Download or read book Dogod written by Bill Reed and published by Reed Independent. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ed: following is the Thomas-Nelson-Australia’s 1977 blurb for the original edition, but here annotated, in italics, by the author for this reprint. ‘Bill Reed’s first novel is a celebration of the Australian language. ‘Dogod’ employs a language that uses our sounds, our national images, our landscapes and our slang to examine our rhythms and forms of speech. Leading back through the images-as-words of Joyce, Carroll, Thackeray and Shakespeare…’ (I thought I was the one making with the jokes here?) ‘… here is a lament for the human condition as it is affected in modern times.’ (I lamented a bit over the manuscript too. All I know was it was a neat pile of typescript pages but next morning it had paws marks all over it.) ‘As a bone to a dog, so are we as toys to the gods. Hence Dog-god – a chaotic deity tossing and pouncing with bestial delight on His/Its favourite human plaything, Jelf. A walking disaster area, Jelf hardly needs Dogod’s assistance to attract the natural and unnatural contempt of his associates as he lurches on his apocalyptic journey…’ ( ‘apocalyptic’ is first-class; with his allotted dog pass, Jelf travels Economy) ‘… through Australia’s visible and invisible landscapes.’ ‘’Dogod’ is both funny and profound. It is an examination of the comic-tragedy that is within each of us, and within our society. Its wit, its humour and its deeper purposes are brilliantly sustained. Its challenge is for you the reader.’ (At least putting reader, singular, was spot on.) (NB: Also, there’s nothing about the plot here. I remember distinctly that there was one – as in Jelf chasing Alyce chasing Quilty chasing Henry chasing a whole host of others or vice versa, while the Australian dream – really doggedly -- chases them all and keeps spoiling the plot like the real hound it is.) --------- About the author Bill Reed is a playwright, novelist and short-story wroughtist. He dangles, shaken, hanging from the pelt.

The painful, funny struggles of the women in this book - mothers, daughters, sisters, neighbours, doctors, patients - will resonate with readers everywhere.' KATHERINE HEINY, author of GAMES AND RITUALS 'Goodbye Birdie Greenwing is one of those books that lingers... I laughed, cried and felt more compassionate for reading it. A triumph.' JENNIE GODFREY, author of THE LIST OF SUSPICIOUS THINGS 'Oh, the exquisite, tender misfits in Goodbye Birdie Greenwing! I love them all. CATHERINE NEWMAN, author of WE ALL WANT IMPOSSIBLE THINGS ___________ Great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave and impossible to forget ... Birdie Greenwing has been at a loose end ever since her beloved twin sister and husband passed away. Too proud and stubborn to admit she is lonely, Birdie’s world has shrunk. But then some new neighbours move in to the house next door. Jane has come to Brighton for a fresh start, away from her ferociously protective mother Min. While Jane finds it hard to stand up for herself, her daughter Frankie has no problem telling people what she does and doesn’t want. Ada Kowalski has come to England to follow her dreams, but her new life is harder than she expected. When a series of incidents brings their lives crashing together, the three find that there is always more to a person than meets the eye ... Download or read book Have You Seen the Rabbit in the Nut written by Simon Bailey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel follows the life of the character Rob Jordan and is divided into three sections; Shouting to myself, Nine out of ten videos are shit and Because of the ants. In the first section, set in 1994, Rob is a struggling newly qualified teacher; lonely and frustrated at home and depressed at work. In section two, in 1999, Rob has been promoted to the dole and spends his time fantasising about murdering his vicar flatmate, whilst becoming involved in an ill-fated love triangle. The last section, set in 2004, sees Rob on the run and a series of flashbacks reveal that he has killed a man. The tone is comic but the novel does attempt to deal with contemporary issues. At a rough estimate, there is a profound slice of wisdom about every six gags. Six and a half maximum. And if you are still not convinced, if you do read a more amusing book about teaching or being on the dole this millennium, you get a free rabbit in a nut. Guaranteed.

Part road trip and part celebration of idiotic male friendship, Looking for Sarah Jane Smith is sure to strike a chord with those who appreciate Withnail & I, Peep Show and Bill Hicks. '...if there's one thing that stands out about this, it's how bloody funny it is. I actually packed Looking for Sarah Jane Smith for a long-haul flight and such a page-turner did it prove to be that I finished it within a couple of hours.' - Living Abroad Magazine '...A bitter, crude, but funny book... These boys are not particularly likeable, but their story is raw, honest, unsophisticated and rooted in bittersweet reality.' - Post Newspapers 'An agreeably raucous novel that touches on Dr Who and men behaving badly. Its strong language and adult scenes make it the perfect Christmas gift for that impressionable nephew.' - The West Australian Book 2: Girls Like Funny Boys Part coming of age story, part exploration of the maddening nature of dreams, Girls Like Funny Boys is a potent mix of sexual obsession, guilt and fame. "Gina crouched, resting on her haunches to continue the conversation. Her legs were too far apart. There was a hole in her black tights just above the left knee. Johnny felt a hot urge to poke a finger in it. He wished she'd leave him alone. He wished she wasn't wearing tights. He stared at her lopsided mouth and the way her fat lower lip jutted out. It was so red it bordered on purple, the colour of strawberries on the turn." Meet Johnny Goodwin. Now in his last year at school, he's finally caught her eye by starring in a teacher-baiting pantomime. Dreams are already taking shape of a career in entertainment, perhaps with Angie by his side. All he's got to do is pass his exams, get to uni and keep away from Gina Wood, that weird girl who once let him touch her… 'Girls Like Funny Boys wasn't what I expected - and that's simply not fair as Dave Franklin's not meant to be writing to a formula. But I really didn't expect to find this as engaging, involving and quite as emotional as I did. I loved Johnny, rode the waves of his life every step of the way. Most of all I just loved this book.' - Australian Crime Fiction Book 3: To Dare A Future A van driver with abduction and murder on his mind. An eleven-year-old girl snatched on her way home from ballet. A tortured reporter, happy to use her death and the terrifying reign of a child killer to help make his name… To Dare A Future – We all have black thoughts. It's just some of us act on them. Her teenaged son, Sam, is on trial for the murder of two senior citizens, a crime allegedly committed while he was sleepwalking. Greer is also battling breast cancer, a disease that has left her with a litany of physical side effects and deep anger toward the incompetence of the medical profession. Yet, in the face of all these obstacles, GreerÍs story is full of hope and delicious dark humour. Her indelible strength is fuelled by her unconditional love for her son and the moral support she receives from her 88-year-old aunt, a chain-smoking, vodka-swilling, vitamin-popping senior whose continual commentary on the morbid news of the day is wickedly funny and provocative. The Barking Dog, the fifth novel from Cordelia Strube, CanadaÍs pre-eminent writer of urban fiction, is an unforgettable portrait of modern life in these media-saturated, apocalyptic times.

Download or read book i dog written by Jonathan Wesley Bell and published by First Edition Design Pub.. This book was released on 2015-02-16 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Randal Peyton Purcell can't guess what's coming when his doorbell rings one quiet Sunday in New York. The ringing interrupts his life of arrogant, self-satisfaction, of what he sees as his effortless superiority. His is an indifference to the weak and downtrodden. What he lets in at the doorbell is a spirit that becomes a stray dog of mythical wickedness. This is I DOG or 'Johann Sebastian Bark,' as Randy's German landlord and landlady name him. Johann is not only beyond description, his incessant barking destroys the peace and harmony of Randy's home. From there on, he stumbles through the wreckage into the secrets of elderly Nazis and to murder most foul. In this satiric novel, Randy's descent through the rings of hell brings him into the clutches of a nymphomaniac Korean Princess, to being kidnapped by a psychopathic teenage robber who endlessly haunts the Interstate but cannot drive. Finally, a Jew from Brooklyn who is convinced he's black, catches him up. Randy must survive a nightmarish theme park, a cataclysmic gun battle and an apocalyptic inferno before he can make a frantic dash to freedom through the Okefeenokee swamp. Irreverent, humorous and sarcastic, I Dog forces Randy to change his inner vision. He must shed his snakeskin of privilege and haughtiness before he can find a humble salvation. I DOG is comic on virtually everything. While It may offend, it is with good humor. On its serious side, I DOG gives numerous considerations on our communal 'how' and 'why' – and particularly mocks our belief that we are good enough to be made in God's likeness. I DOG says not so, but rather that we come in the image of our canine brethren. We jump through hoops and wear circus ruffs. One way or another all of us are dogs. I DOG. Praise for GUTTED: “Only two books in and Tony Black is already one of my favourite living crime writers. Gutted is simply superb.” —Nick Stone, author of Mr Clarinet “Tony Black is the latest of the seemingly unending stream of good Scottish crime writers who have in common the ability to portray vividly the underbelly of Scottish inner-city criminality ... The dialogue fizzes and the whole is suffused with black humour. Celtic Noir is in rude health.” —The Times “Sitting somewhere between the raw grit of Welsh and the genius of Rankin, Gutted deserves to be the thriller hit of the summer.” —Scottish Daily Record “As washed-up private detectives go, Gus Dury is compelling—he’s as hard as any criminal, as twice as self-destructive.” —William Leith, Evening Standard “Powerful, focused and intense…and then it gets better. Get your money down early on this young man—he’s dead serious and deadly accurate.” —Andrew Vachss
