Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Absorption, excitation, continuous fluorescence, and pulse fluorescence measurements were made on ruby samples with 0.94% and 2.1% Cr+3 in the temperature range from 4.2K up to 700K. The widths, positions, intensities, and lifetimes of the R and N fluorescence lines were determined at numerous temperatures. The results for the temperature dependence of the linewidths are explained in terms of microscopic strains, Raman scattering of phonons by the impurity ions, and direct phonon processes. The results for the lineshifts with temperature are due to the absorption and emission of virtual phonons. The observed lifetimes of the R and N lines coincide in the temperature range where the systems are thermalized and the observed decays are pure exponentials. At temperatures where the systems are decoupled, an initial rise in fluorescence is observed at the N lines. The subsequent decay has the lifetime of the R lines for a 0.94% sample and the lifetime of the N lines for a 2.1% sample. These results are also explained in terms of energy transfer from single ions to pairs. The effects of reabsorption on the fluorescence spectrum are also discussed. (Author).

This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Book excerpt: This book focuses mainly on the spectroscopy of laser materials, physics of laser materials, laser crystals and laser glasses. The spectroscopic and laser properties of rare earth and transition metal ion-doped solid state materials are systematically described based on modern quantum optics. The aim of this book is to relate the laser and spectroscopic properties to the structure and chemical composition of materials. It emphasises the nonlinear optical effects in laser materials, which are widely used in high power laser systems. The development of advanced solid state laser devices depends greatly on new laser materials. Much progress has been made recently in the development of new laser materials, and this is summarized in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume we have attempted to present a concise survey of the spectroscopic properties of insulators as derived from the application of tunable laser spectro scopic techniques. As has been the case in gaseous atomic spectroscopy, the use of tunable lasers has allowed the extension and the refmement of optical measure ments in the condensed phases to unprecedented resolutions in the frequency and temporal domains. In turn, this firmer base of empirical fmdings has led to a more sophisticated theoretical understanding of the spectroscopy of optically excited states with major modifications being apparent in the area of their dynamic be havior. Yet the revivalistic nature of these advances implies that additional advan ces are to be expected as the techniques and developments outlined in this volume are put to widespread use. Regardless, it is our hope and that of our distinguished colleagues in this venture that the reviews presented here will be useful to neo phytes and veterans to this field alike - to the former as a laissez-passer into solid-state spectroscopy, to the latter as a useful synopsis and reference of recent developments. We have also attempted to expose the reader to the concept that optically active materials, be they organic or inorganic, as universality would require, be have in a like manner and, though terminology may vary in detail, the outline and general features of all insulators remain constant.

This book was released on 1995-11-07 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review volume presents new developments in the preparation, physical characterization and applications of insulating materials for Optoelectronics. Insulators occupy a leading position as laser and optical amplifier hosts, electrooptic and acoustooptic modulators, frequency doublers and optical parametric oscillators, photorefractive devices and radiator detectors. These applications rely heavily on the development of advanced techniques for the preparation of both bulk and waveguide structures, the adequate knowledge of the microscopic behaviour defects, impurities and a thorough understanding of their response to electromagnetic fields. All these topics relating basic physicochemical aspects and applied performance are authoritatively discussed in the book.

Download or read book Optical Properties of Excited States in Solids written by Baldassare di Bartolo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an account of the course "Optical Properties of Excited States in Solids" held in Erice, Italy, from June 16 to 3D, 1991. This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The purpose of this course was to present physical models, mathematical formalisms and experimental techniques relevant to the optical properties of excited states in solids. Some active physical species, such as ions or radicals, could survive indefinitely if they were completely 'isolated in space. Other active species, such as excited molecular and solid-state systems, are inherently unstable, even in isolation, due to the spontaneous mechanisms that may convert their excitation energies into radiation or heat. Physical parameters that may be used to characterize these excited systems are the localization or delocalization, and the coherence or incoherence, of their state excitations. In solids the excited states, whether they are localized (as for impurities in insulators) or delocalized (as they may occur in semiconductors), are relevant in several regards. Their de-excitation is extremely sensitive to the nature of the excitations of the systems, and a study of the de-excitation processes can yield a variety of information. For example, the excited states may represent the initial condition of the onset of such processes as Stokes-shifted emission, hot luminescence, symmetry-dependent Jahn-Teller and scattering processes, tunneling processes, energy transfer to like and unlike centers, superradiance, coherent radiation, and excited state absorption.

Download or read book Essentials of Modern Physics Applied to the Study of the Infrared written by Armand Hadni and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essentials of Modern Physics Applied to the Study of the Infrared covers topics about the essentials of modern physics. The book starts with the situation of research into the infrared and the problems to which it gives rise, and then discusses instrumentation in the infrared: optics, sources, receivers and electronics. The book describes the interaction between the infrared and matter within the framework of Lorentz's general theory and in the particular case of solids using Born's theory and introducing the notion of phonons. The region of the electromagnetic spectrum and the developments in science and industry, including X-ray analysis, molecular beam experiments, radio, and television are considered. The book tackles the sources of infrared as well as infrared detectors. The text will be useful to physicists, engineers, and laboratory technicians.
