Book Liner Notes for the Revolution

Download or read book Liner Notes for the Revolution written by Daphne A. Brooks and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning Black feminist music critic takes us on an epic journey through radical sound from Bessie Smith to Beyoncé. Daphne A. Brooks explores more than a century of music archives to examine the critics, collectors, and listeners who have determined perceptions of Black women on stage and in the recording studio. How is it possible, she asks, that iconic artists such as Aretha Franklin and Beyoncé exist simultaneously at the center and on the fringe of the culture industry? Liner Notes for the Revolution offers a startling new perspective on these acclaimed figures—a perspective informed by the overlooked contributions of other Black women concerned with the work of their musical peers. Zora Neale Hurston appears as a sound archivist and a performer, Lorraine Hansberry as a queer Black feminist critic of modern culture, and Pauline Hopkins as America’s first Black female cultural commentator. Brooks tackles the complicated racial politics of blues music recording, song collecting, and rock and roll criticism. She makes lyrical forays into the blues pioneers Bessie Smith and Mamie Smith, as well as fans who became critics, like the record-label entrepreneur and writer Rosetta Reitz. In the twenty-first century, pop superstar Janelle Monae’s liner notes are recognized for their innovations, while celebrated singers Cécile McLorin Salvant, Rhiannon Giddens, and Valerie June take their place as cultural historians. With an innovative perspective on the story of Black women in popular music—and who should rightly tell it—Liner Notes for the Revolution pioneers a long overdue recognition and celebration of Black women musicians as radical intellectuals.

Book Working Women in Mexico City

Download or read book Working Women in Mexico City written by Susie S. Porter and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years from the Porfiriato to the post-Revolutionary regimes were a time of rising industrialism in Mexico that dramatically affected the lives of workers. Much of what we know about their experience is based on the histories of male workers; now Susie Porter takes a new look at industrialization in Mexico that focuses on women wage earners across the work force, from factory workers to street vendors. Working Women in Mexico City offers a new look at this transitional era to reveal that industrialization, in some ways more than revolution, brought about changes in the daily lives of Mexican women. Industrialization brought women into new jobs, prompting new public discussion of the moral implications of their work. Drawing on a wealth of material, from petitions of working women to government factory inspection reports, Porter shows how a shifting cultural understanding of working women informed labor relations, social legislation, government institutions, and ultimately the construction of female citizenship. At the beginning of this period, women worked primarily in the female-dominated cigarette and clothing factories, which were thought of as conducive to protecting feminine morality, but by 1930 they worked in a wide variety of industries. Yet material conditions transformed more rapidly than cultural understandings of working women, and although the nation's political climate changed, much about women's experiences as industrial workers and street vendors remained the same. As Porter shows, by the close of this period women's responsibilities and rights of citizenship—such as the right to work, organize, and participate in public debate—were contingent upon class-informed notions of female sexual morality and domesticity. Although much scholarship has treated Mexican women's history, little has focused on this critical phase of industrialization and even less on the circumstances of the tortilleras or market women. By tracing the ways in which material conditions and public discourse about morality affected working women, Porter's work sheds new light on their lives and poses important questions for understanding social stratification in Mexican history.

Book Bliss In The Wild

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cyndi Swall
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020-03-14

  • Pages : 162 pages

Download or read book Bliss In The Wild written by Cyndi Swall and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-14 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So, what is this thing called bliss and why is everyone following it? In our on-going competition to keep up with the feminine ideal, there are countless daily opportunities for us to miss the bar set by Victoria's Secret, Martha Stewart, PTA room mothers, and Cosmopolitan magazine. One thing I've learned in working with hundreds of coaching clients over the years is the distinct need to expand our core definition of "bliss." I've learned that naturally happy people don't live in a constant state of Zen. People who show up from a place of consistent joy are awake to the whole human experience-the good, the bad, and the ugly. Maybe that's not what you wanted to hear. Perhaps you had hoped this was a guidebook for being happy all the time. Bliss doesn't mean you have your life all figured out and that problems elude you. (Spoiler Alert: That will never happen!) It just means you choose to find moments of appreciation and beauty, not just when the evidence is good, but through whatever monotony or hell is going on in your life. This interactive book will challenge your thinking about the concept of both bliss and chaos in your life as it takes you on a light-hearted, fun and tactical journey to discovering what brings you joy and how to get there more often.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open and available to readers from different backgrounds, experiences, and faiths, this book dissolves the myths that keep you from prayer so you too can see God’s work in your life, in the life of your family, your community, and world. Devoid of "Christianese" or hard-to-get religious concepts, McCann shares fresh insight through twelve easy-to-remember prayers like "basket prayer," "patchwork prayer," and "flag prayer." Blended with stories from her real life: working with migrant workers, standing in bread lines, visiting hippie nuns, Polly Alice shares her journey from budding college student to Pastor's wife; from single mother to small businesswoman; from writer to speaker; believing in God for both small and big miracles of the heart. Artist, Polly Alice McCann, has served in every capacity at your local church except lawn care and Pastor (and well, she has never baptized anyone.) Just when her hope seemed the most shattered, Polly was blown away by the story of Tabitha–an artist who came back to life. With the images of Tabitha's grieving friends holding up her creations fresh in Polly's mind, she set out to explore the idea of healing through prayer. First through small textile collages, then large oil paintings, and finally sixty-six letters to friends. Twelve of those meditations became this memoir, "Pray Like a Woman."
