Book Buddhism Is Not What You Think

Download or read book Buddhism Is Not What You Think written by Steve Hagen and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical, straight-forward guide to the true purpose of Buddhism, examining the essential & enduring questions at the heart of the Buddha’s teachings. Bestselling author and renowned Zen teacher Steve Hagen penetrates the most essential and enduring questions at the heart of the Buddha’s teachings: How can we see the world in each moment, rather than merely as what we think, hope, or fear it is? How can we base our actions on reality, rather than on the longing and loathing of our hearts and minds? How can we live lives that are wise, compassionate, and in tune with reality? And how can we separate the wisdom of Buddhism from the cultural trappings and misconceptions that have come to be associated with it? Drawing on down-to-earth examples from everyday life and stories from Buddhist teachers past and present, Hagen tackles these fundamental inquiries with his trademark lucid, straightforward prose. The newcomer to Buddhism will be inspired by this accessible and provocative introduction, and those more familiar with Buddhism will welcome this much needed hands-on guide to understanding what it truly means to be awake. By being challenged to question what we take for granted. We come to see the world as it truly is. Buddhism Is Not What You Think offers a profound and clear path to joy and freedom. Praise for Buddhism Is Not What You Think “Hagen’s writing flows in a tranquil way, like a spring trickling up effortlessly from the earth. One tends to stop judging it and just appreciate it for its own sake. Since this appreciation is his advice for dealing with everything, the sentences themselves actually create what they are describing.” —Robert M. Pirsig, author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance “This is not just another nice book about Buddhism, one telling us what we like to hear and are used to hearing. No—it is a clear and challenging showing of the fundamental truth of our lives. This is an exceptional book. Make good use of it.” —Charlotte Joko Beck, author of Everyday Zen

Book excerpt: Life with my mother and her sisters - five of them was a time of frequent laughter, excitement, and joy all in the lives of women who lived through two wars, the great depression, poverty and a young limited medical profession. I looked for what kept those women happy, found what I already knew. They directed their lives toward a constant state of grace. They were vigilant, frequently warned in the confessional about the possibility of a sudden death with a stained soul going straight to hell. There were visits to the confessional for forgiveness of sins, and for a renewal of spirit that directed them to keep their children in the state of grace. They were vigilant, and in most homes in those times there was an ongoing state of war between the generations, with cruelty toward a wayward child. This novel is the story of my relearning what I already knew.

Download or read book Children of Crisis written by Robert Coles and published by Back Bay Books. This book was released on 2009-11-29 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s Robert Coles began studying, living among, and, above all, listening to American children. The results of his efforts -- revealed in five volumes published between 1967 and 1977 -- constitute one of the most searching and vigorous social studies ever undertaken by one person in the United States. Here, heard often in their own voices, are America's "children of crisis": African American children caught in the throes of the South's racial integration; The children of impoverished migrant workers in Appalachia; Children whose families were transformed by the migration from South to North, from rural to urban communities; Latino, Native American, and Eskimo children in the poorest communities of the American West; The children of America's wealthiest families confronting the burden of their own privilege. This volume restores to print a masterwork of psychological and sociological inquiry -- a book that, in its focus on how children learn and develop in the face of rapid change and social upheaval, speaks directly and pointedly to our own times.

Book Nature s Cancer Fighting Foods

Download or read book Nature s Cancer Fighting Foods written by Verne Varona and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a solid foundation of the healing properties of good nutrition, this book empowers readers with the information they need to make the best choices and to gain control over their total health and well-being - physical, emotional, and spiritual. While addressing the specific needs of those with a diagnosis of cancer, Varona explores the key factors that science and experience have shown to influence the path of prevention and recovery. Grounded in documented research from leading medical institutions - along with studies of the world's healthiest populations - nutrition educator Verne Varona has developed a breakthrough nutritional and lifestyle programme for immunity building and cancer prevention and recovery. This book provides detailed diet and lifestyle modifications that will reinforce the body's immunity and reduce cell-damage to an absolute minimum. While the bulk of this book is devoted to physical nutrition, eating the right foods is not the whole picture. No matter what course of treatment a patient may choose, clinical research and anecdotal testimony have shown that those who have embraced a range of self-healing choices not only see a positive impact on their physical and psychological well-being but inevitably enhance their chances of survival. The most influential of these choices are: life purpose; positive attitude; managing stress; sense of humor; love and social support; emotional expression; and faith. Along with good nutrition, a healthy lifestyle, and physical exercise, these choices contribute to a more comprehensive and complete healing.

Book The Naval Chronicle

Download or read book The Naval Chronicle written by and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1818 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Naval Chronicle, published in 40 volumes between 1799 and 1818, is a key source for British maritime and military history. This reissue is the first complete printed reproduction of what was the most influential maritime publication of its day. The subjects covered range from accounts of battles and lists of ships to notices of promotions and marriages, courts martial and deaths, and biographies, poetry and letters. Each volume also contains engravings and charts relating to naval engagements and important harbours around the world. Volume 39 (1818) includes an 'autobiographical' memoir, allegedly written on St Helena by Napoleon. The financial concerns of a post-war navy are obvious. William Wilberforce was involved with a committee set up for the relief of the thousands of destitute former sailors in London. Concerns were expressed about the building up of the American navy, and appeals made for the ending of impressment.

Book Cold Mountain Poems

Download or read book Cold Mountain Poems written by Han Shan and published by Shambhala. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Popularized in the West by Beat Generation writers Gary Snyder and Jack Kerouac, T'ang-era rebel poet Han Shan is an icon of Chinese poetry and Zen. He and his sidekick, Shih Te, are known as the laughing, ragged pair who left their poetry on stones, trees, farmhouses, and monastery walls, calling others to "the Cold Mountain way" of simple, honest, joyful living. J.P. Seaton takes a fresh look at these poets, as well as at Wang Fan-chih, who followed in the outsider tradition a few centuries later. Forceful and wry, all three condemn the excesses of mind and matter that prevent people from attaining true enlightenment. With a comprehensive introduction and commentary throughout, this collection points to where, in a world that's always moving and so full of suffering, stillness and clarity can be found."--P.
