Book excerpt: When George’s wife died, ForeverConnected promised him they could make her live on forever in a custom smart home system created from her digital footprint. And they delivered. George hates to admit it, but in some ways, it’s an improvement. Let’s face it, the real Hannah was a bit of a screwup. Now she always pays attention when he talks. She never forgets to warm up his slippers in the morning. She cooks his eggs just right every time. Those strange things she says from time to time? Just glitches. Otherwise it would mean the real Hannah was keeping secrets from him, and he knows that can’t be true. She was too good a wife for that. And now she’s even better. This short story is 11,000 words long. It is also available in Digital Soul, a science fiction short story collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chastity Newberry had more than enough on her plate with recovering from a ski accident. Just when she thought her life was finally improving, she received the news from hell. She’d been chosen as the winner in the Annual Dancing Beneath the Stars contest at her new job. No way was she going to go, especially since she'd have to dance with Cameron Barron. Cameron Barron was ticked off to begin with. Relocating to Detroit wasn't something he'd ever planned on doing, but here he was, cleaning up someone else’s mess. He didn’t think his life could possibly get any worse, until his evil secretary opened her mouth and ruined what was left of his sanity. What was she thinking, trying to rope him into a ridiculous dance contest where he, as acting CEO, would be the prize? Who the hell comes up with this crap? Someone else could stand in for him, or the annual event was going to be short the CEO. But fate, along with his meddling secretary, had different plans. Bad plans. As far as Cameron was concerned, it shouldn’t have been such a big surprise when things blew up in their faces. Now, he was being blackmailed into fixing it all. In order to meet the crazy demands of his secretary, he’d have to apologize to Chastity. However, she wouldn’t let him get near her. No problem. Cameron was used to a good challenge. He’d just create a disguise to solve this dilemma. Presto! The new persona could apologize on his behalf, then he could get the hell out of Detroit. Cameron’s plan was rock solid. Brilliant even! …Until that fateful day. One slip of the tongue was all it took.

Book Family Stories and the Life Course

Download or read book Family Stories and the Life Course written by Michael W. Pratt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-04-26 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book draws from work that focuses on the act of telling family stories, as well as their content and structure. The process of telling family stories is linked to central aspects of development, including language acquisition, affect regulation, and family interaction patterns. This book extends across traditional developmental psychology, personality theory, and family studies. Drawing broadly on the epigenetic framework for individual development articulated by Erik Erikson, as well as on conceptions of the family life cycle, the editors bring together contemporary examples of psychological research on family stories and their implications for development and change at different points in the life course. The book is divided into sections that focus on family stories at different points in the life cycle, from early childhood and the beginnings of narrative skill, through adolescence, young adulthood, midlife, and then mature adulthood and its intergenerational meaning. During each of these periods of the life cycle, research focusing on individual development within an Eriksonian framework of ego strengths and virtues is highlighted. The dynamic role of family stories is also featured here, with work exploring the links between family process, intergenerational attachment, and storytelling. Sociocultural theories that emphasize how such development is situated in the wider cultural context are also featured in several chapters. This broad lifespan developmental focus serves to integrate the exciting diversity of this work and foster further questions and research in the emerging field of family narrative. The book is intended primarily for researchers and advanced-level students in the fields of developmental and personality psychology, as well as those in family studies and in gerontology. It may also be of interest to those in the helping professions who are concerned with family therapy and family issues, and may--due to its content and illustrative material--have appeal to a wider market of the lay public. The chapters are written in a readily accessible style and the analyses are presented in a fairly non-technical way. Because family stories are charted across the lifespan, it would be a suitable companion book to a more traditional lifespan textbook in certain courses.

Book Bereavement Narratives

Download or read book Bereavement Narratives written by Christine Valentine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-07-08 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bereavement is often treated as a psychological condition of the individual with both healthy and pathological forms. However, this empirically-grounded study argues that this is not always the best or only way to help the bereaved. In a radical departure, it emphasises normality and social and cultural diversity in grieving. Exploring the significance of the dying person’s final moments for those who are left behind, this book sheds new light on the variety of ways in which bereaved people maintain their relationship with dead loved ones and how the dead retain a significant social presence in the lives of the living. It draws practical conclusions for professionals in relation to the complex and social nature of grief and the value placed on the right to grieve in one’s own way – supporting and encouraging the bereaved person to articulate their own experience and find their own methods of coping. Based on new empirical research, Bereavement Narratives is an innovative and invaluable read for all students and researchers of death, dying and bereavement.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER Soon to be a major motion picture "Jon Swift + Witches of Eastwick + Kelly 'Get In Trouble' Link + Mean Girls + Creative Writing Degree Hell! No punches pulled, no hilarities dodged, no meme unmangled! O Bunny you are sooo genius!" —Margaret Atwood, via Twitter "A wild, audacious and ultimately unforgettable novel." —Michael Schaub, Los Angeles Times "Awad is a stone-cold genius." —Ann Bauer, The Washington Post The Vegetarian meets Heathers in this darkly funny, seductively strange novel from the acclaimed author of 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl and Rouge "We were just these innocent girls in the night trying to make something beautiful. We nearly died. We very nearly did, didn't we?" Samantha Heather Mackey couldn't be more of an outsider in her small, highly selective MFA program at New England's Warren University. A scholarship student who prefers the company of her dark imagination to that of most people, she is utterly repelled by the rest of her fiction writing cohort--a clique of unbearably twee rich girls who call each other "Bunny," and seem to move and speak as one. But everything changes when Samantha receives an invitation to the Bunnies' fabled "Smut Salon," and finds herself inexplicably drawn to their front door--ditching her only friend, Ava, in the process. As Samantha plunges deeper and deeper into the Bunnies' sinister yet saccharine world, beginning to take part in the ritualistic off-campus "Workshop" where they conjure their monstrous creations, the edges of reality begin to blur. Soon, her friendships with Ava and the Bunnies will be brought into deadly collision. The spellbinding new novel from one of our most fearless chroniclers of the female experience, Bunny is a down-the-rabbit-hole tale of loneliness and belonging, friendship and desire, and the fantastic and terrible power of the imagination.
