Download or read book God After Darwin written by John F. Haught and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In God After Darwin, eminent theologian John F. Haught argues that the ongoing debate between Darwinian evolutionists and Christian apologists is fundamentally misdirected: Both sides persist in focusing on an explanation of underlying design and order in the universe. Haught suggests that what is lacking in both of these competing ideologies is the notion of novelty, a necessary component of evolution and the essence of the unfolding of the divine mystery. He argues that Darwin's disturbing picture of life, instead of being hostile to religion-as scientific skeptics and many believers have thought it to be-actually provides a most fertile setting for mature reflection on the idea of God. Solidly grounded in scholarship, Haught's explanation of the relationship between theology and evolution is both accessible and engaging. The second edition of God After Darwin features an entirely new chapter on the ongoing, controversial debate between intelligent design and evolution, including an assessment of Haught's experience as an expert witness in the landmark case of Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District on teaching evolution and intelligent design in schools.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Immanent God: An Essay on the Natural Theology of Evolution Dr. Bushnell observes, in his work entitled "Nature and the Supernatural," that - "from the first moment or birthtime of modern science, if we could fix the moment, it has been clear that Christianity must ultimately come into a grand issue of life and death with it, or with the tendencies embodied in its progress. Not that Christianity has any conflict with the facts of Science, or they with it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Evolution, Games, and God explores how cooperation and altruism, alongside mutation and natural selection, play a critical role in evolution, from microbes to human societies. Inheriting a tendency to cooperate and self-sacrifice on behalf of others may be as beneficial to a population’s survival as the self-preserving instincts of individuals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should we attempt to understand (macro-)evolutionary biology, in the twenty-first century, as secular or sacred? This book will attempt to answer this question by exploring the secular evolutionary worldview, the author's view of kenotic-causation, Whitehead's views on chance, Derrida's views on non-human animals, a statement upon the God of chance and purpose, Augustine's various theologies of creation, a decidedly non-dualistic (macro-)evolution, a provocative thesis regarding evolutionary Christology, the connection between kenosis and emergence, and an explication of both Anders Nygren and Thomas Jay Oord's views of love in the contemporary environ. It also develops the author's personal view regarding necessary, kenotically-donated, and self-giving love, and argues that kenosis and emergence can add to the discussion of understanding the theology-science-love symbiosis. It advocates and explicates herein a monistic process-based view of the overlapping relationship between theology and science.

Download or read book Evolutionary History in Theological Perspective written by Mario Anthony Russo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-06-10 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutionary History in Theological Perspective: Exploring the Scientific Story of the Cosmos develops a new theological interpretation of evolutionary history. Exploring both secular and theological interpretations of evolutionary history, this new interpretation hinges on the similarities between individual redemption and the eschatological story of cosmic redemption as mediated by the Holy Spirit throughout evolutionary history. This new lens is then applied to relevant questions raised by the evolutionary process (especially suffering), and helps overcome the current shortcomings of contemporary interpretations of evolutionary history.

Download or read book Maximus the Confessor and Evolutionary Biology written by Andrew P. Jackson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-04 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings Maximus the Confessor’s logoi doctrine into dialogue with modern-day evolutionary biology. It explores the extent to which the logoi, as described by Maximus, exhibit features that are concordant with evolution before going on to consider more discordant aspects that cannot be ignored. The author addresses the curious resonance between the logoi and evolution in a systematic way through a close reading of primary textual material allied with a deep understanding of both the classical Darwinian and ‘extended’ evolutionary syntheses. The study joins with other Maximian interpreters in attesting to the incarnational and theophanic nature of the logoi, but seeks to extend this distinctively Eastern Christo-cosmology into the problematic territory of biological evolution, a territory historically dominated by Western scholarship. The book will be of interest to scholars of religion and science, as well as Patristics and the Eastern Orthodox theological traditions.

Download or read book The Creative Suffering of the Triune God written by Gloria L. Schaab and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-10-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global reality of suffering and death has always demanded an authentic theological response and impelled debate concerning Gods relationship to suffering, as well as the conceivability of the suffering of God. The scope and impact of this suffering in the last century have driven this debate to an acute pitch, demanding to know how one can speak rightly of God in view of the suffering that is inherent and inflicted in the cosmos. While in former ages, some looked to an omnipotent and impassible deus ex machina in answer to this question, many contemporary theologians have revised their understanding of God in relation to the world. With these theologians, Gloria Schaab proposes that a viable response to cosmic suffering is the recognition that the triune Christian God participates in the very sufferings of the cosmos itself. She sets her argument within theology and science dialogue and specifically within the work of scientist-theologian Arthur Peacocke. Informed by the understandings of evolutionary science, grounded within a panentheistic paradigm of the God-world relationship, and rooted within the Christian theological tradition, this work contends that the understanding of the Triune God as intimately involved with the suffering of the cosmos is viable and efficacious in view of the suffering of the cosmos and its creatures. It develops a female procreative model of the creative suffering of the Triune God, an ecological ethics based on the midwife model of care, and a pastoral model of threefold differentiation of suffering in God as steps toward Christian praxis in response to the mystery of God within the pain, suffering, and death of cosmic existence and human experience.
