Book Reliability and Validity of the self determination Student Scale with an Adjudicated Incarcerated Delinquent Population

Download or read book Reliability and Validity of the self determination Student Scale with an Adjudicated Incarcerated Delinquent Population written by Kalvin Holt and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of the "Self- Determination Student Scale" ("SDSS"), with an adjudicated and incarcerated delinquent youth population in state operated medium, closed and high secure juvenile delinquent treatment facilities. The research design was ex post facto, and the data was derived from secondary data obtained from a Bureau of Juvenile Justice transition planning study. The underlying data for this study consisted of scores on of scores on the "Self- Determination Student Survey" ("SDSS"), (N=268). The "SDSS" is a 92 item student response instruments that provides both an affective and cognitive domain. The primary scale yields scores pertaining to the construct of self-determination. Specifically, students are assessed on the following: the degree to which they possess self awareness, self-esteem, planning abilities, a willingness to take action, and insight into the consequences of their experiences. 60 The statistical analysis included a Cronbach Alpha to determine the reliability of the instrument and a Confirmatory Factor Analysis to validate the construct validity of the "SDSS." The findings substantiated the "SDSS" as a reliable measure for this sample of youth residents of juvenile justice residential treatment centers. Construct validity was not achieved, primarily as a result of non-independence among the latent variables. Several of the sub scales were found to have a high degree of correlation with the latent variables despite the model's shortcoming. This holds promise for future research efforts involving a revision of this instrument with adjudicated incarcerated delinquent youth in state training schools.

Book Improving Transition Domains by Examining Self determination Proficiency Among Gender and Race of Secondary Adolescents with Specific Learning Disabilities

Download or read book Improving Transition Domains by Examining Self determination Proficiency Among Gender and Race of Secondary Adolescents with Specific Learning Disabilities written by Barbara A. Garrett and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secondary adolescents with disabilities (AWD) have been mandated participants in their Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Individual Transition Plan (ITP) meetings since 1990, yet overprotective and well-meaning adults have assumed their advocacy role (Janiga & Costenbader, 2002). This has weakened their (secondary AWD) ability to become self-determined. Secondary AWD should be involved with the development, implementation and execution of services and supports in their IEP/ITP in order to benefit from their participation in general education as well as develop self-determination skills. To improve transition outcomes, this study examined self-determination and socio-cultural factors (race/ethnic and gender groups) among secondary adolescents with disabilities by differentiating baseline skills among race and gender groups. The two independent variables were race/ethnicity and gender. The dependent variables were the self-determination total score and each of four domain total scores (Autonomy, Self-Regulation, Psychological Empowerment, and Self-Realization) of the Arc's Self-Determination Scale. The literature revealed that there was not a standard for self-determination training programs for students with disabilities and teachers (Brunello-Prudencio, 2001). However, empirical data has emphasized that socio-cultural development (i.e. gender and race) could impact self-determination. Understanding the socio-cultural perspective of race/ethnicity and gender on self-determination has the potential to improve transition practices as well as highlight the importance for self-determination (Trainor, 2005). This study utilized information from the Arc's Self-Determination Scale (Wehmeyer & Kelchner, 1995) score of secondary adolescents with disabilities to determine whether differences existed among race/ethnic and gender groups. Research findings from this study indicated significant differences in total scores among race/ethnic groups for: (1) the autonomy domain (the ability to express personal preferences or beliefs); (2) self-determination; and (3) there was no significant difference for gender on either domain score or self-determination total scores. This research revealed that a self-determination assessment instrument could be used to isolate essential abilities and behaviors by gender and race for secondary adolescents with disabilities. To promote positive outcomes among deficit areas of self-determination for secondary adolescents with disabilities, this researcher recommended differentiated strategies for educational practitioners. Differentiated strategies could focus on collaborative learning communities, experiential learning options, and reduced emphasis on competitive learning environments.

Book Self determination Theory as a Model for Vocational Rehabilitation Engagement for Transition aged Young Adult Consumers

Download or read book Self determination Theory as a Model for Vocational Rehabilitation Engagement for Transition aged Young Adult Consumers written by Seneca E. Sharp and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive ability of a self-determination theory framework as an engagement model for transition-aged young adults (TAYA) with disabilities accessing public vocational rehabilitation services. Participants completed an online survey with demographic questions, self-determination constructs, and vocational rehabilitation (VR) engagement. Data analysis utilized correlations, multiple regression analysis, and mediator and moderator analyses. The findings of this study provided support for self-determination theory model in predicting positive engagement in VR. The hierarchical regression analysis accounted for 48% of the variance in VR engagement. Autonomy mediated the relationship between functional disability and VR engagement. Results of the study provide empirical evidence supporting the predictive validity of a self-determination model for transition-aged young adults' levels of engagement in state-federal VR services. Future research could validate the model based on other outcome measures relevant to TAYA postsecondary outcomes (e.g. work, levels of independent living, life satisfaction, quality of life) and investigate clinical interventions aimed at improving VR engagement based on the preliminary findings of the present study.

Book Increasing the Knowledge and Competencies Needed for Active Participation in Transition Planning

Download or read book Increasing the Knowledge and Competencies Needed for Active Participation in Transition Planning written by Angela Patti and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given their dismal postschool outcomes, students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) are in dire need of effective methods to increase their involvement in the transition process. It is believed that through this increased involvement, students with EBD may have greater opportunity to realize success in their postschool endeavors. This single-subject research study examined the effects of a self-determination program, the CD-ROM version of the Self-Advocacy Strategy, on the transition-related knowledge and skills of students with EBD. After strategy instruction, the students were able to better respond to transition-related probe questions and scored higher on a self-report measure of self-determination. Some students were also able to contribute more in mock transition planning meetings after strategy instruction as compared to before strategy instruction. Implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.

Book THEORY IN SELF DETERMINATION

Download or read book THEORY IN SELF DETERMINATION written by Michael L. Wehmeyer and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a comprehensive overview of three theoretical perspectives proposed during the past decade addressing the self-determination construct as it applies to the field of special education. The three models were selected primarily because they have focused on defining and categorizing self-determination for all students with disabilities, including students with mental retardation and other cognitive disabilities. These models are intended to provide students and practitioners a solid grounding in self-determination theory. All models have been evaluated among students with cognitive disabilities but are applicable to all students with or without disabilities. The authors research each model and have applied their own theoretical framework to special education, ensuring that interventions to promote skills like problem solving, goal setting, decision making, and self-advocacy are in place for all students. By reading this text, the reader will gain a solid, theoretically based foundation in understanding the self-determination construct which ultimately supports the development of instructional interventions that enable students with disabilities to become self-determined. It will be useful as a text in upper undergraduate and graduate courses in special education, psychology, social work/welfare, general education, vocational rehabilitation and disability studies.
