Excerpt: ...understand just what part each one of the various developmental factors or causes plays, there is necessary a most thorough analytical study of development, and an attempt o determine in measurable or quantitative degree just what specific effects each factor produces. Obviously the most reliable way to effect this analysis and this determination of the specific cause and effect relations is to appeal to experiment. But biology has always been looked on as, and until recently has actually been, almost wholly a science of observation. It is now becoming, in part at least, a science of experiment as chemistry and physics have long been (these are now becoming more and more sciences of calculation, that is, exact sciences like mathematics), and this change and advance--for it is truly an advance when a science formerly relying for its facts on observation begins to base its foundations on the results of experiment--is due primarily to the modern interest and work in the problem of developmental causes. The search for a rational, causomechanical explanation of the complex and at first sight wholly baffling phenomena of development has been a great stimulus to the bold questioning of many other vital phenomena heretofore looked on as to be explained only by the assumption of a mystic vital force or capacity wholly beyond and foreign to the physicochemical world of matter and force. Mechanism versus vitalism is one of the greatest present-day battles in biology, and nowhere is the struggle keener or are the mechanists more bold in their position than in the particular field of the processes and factors of development. In a series of twenty chapters, Mr. Mayr presents a consecutive story, beginning with a description of evolutionary biology and ending with a discussion of man as a biological species. Calling attention to unsolved problems, and relating the evolutionary subject matter to appropriate material from other fields, such as physiology, genetics, and biochemistry, the author integrates and interprets existing data. Believing that an unequivocal stand is more likely to produce constructive criticism than evasion of an issue, he does not hesitate to choose that interpretation of a controversial matter which to him seems most consistent with the emerging picture of the evolutionary process. Between the terminal points mentioned above, Mr. Mayr pursues the narrative through discussions of species concepts and their application, morphological species characters and sibling species, biological properties of species, isolating mechanisms, hybridization, the variation and genetics of populations, storage and protection of genetic variation, the unity of the genotype, geographic variation, the polytypic species of the taxonomist, the population structure of species, kinds of species, multiplication of species, geographic speciation, the genetics of speciation, the ecology of speciation, and species and transpecific evolution. Animal Species and Evolution is presented as a permanent entity. In accordance with the author's feeling that the acquisition of new knowledge will require a new statement, rather than an emendation of a previous one, no substantive revisions of this volume are planned for future printings. Because of the impossibility of experimenting with man, and because an understanding of man's biology is indispensable for safeguarding his future, emphasis throughout this book is placed on those findings from the higher animals which are directly applicable to man. In his final chapter on hominids and the various forms of Homo, Mr. Mayr comes to the conclusion that, while modem man appears to be just as well adapted for survival purposes as were his ancestors, there is much evidence to suggest that he is threatened by the loss of his most typically human characteristics. It would be within his power to reverse this tendency.

This "vertical" dimension of evolution has been downplayed in both the specialist and popular literature on evolution, in large part because it was in the past associated with unsavory political views. The avoidance of evolution's vertical dimension has, however, left evolutionary biology open to the perception, from outside, that it deals merely with the diversification of rather similar creatures, all at the same level of "advancedness" from a common ancestor—for example, the classic case studies of finches with different beaks or moths of different colors. The latest incarnation of creationism, dubbed intelligent design (or ID), has taken advantage of this situation. It portrays an evolutionary process that is constantly guided—especially in its upward direction—by the hand of an unseen Creator, who is able to ensure that it ends up producing humans. Creatures of Accident attacks the antiscience ID worldview, mainly by building a persuasive picture of how "unaided" evolution produces advanced creatures from simple ones by an essentially accidental process. Having built this picture, in the final chapter the book reflects on its religious implications.
