Book excerpt: Our nation faces an exponentially high demand for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) professionals and a scarce supply of individuals who pursue STEM careers, especially multilingual individuals. Particularly among students who are non-native English speakers (i.e., students whose native language is not English), there is little information on what role math attitudes and math self-efficacy play in understanding STEM outcomes. This information is critical to inform educators and policymakers on how to better prepare students and provide them the proper skills to be college and career-ready in STEM careers. To address this need, this dissertation explores the relationship between native and non-native English speakers' math attitudes and math self-efficacy with their 12th grade math achievement, STEM bachelor degree attainment, and STEM career attainment. More specifically, this study examines students' STEM outcomes at three levels of educational attainment including the graduation of high school, community college, and university.

Book excerpt: Elementary students' self-efficacy and attitudes towards mathematics can be challenging to measure. Bandura (1997) describes perceived self-efficacy as "not a measure of the skills one has but a belief about what one can do under different sets of conditions with whatever skills one possesses" (p. 37). Attitudes in the educational setting represent a desired outcome relative to a specific target (McCoach, Gable, & Madura, 2013). Efficacy and attitudes continue to influence educational attainments (Bandura, 1997). This sequential mixed-methods study explored grade 5 students' mathematical self-efficacy and enjoyment, after implementing a 10-week journal writing treatment. The research questions were: 1. Is there a difference between students exposed to journal writing and not exposed, after controlling for initial differences on the pre-test, with respect to: mathematical self-efficacy and enjoyment? 2. Is there a difference between male and female students, after controlling for initial differences on the pre-test, with respect to: mathematical self-efficacy and enjoyment? 3. Is there an interaction between gender and treatment group, after controlling for initial differences on the pre-test, with respect to: mathematical self-efficacy and enjoyment? 4. How do grade 5 students in the treatment group respond to journal writing prompts regarding affective/attitudinal and dispositions in the content of mathematics? 5. In what ways are gender perspectives revealed through the journal writing responses? The instrument was administered to grade 5 participants in the journal writing treatment group (N=79) at one elementary school and the comparison group (N=51) from a comparable elementary school in the same district who were not exposed to the treatment. Book excerpt: In this study, the investigator sought to determine the extent to which mathematics self-efficacy affects mathematics growth among students in grades four and five. Included in this investigation is a hypothesized structural model that reflects Bandura's (1977a, 1986, 1989) theory of self-efficacy. In part one of the investigation, each variable in the model (mathematics self-efficacy, self-regulation in mathematics, mathematics avoidance, mathematics anxiety, attitude toward mathematics, and mathematics growth) was analyzed to determine whether there were significant differences between genders in those specified variables. Findings revealed gender differences in two of the six variables, self-regulation in mathematics and mathematics avoidance. Females reported more self-regulatory behaviors in mathematics and less mathematics avoidance behaviors. In part two of the study, the investigator examined the measurement and structural model. In addition, the direct and indirect effects of mathematics self-efficacy on mathematics growth were analyzed. Results from this investigation showed no significant direct effect of mathematics self-efficacy on mathematics growth. However, there was a significant indirect effect of mathematics self-efficacy on mathematics growth with the following mediating variables: self-regulation in mathematics, mathematics avoidance, mathematics anxiety, and attitude toward mathematics. The indirect effect of mathematics self-efficacy on mathematics growth was small, and 5% of the variance in mathematics growth could be explained by the predictor variables. Though some of the data supported Bandura's (1977a, 1986, 1989) theory of self-efficacy, most of the findings do not support the theoretical framework. The findings from this investigation provide helpful information to the educators at the study's site. Further intervention studies in the areas of mathematics self-efficacy, self-regulation in mathematics, mathematics avoidance, mathematics anxiety, and attitude toward mathematics are recommended. Another recommendation for the study's site is to continue to strengthen the social and emotional learning environment with lessons centered on the growth mindset or through evidence-based programs.

Book excerpt: Mathematics self-efficacy has been shown to be a strong predictor of mathematics performance and mixed results have been found when examining the mathematics self-efficacy of face-to-face students based on gender and age. However, there is a lack of research studies that examine if differences exist in the mathematics self-efficacy of face-to-face and online students. The purpose of this ex-post facto causal comparative quantitative study was to determine if differences existed in the mathematics self-efficacy of Quantitative Literacy students, as measured by the Mathematics Self-Efficacy Scale, based on their choice of delivery method (face-to-face or online). Participants for this research study were comprised of select face-to-face and online Quantitative Literacy students at seven North Carolina community colleges. Data were examined using a one-way multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA) and a statistically significant difference was found in the mathematics task self-efficacy and math-related school subjects’ self-efficacy of students who enrolled in a face-to-face or online Quantitative Literacy course. Online Quantitative Literacy students possessed both a higher mathematics task self-efficacy and math-related school subjects’ self-efficacy. Additional data analyses revealed no statistically significant differences in the mathematics self-efficacy of Quantitative Literacy students based on gender and method of placement (high school multiple measures, placement test scores, and developmental mathematics course completion).
