Without it the ministry becomes formal, the Church cold, the world indifferent. A passion less ministry can never arouse a cold Church, and a cold Church can never witness convincingly to an indifferent world. The Christian Church to-day needs a revival Of praying, preaching, and personal testimony to the intent Of reaching and winning the lost to a living faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Book The Pastor His Own Evangelist

Download or read book The Pastor His Own Evangelist written by J. Wilbur Chapman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pastor His Own Evangelist: Methods, Texts, Seed Thoughts and Illustrations This book presents to us the ideal as regards evangelistic effort. There will always be a place in the Church for evangel ists who are called and equipped of God, and especially adapted by training and temperament to do a special work. I have always believed, and more firmly during the past few years than ever before, that the call to be an evangelist should be as distinct and clear as that which one receives to be a minister of the Gospel or a pastor of a Church. It ought to be true that every pastor would possess, in some slight degree at least, the gift to do evangelistic work, but even if this be true, neverthe less the fact remains as above stated, and in my own experience I was as clearly called to do the work to which I am now devot ing my life, as in the other days I was called to preach the Gospel in the church of a special congregation. However, I am clearly convinced that an evangelist cannot settle the prob lems of achurch, who as an emergency man is called to ren der a service which, when it is needed at all, is sorely needed. The only man of all others who can do this work and do it well, and do it continually, is the pastor himself. Any form of general evangelistic effort which does not leave him strong er in the afiection of his people is not worth while, and any evangelistic effort which fails to make his work easier when the special helper is gone, is not worthy of the name. Each pastor should be his own evangelist; at the same time, he should hold himself in readiness to assist his brother min isters. This is an ideal position to take and the suggestions made by the author of this book are practical and helpful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evangelist: His Ministry and Message There is a disposition in these times to belittle the work and the office of the evangelist. We can understand this, so far as the modernists are concerned, because the whole appeal of the true evangelist is to the saving power of God in Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit. His only message is the gospel. The modernist either denies or has lost faith (if he ever had any) in the gospel. He denies the necessity of being born again. His message is character, not calvary. His appeal is not to the Holy Spirit and His work of convicting of sin, and persuading and enabling the Sinner to believe in Jesus Christ as his one and only Saviour. He appeals to the will and self-respect of man, so we can understand the modernist's position and attitude to the evangelist and evangelistic work. In addition to the opposition of the modernists, there is a tendency in many churches to criticize and belittle the evangelists, and to ignore them in all church plans, or to encourage the pastors to carry on evangelistic campaigns Without them. This is contrary to the Word of God and the historical practice of the Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Sane Evangelism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sane Evangelism Classic Reprint written by Wm Wistar Hamilton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sane Evangelism A book on sane evangelism certainly finds a wide field of usefulness awaiting it. I am greatly pleased with the form Of words same evangelism. The phrase connects two ideas which belong together. Evangelism is one Of the most tremendous Of all the agencies of Christianity. I presume the need for a sane type Of evangelism will be conceded by all. There are churches in some regions which have been swept by a kind of evangelism which has left them twice dead, plucked up by the roots. The kind of evangelism which appeals solely to the emotions, which relies upon clap-trap and ma chinery, which in a superficial manner skims over the surface, and appeals only to those susceptible of being influenced by the spectacular, is not the kind which leaves a salutary condition in its wake. Churches which have suffered thus are to be pitied. On the other hand, churches in large numbers there are which are dying for the lack Of evangelism - churches which have conceived a prejudice against the whole idea Of evangelism, and which have gone on in their unfruitful way for many years. What they need is a profound revival Of their spiritual life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Reformed Pastor Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Reformed Pastor Classic Reprint written by Richard Baxter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Pastor Such is the opportunity on which the writer of these introductory pages seizes, for addressing his appeal to his honoured brethren of every name, and more especially to the clergy of his own church, with the view of carrying on Baxter's great design, and reviving the power of true religion amongst them. May he open his heart in all simplicity? May he at least, after thirty or forty years' observation, sug gest to his younger brethren something which may tend, under the blessing of God, to promote a re turn to primitive zeal and love amongst the clergy? May he be permitted to admonish and rouse his own conscience, Whilst he attempts to excite others? And 0, blessed Spirit of Christ descend Thou upon the writer and the readers of these pages! Vouch safe success! Fulfil thy gracious office, as the comforter of the Church, by touching our hearts, and reviving thy work effectually amongst us! Let thy ministers be open to thy reproofs, and hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches! In the first place, then, your attention, honoured and beloved brethren in Christ, shall be directed to some topics of humiliation; in the next, to some grounds of hope; and, lastly, to several points of duty, as subservient to a revival of pure Christianity amongst us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evangelism: A Re-Interpretation There are multiplying signs at the present time of a growing uneasiness, both on the part of ministers and members of all Christian Churches, on the subject of Evangelism. The Church has been occupied for a considerable period with different aspects of the truth, critical, theological, social - all of which are important, but they are beginning to realize that her chief business in this world is to preach the gospel and to save the unsaved. And it is just here that so many able ministries and highly organized Churches seem to be failing, while there are powerful influences at work which hinder the accomplishment of this task. Doubtless for each new day - just as there must be a restatement of ancient truth - Evangelism must take a new form. But a great evangelistic movement in all the Churches is already overdue and in order that it may arise, the conviction of its necessity and possibility must be deepened and extended. The purpose of this book is to contribute towards this much desired end. The Editor has been fortunate enough to secure the assistance of men whose authority on matters of religion will be universally recognized. They belong to different schools of. Book The Evangelization of the World in This Generation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Evangelization of the World in This Generation Classic Reprint written by John R. Mott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evangelization of the World in This Generation The Gospel which is to be preached to every creature is the Gospel which St. Paul and the other early Christians preached. Its main out lines are set forth in the fifteenth chapter of the first letter to the Corinthians, in which St. Paul sums up the Gospel which he had preached to them I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures and that He was buried and that He hath been raised on the third day according to the scriptures.1 The many side-lights on the preaching of the Apostles given in the Acts and in the Epistles make plain that the substance and burden of their message or gospel were the facts about Jesus Christ - His wonderful life and works and teachings; His death for the remission of sins; His resurrection and ascension; His constant intercession; His sending of the Holy Spirit to convict, to trans form, to guide and to energize men; and the promise of His own return. Book Practical Ideals in Evangelism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Ideals in Evangelism Classic Reprint written by Charles Herbert Rust and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Ideals in Evangelism At few periods of the church's history has its attention been so generally directed to the subject of evangelism. The form may be somewhat changed, but the thing itself looms up large. It is being more and more felt that the church or pastor that is unevangelistic is missing the mark. There is a questioning also as to the best methods and means. "How shall we get what we so generally desire?" people are asking. This book is an effort to get at an answer. Mr. Rust has had wide experience, and is a most enthusiastic believer in the work whose claims he advocates. It is earnestly felt that his book cannot be otherwise than a helpful influence among our ministers and churches, and for evangelists as well. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Position of the Evangelical Party in the Episcopal Church IT is from no desire to intermeddle with the inter nal affairs of another denomination of Christians, that we introduce to our readers the subject which we have placed at the head of this article. Nor is it from any wish to take advantage of the present troubles and growing dissensions of' the Episcopal Church to make converts to our better faith, or to make reprisals for the accessions which they have sought to gain from the disputes and divisions of other denominations. We have listened in calmer times with preper interest to their proclamations of their own unity, while other churches have been rent into factions, or threatened with schism. We have seen a few from other churches, charmed with this proclamation of' unity, and professedly won by the hope of peace, leave the connections in which they were trained, and attach themselves to Episco pacy. But they have not been men whose departure the churches have had occasion to regard as a serious calamity, or whose recovery would be worth any very serious efi'ort. We are content that they should minister in their new connection, we hope with greater. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
