Book Examining Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas s Senate Debates

Download or read book Examining Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas s Senate Debates written by Alex David and published by Enslow Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we think of candidates debating before being elected. It is a normal part of the election process. However, before Abraham Lincoln and Illinois senator Stephen Douglas, debates did not occur. Their debates were later published in a book, and Americans could read each candidate's thoughts on slavery. Lincoln wanted to end slavery but Douglas wanted each state to decide for itself if slavery should exist. The ensuing debates pinpoint a critical time in American history. Were people going to vote to allow this inhumane institution to continue or would they agree with Lincoln and abolish it?

Download or read book The Lincoln Douglas Debates and the Making of a President written by Timothy S. Good and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lincoln-Douglas senatorial debates of 1858 marked a significant crossroads in the political career of Abraham Lincoln. Though he lost the Unites States senate seat for Illinois to Stephen A. Douglas, the debates launched Lincoln into political prominence and eventually contributed to his successful run for the presidency. This work reveals Lincoln's political evolution during the debates through a narrative approach, evaluating his debate strategy and seemingly inconsistent views on slavery and racial inequality. Organized chronologically, the book examines each of the seven debates individually, acknowledging Lincoln's disappointing turns at Jonesboro and Charleston but celebrating his powerful comeback at Alton in the final senatorial debate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nominated in 1858 by the infant Republican party to oppose Stephen A. Douglas, Abraham Lincoln challenged the incumbent Democratic senator from Illinois to a series of debates. This volume contains their masterful arguments as well as two speeches, one by each candidate. Paving the way for modern debates between political candidates, the Lincoln-Douglas debates were more than formal discussions between opponents. Lincoln lost the election; but the speeches brought him to national attention and helped propel him to the Presidency in 1860.

This book was released on 1991-05-28 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lincoln-Douglas debates remain our culture's model of what public political debate ought to be. This new edition of the complete transcripts of the debates and eyewitness interpretations of them (previously published under the title Created Equal?) includes a new Foreword by David Zarefsky. Zarefsky analyzes the rhetoric of the speeches, showing how Lincoln and Douglas chose their arguments and initiated a debate that shook the nation. Their eloquent, statesmanlike discussion of the morality of slavery illustrates the masterful use of rhetorical strategies and tactics in the public forum: a form of discourse that has nearly disappeared from the political scene today.

Book The Lincoln Douglas Debates

Download or read book The Lincoln Douglas Debates written by Harold Holzer and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative edition of the Lincoln-Douglas debates from a leading Lincoln historian brings to life the passions that divided nineteenth-century America. The seven debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas held during the Illinois senatorial race of 1858 include some of the most important statements in American political history. Taken together, they embody the nation’s dramatic struggles over the issues that would lead to the Civil War: the virtues of a republic and the evils of slavery. So contentious were these debates that two newspapers attempted to record and publish the proceedings verbatim. In this acclaimed book, Lincoln historian Harold Holzer brings us as close as possible to what Lincoln and Douglas actually said. Using transcripts of Lincoln’s speeches as recorded by the pro-Douglas newspaper, and vice-versa, he offers the most reliable and accurate record of the debates available. Also included are background on the sites, crowd comments, and a new introduction. “A vivid, boisterous picture of politics during our most divisive period. . . . This fresh, fascinating examination . . . deserves a place in all American history collection[s].”—Library Journal

Book Debates of Lincoln Douglas

Download or read book Debates of Lincoln Douglas written by and published by Digital Scanning Inc. This book was released on 1998-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These debates are perhaps the most consequential artifact of American election campaigning and its political arguments. The political debates took place between the Honorable Abraham Lincoln and the Honorable Stephen A. Douglas in the celebrated campaign for a United States Senate seat in 1858, in Illinois. The debates were carefully recorded by the reporters of each party at the times of their delivery and originally published in 1860 by Follett & Foster. The debates were held at seven sites throughout Illinois, one in each of the Congressional Districts. Also included are the preceding speeches of each candidate at Chicago, Springfield, etc., as well as the two great speeches of Lincoln in Ohio, in 1859. Douglas, a Democrat, was the incumbent senator, having been elected in 1847. He had chaired the Senate Committee on Territories. He helped enact the Compromise of 1850. Douglas then was a proponent of Popular Sovereignty, and was responsible for the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. The legislation led to the violence in Kansas, hence the name "Bleeding Kansas." Lincoln was a relative unknown at the beginning of the debates. In contrast to Douglas' Popular Sovereignty stance, Lincoln stated that the United States could not survive as half-slave and half-free states. The Lincoln-Douglas Debates drew the attention of the entire nation. Although Lincoln would lose the Senate race in 1858, he would beat out Douglas in the 1860 race for the United States Presidency.
