Book Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Download or read book Complementary and Alternative Medicine written by Caragh Brosnan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) – as knowledge, philosophy and practice – is constituted by, and transformed through, broader social developments. Shifting the sociological focus away from CAM as a stable entity that elicits perceptions and experiences, chapters explore the forms that CAM takes in different settings, how global social transformations elicit varieties of CAM, and how CAM philosophies and practices are co-produced in the context of social change. Through engagement with frameworks from Science and Technology Studies (STS), CAM is reconceptualised as a set of practices and knowledge-making processes, and opened up to new forms of analysis. Part 1 of the book explores how and why boundaries within CAM and between CAM and other health practices, are being constructed, challenged and changed. Part 2 asks how CAM as material practice is shaped by politics and regulation in a range of national settings. Part 3 examines how evidence is being produced and used in CAM research and practice. Including studies of CAM in Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, and North and South America, the volume will appeal to postgraduate students, researchers and health practitioners.

Download or read book More Than Just Medicine written by Paolo Jose De Luna and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the many years of research and study that have been invested towards healthcare, there are still things that escape from our knowledge and still remain to be unanswered, leaving us only with mysteries that even now are left unsolved. With hundreds and thousands of medications, various surgical procedures, and countless laboratory tests and diagnostic exams, it's safe to say that the healthcare practice has certainly evolved from the years of just boring holes into people's heads. The sophistication of healthcare isn't just about bringing new and profound ways in curing diseases and improving lives. It's also meant to establish the strong foundation of knowledge that will be later passed on to future generations which would then be continually improved upon the years of research and study. But healthcare isn't just about using science and staying in that domain forever. There are also other ways to improve the quality of life and even serve as therapeutic solutions to a number of health problems that people experience. No longer relying on medications or surgical procedures that have been tried and tested for so many years, alternative medicine has opened up new ways and possibilities when it comes to improving the health of the people. Alternative medicine has been gathering attention over the years. While modern medicine has brought us a number of drugs that can be taken to relieve us of the signs and symptoms of various health problems, there are also a number of side effects and adverse reactions that can occur. After all, medications are developed from chemicals that are considered as foreign by the body. What alternative medicine gives us is the option to pursue and utilize natural methods in achieving better health and promoting wellness away from the usual medications and surgical procedures that we are often presented with. Free from the products of artificialism, alternative medicine brings us the option of using natural and organic methods for the promotion of our health. Today, alternative medicine has a unique stance in the healthcare industry as it lies between the narrow line of being beneficial and being hoaxes. A lot of people are still quite skeptical when it comes to alternative medicine and no one can blame them since there are a lot of frauds and scams that claim to be the newest and the most effective trend in alternative medicine. Due to the influence of the media, these false alternative medicine practices are often promoted while the most basic and most effective practices are clouded with doubt and skepticism. With that said, the different alternative medicine practices in this book are proven with years of study and research to establish the truth and scientific basis towards the number of benefits that each one has. In this book, we'll be discussing more on alternative medicine, its history, its application, and the benefits that alternative medicine can bring. With the broad practice of alternative medicine, there are certainly a lot to be discussed and each one has their own benefits when it comes to our health. Grab a pen and a piece of paper and be sure to take notes along the way to learn more about alternative medicine and you might even see one that you might just be interested in.

Book SCAM

  • Author : Edzard Ernst
  • Publisher : Andrews UK Limited
  • Release : 2018-06-22
  • ISBN : 1845409833
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book SCAM written by Edzard Ernst and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2018-06-22 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So-called alternative medicine (SCAM) is popular and therefore important, no matter whether we love or loathe it. Consequently, an impressive number of books about SCAM are already available. Most of them, however, are woefully uncritical, overtly promotional and dangerously misleading. Not so this one! This book was written by someone who received SCAM as a patient, practised SCAM as a doctor, and researched SCAM as a scientist. It provides an insider's perspective by covering aspects of SCAM which most other books avoid, and by questioning the many tacitly accepted assumptions and wild extrapolations that underpin SCAM. The text is factual, occasionally dosed with a touch of humour or satire. The aim is not only to inform but also to entertain. It is written principally for members of the general public who have an interest in healthcare and are tired of the promotional counter-knowledge produced by SCAM enthusiasts. It is an exercise in critical thinking that might prevent you from wasting your money on (or endangering your health with) bogus treatments.

Book Bounding Biomedicine

Download or read book Bounding Biomedicine written by Colleen Derkatch and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-04-21 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1990s, unprecedented numbers of Americans turned to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), an umbrella term encompassing health practices such as chiropractic, energy healing, herbal medicine, homeopathy, meditation, naturopathy, and traditional Chinese medicine. By 1997, nearly half the US population was seeking CAM in one form or another, spending at least $27 billion out-of-pocket annually on related products and services. As CAM rose in popularity over the decade, so did mainstream medicine's interest in understanding whether those practices actually worked, and how. Medical researchers devoted considerable effort to testing CAM interventions in clinical trials, and medical educators scrambled to assist physicians in advising patients about CAM. In Bounding Biomedicine, Colleen Derkatch examines how the rhetorical discourse around the published research on this issue allowed the medical profession to maintain its position of privilege and prestige throughout this process, even as its place at the top of the healthcare hierarchy appeared to be weakening. Her research focuses on the ground-breaking and somewhat controversial CAM-themed issues of The Journal of the American Medical Association and its nine specialized Archives journals from 1998, demonstrating how these texts performed rhetorical boundary work for the medical profession. As Derkatch reveals, the question of how to test healthcare practices that don't fit easily (or at all) within mainstream Western medical frameworks sweeps us into the realm of medical knowledge-making--the research teams, clinical trials, and medical journals that determine which treatments are safe and effective--and also out into the world where doctors meet patients, illnesses find treatment, and values, practices, policies, and priorities intersect. Through Bounding Biomedicine, Derkatch shows exactly how narratives of medicine's entanglements with competing models of healthcare shape not only the historical episodes they narrate but also the very fabric of medical knowledge itself and how the medical profession is made and remade through its own discursive activity.

Book Biomedicine and Alternative Healing Systems in America

Download or read book Biomedicine and Alternative Healing Systems in America written by Hans A. Baer and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining medical pluralism in the United States from the Revolutionary War period through the end of the twentieth century, Hans Baer brings together in one convenient reference a vast array of information on healing systems as diverse as Christian Science, osteopathy, acupuncture, Santeria, southern Appalachian herbalism, evangelical faith healing, and Navajo healing. In a country where the dominant paradigm of biomedicine (medical schools, research hospitals, clinics staffed by M.D.s and R.N.s) has been long established and supported by laws and regulations, the continuing appeal of other medical systems and subsystems bears careful consideration. Distinctions of class, Baer emphasizes, as well as differences in race, ethnicity, and gender, are fundamental to the diversity of beliefs, techniques, and social organizations represented in the phenomenon of medical pluralism. Baer traces the simultaneous emergence in the nineteenth century of formalized biomedicine and of homeopathy, botanic medicine, hydropathy, Christian Science, osteopathy, and chiropractic. He examines present-day osteopathic medicine as a system parallel to biomedicine with an emphasis on primary care; chiropractic, naturopathy, and acupuncture as professionalized heterodox medical systems; homeopathy, herbalism, bodywork, and lay midwifery in the context of the holistic health movement; Anglo-American religious healing; and folk medical systems, particularly among racial and ethnic minorities. In closing he focuses on the persistence of folk medical systems among working-class Americans and considers the growing interest of biomedical physicians, pharmaceutical and healthcare corporations, and government in the holistic health movement

Book Baptizing Alternative Medicine

Download or read book Baptizing Alternative Medicine written by W. Westbrook and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-01-22 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are alternative medicine and Christianity natural allies or rivals? They share a surprising number of basic features, yet it is frequently assumed that they are automatically in conflict. Many thoughtful Christians are intrigued by alternative medicine but wonder if there are sound theological reasons to avoid it. Does one risk Hell by receiving acupuncture for tennis elbow? Baptizing Alternative Medicine addresses these concerns. It examines alternative medicine while avoiding the polarized positions which have frequently marked the debate. When one evaluates complementary and alternative therapies with careful attention to both spirituality and science, it becomes clear that though there are real dangers in some therapies, there are also real benefits which are worth pursuing. The book covers the major alternative therapies, analyzing the available scientific evidence and any theological concerns.
