Particular attention will be paid to the problems of international economic at both the commercial and monetary level. integration Students will be able to read and interpret the balance of payments of a country, evaluating the various types of balance, to explain the behaviour of commercial fiows in the light of the theories studied, to analyze fiows of financial assets according to interest-rate differentials and other elements, to study the forces that determine exchange rates and cause currency crises, to understand the reasons behind international economic integration such as the European Union, to evaluate the effects of national and international policies.

Book The Exchange Rate in a Dynamic Optimizing Current Account Model with Nominal Rigidities

Download or read book The Exchange Rate in a Dynamic Optimizing Current Account Model with Nominal Rigidities written by Robert Miguel W. K. Kollman and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies dynamic-optimizing model of a semi-small open economy with sticky nominal prices and wages. The model exhibits exchange rate overshooting in response to money supply shocks. The predicted variability of nominal and real exchange rates is roughly consistent with that of G-7 effective exchange rates during the post-Bretton Woods era. The model predicts that a positive domestic money supply shock lowers the domestic nominal interest rate, that it raises output and that it leads to a nominal and real depreciation of the country’s currency. Increases in domestic labor productivity and in the world interest rate too are predicted to induce a nominal and real exchange rate depreciation.

Book The Monetary Approach to the Exchange Rate

Download or read book The Monetary Approach to the Exchange Rate written by Mr.Mark P. Taylor and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1992-05-01 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We re-examine the monetary approach to the exchange rate from a number of perspectives, using monthly data on the deutschemark-dollar exchange rate. Using the Campbell-Shiller technique for testing present value models, we reject the restrictions imposed upon the data by the forward-looking rational expectations monetary model. We demonstrate, however, that the monetary model is validated as a long-run equilibrium condition. Moreover, imposing the long-run monetary model restrictions in a dynamic error correction framework leads to exchange rate forecasts which are superior to those generated by a random walk forecasting model.

Volume 2A covers innovations in methodologies, specifically macroforecasting and forecasting financial variables. Volume 2B investigates commercial applications, with sections on forecasters' objectives and methodologies. Experts provide surveys of a large range of literature scattered across applied and theoretical statistics journals as well as econometrics and empirical economics journals. The Handbook of Economic Forecasting Volumes 2A and 2B provide a unique compilation of chapters giving a coherent overview of forecasting theory and applications in one place and with up-to-date accounts of all major conceptual issues. Book Exchange Rate Forecasting Techniques Survey Data and Implications for the Foreign Exchange Market

Download or read book Exchange Rate Forecasting Techniques Survey Data and Implications for the Foreign Exchange Market written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1990-04-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper seeks to advance the discussion of monetary policy strategies in several ways. One involves a comparison of targets for nominal GNP and the price level, with emphasis on specificational robustness and implications for output variability. A second pertains to various “indicator” variables recently suggested by Federal Reserve officials. In this regard, a careful review of the relevant conceptual distinctions--concerning instruments, targets, indicators, etc.--is required. Finally, the proposal that strategy should be conducted so as to place minimal reliance on quantity variables is given attention, in the context of evidence concerning the merits of an interest rate instrument.

Book Econometric Model Performance

Download or read book Econometric Model Performance written by Lawrence R. Klein and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Models of the American economy exist in government, research institutes, universities, and private corporations. Given the proliferation, it is wise to take stock because these models come from diverse sources and describe different conditions from alternative points of view. They could be saying different things about the economy. The high-level comparative studies in this volume, gathered from several issues of the International Economic Review, with a substantive introduction and the addition of more comparative material, evaluate the performance of eleven models of the American economy: the Wharton Mark Ill Model; Brookings Model; Hickman-Coen Annual Model; Liu-Hwa Monthly Model; Data Resources, Inc. (DRI) Model; Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Model; Michigan Quarterly Econometric (MOEM) Model; Wharton Annual and Industry Model; Anticipation Version of the Wharton Mark Ill Model/Fair Model; U.S. Department of Commerce (BEA) Model. Each of the proprietors or builders of these models describes his own system in his own words. These studies come closer than ever before to standardizing model operations for testing purposes. Some of the models are monthly, while others are annual. but the quarterly unit of time is the most frequent. Some are demand oriented, others are supply oriented, and focus on the input-output sectors of the economy. Some use only observed. objective data; others use subjective. anticipatory data. Both large and small models are included. In spite of the diversity, the contributors have cooperated to trace the differences between their models to root causes and to report jointly the results of their research. There are also some general papers that look at model performance from outside the CEME group.
