During all these years, Hebrew literature has shared the fortunes Of the Jewish people, it has been swayed by the same influences, and subject to the same varying atmospheric pressure. For two reasons the line Of demarcation between the different periods of this literature stands out very clearly against the light of history, perhaps more than in any other litera ture. In the first place, as the Jewish spirit has always been collective rather than individualistic, the movement of Hebrew literature has generally been, SO to speak, en masse; and it is always easier to define the limits Of a collective movement than to trace individual tastes and influences. Secondly, the various periods Of Hebrew literature, at least up to the nineteenth century, were as a Whole co-extensive with the periods of Jewish history as connected with this or that particular country. It is enough to recall to mind the history Of the Jews in Spain, for example, and the so-called Spanish period of Hebrew literature immediately stands before the mind's eye, clear-cut, well-rounded, and well-defined. Modern Hebrew literature emerged during the nineteenth century as part of the Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment) movement, which attempted to break from the traditional modes of Jewish intellectual and social life. The Hebrew literature that arose in this period embraced the rebellious nature of the Haskalah and is commonly characterized as secular in nature, defying Orthodoxy and rejecting God. Nevertheless, this volume shows that modern Hebrew literature relied on traditional narratological and poetic norms in its attempt to represent God. Despite its self-declared secularity, it engaged deeply with traditional problems such as the nature of God, divine presence, and theodicy. Book excerpt: The emergence of Modern Hebrew as a spoken language constitutes a unique event in modern history: a language which for generations only existed in the written mode underwent a process popularly called “revival”, acquiring native speakers and becoming a language spoken for everyday use. Despite the attention it has drawn, this particular case of language-shift, which differs from the better-documented cases of creoles and mixed languages, has not been discussed within the framework of the literature on contact-induced change. The linguistic properties of the process have not been systematically studied, and the status of the emergent language as a (dis)continuous stage of its historical sources has not been evaluated in the context of other known cases of language shift. The present collection presents detailed case studies of the syntactic evolution of Modern Hebrew, alongside general theoretical discussion, with the aim of bringing the case of Hebrew to the attention of language-contact scholars, while bringing the insights of the literature on language contact to help shed light on the case of Hebrew.
