Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dillon and Wink bring their combination of sociological and psychological perspectives to this landmark study, making possible a fascinating series of individual portraits—and a fresh new window on how life and faith have changed over the last century."—Nancy T. Ammerman, author of Pillars of Faith: American Congregations and their Partners, Building Traditions, Building Communities "The rich findings in this landmark volume challenge many assumptions about religion and the life course while documenting the multiple ways, both direct and subtle, that faith relates to personality, social attitudes, community involvement, psychological well-being, and health. This is social science at its best - empirically rigorous and theoretically sophisticated for sure, but also deeply humane in its ability to convey so clearly the individual voices of the research participants, as they struggle to make sense of their lives in a rapidly changing world."—Dan P. Book Kierkegaard s Influence on Philosophy

Download or read book Kierkegaard s Influence on Philosophy written by Jon Bartley Stewart and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tome III traces Kierkegaard's influence on Anglophone philosophy. It has long been thought that Kierkegaard played no role in this tradition, which for years was dominated by analytic philosophy. In this environment it was common to dismiss Kierkegaard along with the then current European philosophers who were influenced by him. However, a closer look reveals that in fact there were several thinkers in the US, Canada and Great Britain who were inspired by Kierkegaard even during the heyday of analytic philosophy. Current thinking now suggests that Kierkegaard has made some serious inroads into mainstream Anglophone philosophy, with many authors seeking inspiration in his works for current discussions concerning ethics, personal identity, philosophy of religion, and philosophical anthropology.

Book Going Down Under

Download or read book Going Down Under written by Gregory Charles and published by YEHKRI.COM A.C.C.. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Going Down Under is the transcript of a 10-Day Residential Sex & Relationship seminar that was delivered in Australia by Gregory Charles, The Aussie Relationship Guru. Is for anyone who is seeking deeper meaning and answers to a wide range of issues around the core topics of sex and relationships. So far it has been read by couples (who state it helped save their marriage), college students and other singles and couples from age 19 to 60 and has been greatly valued. The book is a necessary response to a dearth of meaningful information in a plethora of superficial, time-worn, moralistic answers to the issues of sex and relationships and their place in our lives. Especially in America, Gregory’s direct and honest Aussie approach has been welcomed as an antidote to the politically correct, judgmental puritanism that permeates this culture. Starting with the name, the content brings a wry sense of humor to matters that are usually treated as being heavy and serious.

Book The Connected Lives of Dutch Punks

Download or read book The Connected Lives of Dutch Punks written by Kirsty Lohman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in-depth, ethnographic study of the Dutch punk scene. It questions the artificial boundaries of subcultural research, calling for a critical analysis of the distinctions drawn between subcultural and everyday lives, and between localised and globalised subcultures. The everyday experiences of punk are framed within the mobile and connected global subculture of which they are a part. It traces its emergence in the 1970s and its development through to 2010, with chapters that map Dutch punk historically and spatially. Further chapters explore the meanings and practices attached to punk by its participants before focusing in particular on the political affiliations of punks. This book argues for an approach to social research that recognises the ‘messiness’ and the ‘connectedness’ of punk and of the social world.

Book Volume 11 Tome III Kierkegaard s Influence on Philosophy

Download or read book Volume 11 Tome III Kierkegaard s Influence on Philosophy written by Jon Stewart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kierkegaard's relation to the field of philosophy is a particularly complex and disputed one. He rejected the model of philosophical inquiry that was mainstream in his day and was careful to have his pseudonymous authors repeatedly disassociate themselves from philosophy. But although it seems clear that Kierkegaard never regarded himself as a philosopher, there can be no doubt that his writings contain philosophical ideas and insights and have been profoundly influential in a number of different philosophical traditions. The present volume attempts to document these different traditions of the philosophical reception of Kierkegaard's thought. Tome III traces Kierkegaard's influence on Anglophone philosophy. Today it can be said that Kierkegaard has made some serious inroads into mainstream Anglophone philosophy, with many authors seeking inspiration in his works for current discussions concerning ethics, personal identity, philosophy of religion, and philosophical anthropology.

Book Making History

  • Author : Richard Flacks

  • Release : 1988
  • ISBN : 9780231048330
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Making History written by Richard Flacks and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the puzzling phenomenon of new veiling practices among lower middle class women in Cairo, Egypt. Although these women are part of a modernizing middle class, they also voluntarily adopt a traditional symbol of female subordination. How can this paradox be explained? An explanation emerges which reconceptualizes what appears to be reactionary behavior as a new style of political struggle--as accommodating protest. These women, most of them clerical workers in the large government bureaucracy, are ambivalent about working outside the home, considering it a change which brings new burdens as well as some important benefits. At the same time they realize that leaving home and family is creating an intolerable situation of the erosion of their social status and the loss of their traditional identity. The new veiling expresses women's protest against this. MacLeod argues that the symbolism of the new veiling emerges from this tense subcultural dilemma, involving elements of both resistance and acquiescence.

Book Personal Commitments

  • Publisher : Orbis Books
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 1608332950
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Personal Commitments written by Margaret A. Farley and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2013 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised edition of a classic text long out of print--a moral analysis of making, keeping, and breaking personal commitments. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Farley explores how commitments, rooted in the story of God's love, are acts of free choice and love that yield a claim. Farley's reflections are also rooted in the concrete experiences of people who strive to be faithful to what they have claimed to love: "My concern is to name something that I think is, after all, common to all of our lives an experience, a reality, perhaps a problem, a challenge, something that is sometimes a source of joy, sometimes a cause of tragedy." In eight short chapters Farley explores the nature and meaning of commitment as it is played out in our lives, addressing love, fidelity, a sense of obligation, and covenant. She also reflects on whether each commitment must be kept, and what we should do if, despite our best efforts, our commitments break down. "A brilliant study, in the literal sense that it brings needed light and clarity to a great deal of our everyday experience of sorting out, changing, reaffirming, attempting to prioritize, and wrestling with the constantly varying demands of our many freely chosen commitments." Anne E. Patrick (of the original edition) Of the original edition, Paul Wadell wrote, "Personal Commitments is a superb book that cannot be recommended too highly. Though richly research and tightly argued, its style and method make it accessible to anyone wishing to explore the commitments we make and the wholeness we seek when we make them." Another reviewer wrote "Personal Commitments is far more than a book on the ethics of commitment and obligation; rather, it is a searching account of love in both the personal and social relationships that form human life.

Book Modern Honor

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anthony Cunningham
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2013-08-21
  • ISBN : 113405887X
  • Pages : 199 pages

Download or read book Modern Honor written by Anthony Cunningham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the notion of honor with an eye to dissecting its intellectual demise and with the aim of making a case for honor’s rehabilitation. Western intellectuals acknowledge honor’s influence, but they lament its authority. For Western democratic societies to embrace honor, it must be compatible with social ideals like liberty, equality, and fraternity. Cunningham details a conception of honor that can do justice to these ideals. This vision revolves around three elements—character (being), relationships (relating), and activities and accomplishment (doing). Taken together, these elements articulate a shared aspiration for excellence. We can turn the tables on traditional ills of honor—serious problems of gender, race, and class—by forging a vision of honor that rejects lives predicated on power and oppression.
