Book excerpt: A romantic comedy with an unforgettable cast of characters (and way more laughs than any episode of American Idol), perfect for fans of Pitch Perfect. Meet Magnolia. Her father's dead, her boyfriend's ditched her to commit himself more fully to surfing, and her mother's depressed because she can't get cast on The Real Housewives of Orange County. All Magnolia wants is to reinvent herself. Meet Ford. Half his family is in jail, the other half probably should be, he shoplifted his way into a job at a record store, and his brother pawned his 1953 Telecaster for a quick buck. All Ford wants is to reinvent himself. Ford, meet Magnolia. When the two teens are cast in Spotlight, a reality TV singing competition, both see it as their chance to start anew. With each episode, as they live together in a Hollywood Hills mansion and sing their hearts out, Ford and Magnolia fall in love. But how genuine can that love be when a television audience is watching their every move—and when their pasts are catching up them so much faster than they can run?

Welcome to Mae Pruett’s Los Angeles, where “Nobody talks. But everybody whispers.” As a “black-bag” publicist tasked not with letting the good news out but keeping the bad news in, Mae works for one of LA’s most powerful and sought-after crisis PR firms, at the center of a sprawling web of lawyers, PR flaks, and private security firms she calls “The Beast.” They protect the rich and powerful and depraved by any means necessary. After her boss is gunned down in front of the Beverly Hills Hotel in a random attack, Mae takes it upon herself to investigate and runs headfirst into The Beast’s lawless machinations and the twisted systems it exists to perpetuate. Edgar Award-winner Jordan Harper’s Everybody Knows is addicting and alarming, a “juggernaut of a novel” and “an absolute tour de force.” It is what the crime novel can achieve in the modern age: portray the human lives at the center of vast American landscapes, and make us thrill at their attempts to face impossible odds. Download or read book Meet the Regulars written by Joshua D. Fischer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the column The Regulars on the New York magazine partner Bedford + Bowery, the celebrities and everyday people who love the local joints of the world’s coolest borough. Meet the Regulars captures a previously unseen and entertaining portrait of the people of Brooklyn and the places they love. In talking with the regulars at bars, restaurants, and shops in the world-famous borough, author Joshua Fischer delivers deep and delightful stories presented alongside stunning snapshots from accomplished photographers including Nina Westervelt (Vogue.com, New York Times), Phil Provencio (Variety, Saturday Night Live, and CBS), and Nicole Disser (Bedford + Bowery and Brooklyn Magazine online). Meet the Regulars reveals the great power in the connections we make with the people and places where we live. Originally an interview series on the New York magazine partner Bedford + Bowery, Meet the Regulars introduces us to a diverse and changing Brooklyn through its regulars: the first-generation American Latino café owner who drinks Coors out of a can and loves a good debate with the lawyer and plumber at his corner bar, the blogger who fixes her hair and heart at her cherished salon, the lady so loyal to her local bar she has its logo tattooed on her arm, the Asian hipster couple who drink and dance for "exercise" at their new-school Brooklyn hangout, and the burgeoning filmmaker who walks twenty blocks for sage advice from a legendary bartender inside a bowling alley. Familiar faces include party rocker Andrew W. K. spicing things up at the Thai joint from his early days, Saturday Night Live performer Sasheer Zamata reliving a break-up at her go-to brunch spot, Radiolab host Jad Abumrad sippin' whiskey to Black Sabbath, beloved NY1 news anchor Pat Kiernan chowing down on meatballs, actor Jessica Pimentel (Orange Is the New Black) championing her local metal bar, actor Kevin Corrigan (Goodfellas, Pineapple Express) contemplating a Guinness at his favorite Irish pub, and more. From Meet the Regulars: "These are stories about people finding a home in an ephemeral world of bars, restaurants, shops, and clubs that open, explode, and burn out like so many stars hidden in that bright and sleepless New York night sky." —Joshua D. Fischer, from his introduction Meet the regulars of Meet the Regulars: "It's a sense of continuity. You thread your history through a place. . . . That's what makes me a regular." —Jad Abumrad, host of public radio's Radiolab, regular at Splitty "Once you have the cell phone number of the bar owner, then you're a regular." —Twin comics the Lucas Brothers, regulars at Tutu's "I can tell if a person is cool if their vibe mixes with this place." —Sasheer Zamata, Saturday Night Live cast member, regular at Enid's "Brooklyn is this unattractive, could-never-go-to-the-prom borough. And now, not only does everyone want to take you to the prom, but everyone wants you on their arm." —Eric Adams, Brooklyn borough president, regular at Woodland "Read the book. Talk to everyone about it. . . . Move to Brooklyn with nothing but the contents of a suitcase. Be in the world's most annoying band. Get a bunch of hideous tattoos. Whatever." —Meredith Graves of punk band Perfect Pussy, regular at Roman's "This bar saved my life." —Ariel Pellman, costume designer, regular at the Way Station
Download or read book Three Pieces of Glass written by Eric O. Jacobsen and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loneliness is increasingly recognized as a major public health crisis that is on the rise and impacting people of all ages. Addressing the crisis of loneliness from a fresh perspective, this book introduces belonging as an overlooked but critical aspect of a flourishing Christian life. Eric Jacobsen shows how three pieces of glass--the car windshield, TV, and smartphone--are emblematic of significant societal shifts that have created a cultural habit of physical isolation. We feel increasingly disconnected from the people and places around us. Jacobsen explains how adopting everyday practices and making changes in our neighborhoods can help us create a sense of belonging and rediscover what belonging in a place looks like. In order to effectively solve the problem of loneliness, we need to recover patterns and practices of community life that encourage us to form meaningful connections with people and stories that are part of the places where we live, work, and worship. To this end, Jacobsen offers four redemptive strategies for living a more intentional and spiritual life.

For starters, they are all pop stars that have enjoyed the experience of having their songs reach the Number One position on the American music charts. They are also among the 140 artists who responded to writer Randolph Michael's call to be questioned for this book, Flashbacks to Happiness, which is a survey of hit songs of the 1980's and what it took to make them. Readers who are interested in popular music, and the '80's decade in particular, will find the interviews included within these pages to be fascinating testaments of how the music industry has changed to such a drastic extent in the last 20 years. It also details how artists have managed to keep their careers alive despite today's increasingly unstable marketplace and often-fickle music buying public.
Download or read book Know Ye Not This Parable written by David L. Cain and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2006-06-13 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Know Ye Not This Parable Synopsis Know ye not this parable? And how then will ye know all parables? The sower soweth the word. And these are they by the wayside, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time; afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, and the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. Mark 4:13-19 The above scripture is the basis for this novel that is targeted toward the religious/inspirational fictional genre. The story centers on its two main characters, Cassandra and Jazzrah. Cassandra is a thirty year old African American professional engineer from Detroit, Michigan. Having overcome numerous life obstacles (poverty, drugs, sickness, etc.) early in her life, Cassandra finally achieved success. Jazzrah began his life as a created angel in heaven. With his angelic brother Seth always at his side, Jazzrah enjoyed singing daily with the other angels. He sang praises every day until he encountered Bial, whose job was to spread Gods glory each morning by spreading his wings toward the rising sun. Sin set in when Bial became puffed up and started to believe that the glory came from him and not God. He successfully convinced a third of all of the angels, including Jazzrah, to abandon their assignments and follow him. For their sin against the Father, Bial and the other disobedient angels were expelled from their heavenly environment. On earth in his new environment, Jazzrah was charged with collecting the souls of one million women. Upon completing his assignment, he would be promoted in Bials earthy and wicked regime. The only boundary was that he had to identify the targeted soul at birth. He met Cassandra the day of her birth in Detroit and began planning immediately to collect her soul by throwing the five acts of deception outlined in the above scripture at her over the thirty year period. Affliction, persecution, cares of the world, deceitfulness of riches, and lusts were strategically employed to push Cassandra to the edge. On a cold December night Cassandra had finally reached the edge. No longer capable of dealing with life, Cassandra stands poised on a roof top ready to end her life. In the background on the roof, a silent witness ( Jazzrah ) watches in anticipation. As she takes one step forward, the remaining source of angelic goodness in Jazzrah sets off a war against his wickedness. The book chronicles the vents that brought Jazzrah and Cassandra together and resolves the spiritual conflict.

Book excerpt: A fascinating look at one of the greatest shows of all time. For eleven seasons, Cheers was a critically acclaimed program, ultimately earning more than 100 Emmy nominations and securing 28 wins, including 4 for best comedy series. One of the most popular shows of all time, the series centered on a group of Boston, Massachusetts locals who gathered to drink and socialize. Bar owner Sam Malone was the de facto leader of the group and boss to Carla Tortelli, Coach Ernie Pantuso, Woody Boyd, and Diane Chambers, Sam’s on-again, off again paramour. Regular patrons Norm Peterson and Cliff Claven completed this ersatz family, later joined by Frasier Crane; his wife Lilith; and Rebecca Howe, a new foil for Sam. Cheers not only provided laughs, it revolutionized American sitcoms with its long-running stories and famous will-they-won’t-they relationship of Sam and Diane. In Cheers: A Cultural History, Joseph J. Darowski and Kate Darowski offer an engaging analysis of the show, providing insights into both the onscreen stories and the efforts behind the scenes to shape this beloved classic. The authors examine the series as a whole but also focus on the show’s key characters, narrative arcs, and many themes, ranging from alcoholism to adultery. This volume also provides close looks at how set design, class issues, and gender roles informed the series throughout its run. Also included is an opinionated compendium of every episode, highlighting the peaks and dips in quality across more than a decade of television. Cheers: A Cultural History will appeal to the show’s many fans and bring back beloved memories of the place where everybody knows your name.
Download or read book Directed by James Burrows written by James Burrows and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2023-06-13 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Being directed by the Jimmy Burrows, while on Friends, was like hitting the jackpot. I’m delighted that everyone can now share in his incredible insight with this book.”—JENNIFER ANISTON From the director of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, and Will & Grace comes an insightful and nostalgic behind-the-scenes memoir that’s “as difficult to put down as a Friends marathon is to turn off” (The Washington Post). Legendary sitcom director James Burrows has spent five decades making America laugh. Here readers will find never-revealed stories behind the casting of the dozens of great sitcoms he directed, as well as details as to how these memorable shows were created, how they got on the air, and how the cast and crew continued to develop and grow. Burrows also examines his own challenges, career victories, and defeats, and provides advice for aspiring directors, writers, and actors. All this from the man who helped launch the careers of Ted Danson, Kelsey Grammer, Woody Harrelson, Jennifer Aniston, Debra Messing, and Melissa McCarthy, to name a few. Burrows talks fondly about the inspiration he found during his childhood and young adult years, including his father, legendary playwright and Broadway director Abe Burrows. From there he goes on to explain his rigorous work ethic, forged in his early years in theater, where he did everything from stage managing to building sets to, finally, directing. Transitioning to television, Burrows locked into a coveted job with The Mary Tyler Moore Show, where he first observed and then started to apply his craft. Directing most of the episodes of Taxi came next, where he worked closely with writers/producers Glen and Les Charles. The three formed a remarkable creative partnership that helped Burrows achieve his much sought-after goal of ownership and agency over a project, which came with the creating and directing of the seminal and beloved hit Cheers. Burrows has directed more than seventy-five pilots that have gone to series and over a thousand episodes, more than any other director in history. Directed by James Burrows is a heart-and-soul master class in sitcom, revealing what it truly takes to get a laugh.
