dog lovers and people interested in training service dogs should read this book.” —Temple Grandin, author of Animals Make Us Human
Download or read book The Executive Guru written by D. Patrick Georges and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-01-12 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are all familiar with the glass ceiling blocking womens access to top corporate positions. But there is another largely unknown glass ceiling that blocks both womens and mens efforts to achieve optimum results. It is made up of invisible factors such as expectations, beliefs and the energy needed to carry out ones plans and decisions. By now, even kids know the habits of highly effective people, but what about their secret habits? This book is the result of research conducted following the frustration caused by the authors inability to answer certain irritating questions faced during his 30-year career as manager and consultant. Why, despite conscientious efforts, sometimes effective managers fail to achievecertain attainable goals? Why do intelligent and educated people sometimes say or do dumb things? What is the use of sending people to training courses, if they do not expect to derive any benefits or do not believe they are capable of improving performance? What is the importance and interrelationship of self-image and self-esteem in personal development? Are there ways of improving managerial performance other than by using conventional management skills? Could improved performance perhaps be attained by tapping into the vast resources of the unconscious mind? Such questions, coupled with the painful shock caused by downsizing and outsourcing organizations and a diminishing sense of job security, have also made increasing numbers of people seek answers and comfort within themselves. As well, an increasing number of people expect work to provide them not only with a paycheck, but also with fulfillment. And it is not only individuals who seek to access the vast resources that may exist within each one of us. Major corporations have begun looking for ways to improve the bottom line through spirituality, while the Spirituality in the Workplace theme now appears on business conference agendas. But do we need gurus at work? Empirical evidence suggests that fulfillment and creativity are related to an energy source commonly referred to as "spirit." Apparently, results of using traditional management tools may be enhanced, if we marshal our latent mental energies and incorporate new approaches to performance management, focusing on factors that may help us smash the unconscious glass ceiling blocking the achievement of optimum results. Businesses, training organizations, government agencies and the media have been following the movement towards exploration of inner space, a topic that--regardless of preconceived notions and skeptics reservations--merits the attention of business leaders. Spirituality is a sensitive issue, and some workers already resent such corporate programs because they consider them an intrusion into their private spiritual world. The Executive Guru may serve as a down-to-earth guide for those interested in examining complementary ways of developing their potential or dealing with the rapid changes and stresses of our times. It is written in parable form, hopefully making it an easier read than a straight-forward management book after a hard day at work. The story is that of an effective manager baffled by requests from staff to attend off-site training courses with mystifying names: Huna, Neurolinguistics, Reiki, Timeline Programming. He seeks advice from a guru who surprisingly provides him with businesslike answers backed by scientific evidence. The manager is convinced that there is more out there than meets the eye and decides to add the gurus lessons to his arsenal of management tools. Reading management books and attending conventional training courses may have helped you to take charge of your work by using more effective managerial skills. This book will provide you with businesslike ideas on complementary approaches to increased creativity, personal development and fulfillment

Book excerpt: In 1963, Dick Portillo built a 6' x 12' trailer with no running water or bathroom and opened a simple hot dog stand in Villa Park, Illinois. He called it "The Dog House." More than 50 years and 50 locations later, his namesake Portillo's restaurants are a Windy City institution, famous for perfect, Chicago-style dogs. In Out of the Dog House, Portillo tells the incredible story of his life, sharing the ingenuity and hard-earned wisdom that went into building a beloved restaurant chain. From a modest childhood as the son of Greek and Mexican immigrants, to the core principles that became essential in growing a national business, this is a singular, at times surprising, tale of how one man crafted his own American dream, one hot dog at a time.

Download or read book The Diary of Dawid Sierakowiak Five Notebooks from the Lodz Ghetto written by Dawid Sierakowiak and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996-11-07 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the evening I had to prepare food and cook supper, which exhausted me totally. In politics there's absolutely nothing new. Again, out of impatience I feel myself beginning to fall into melancholy. There is really no way out of this for us." This is Dawid Sierakowiak's final diary entry. Soon after writing it, the young author died of tuberculosis, exhaustion, and starvation--the Holocaust syndrome known as "ghetto disease." After the liberation of the Lodz Ghetto, his notebooks were found stacked on a cookstove, ready to be burned for heat. Young Sierakowiak was one of more than 60,000 Jews who perished in that notorious urban slave camp, a man-made hell which was the longest surviving concentration of Jews in Nazi Europe. The diary comprises a remarkable legacy left to humanity by its teenage author. It is one of the most fastidiously detailed accounts ever rendered of modern life in human bondage. Off mountain climbing and studying in southern Poland during the summer of 1939, Dawid begins his diary with a heady enthusiasm to experience life, learn languages, and read great literature. He returns home under the quickly gathering clouds of war. Abruptly Lodz is occupied by the Nazis, and the Sierakowiak family is among the city's 200,000 Jews who are soon forced into a sealed ghetto, completely cut off from the outside world. With intimate, undefended prose, the diary's young author begins to describe the relentless horror of their predicament: his daily struggle to obtain food to survive; trying to make reason out of a world gone mad; coping with the plagues of death and deportation. Repeatedly he rallies himself against fear and pessimism, fighting the cold, disease, and exhaustion which finally consume him. Physical pain and emotional woe hold him constantly at the edge of endurance. Hunger tears Dawid's family apart, turning his father into a thief who steals bread from his wife and children. The wonder of the diary is that every bit of hardship yields wisdom from Dawid's remarkable intellect. Reading it, you become a prisoner with him in the ghetto, and with discomfiting intimacy you begin to experience the incredible process by which the vast majority of the Jews of Europe were annihilated in World War II. Significantly, the youth has no doubt about the consequence of deportation out of the ghetto: "Deportation into lard," he calls it. A committed communist and the unit leader of an underground organization, he crusades for more food for the ghetto's school children. But when invited to pledge his life to a suicide resistance squad, he writes that he cannot become a "professional revolutionary." He owes his strength and life to the care of his family.

Book excerpt: "One Good Dog is a wonderful novel: a moving, tender, and brilliantly crafted story about two fighters—one a man, one a dog— hoping to leave the fight behind, who ultimately find their salvation in each other. Susan Wilson's clear and unflinching style is perfectly suited for her story that strips away the trappings and toys we all hide behind, and exposes our essential need to give and accept love in order to thrive."—Garth Stein, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain Adam March is a self-made "Master of the Universe." He has it all: the beautiful wife, the high-powered job, the glittering circle of friends. But there is a price to be paid for all these trappings, and the pressure is mounting—until the day Adam makes a fatal mistake. His assistant leaves him a message with three words: your sister called. What no one knows is that Adam's sister has been missing for decades. That she represents the excruciatingly painful past he has left behind. And that her absence has secretly tormented him all these years. When his assistant brushes off his request for an explanation in favor of her more pressing personal call, Adam loses it. And all hell breaks loose. Adam is escorted from the building. He loses his job. He loses his wife. He loses the life he's worked so hard to achieve. He doesn't believe it is possible to sink any lower when he is assigned to work in a soup kitchen as a form of community service. But unbeknownst to Adam, this is where his life will intersect with Chance. Chance is a mixed breed Pit Bull. He's been born and raised to fight and seldom leaves the dirty basement where he is kept between fights. But Chance is not a victim or a monster. It is Chance's unique spirit that helps him escape and puts him in the path of Adam. What transpires is the story of one man, one dog, and how they save each other—in ways they never could have expected.
