Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scheduling irrigation is about planning when and how much water to apply to a crop to achieve crop production or a particular quality. The principles of scheduling water apply to all crops, however the critical timing, methods and techniques can vary with the crop. This book is about: · the ways in which specific crops respond to stress and the effects of the timing and degree of stress and the growth stage of the crop · evapotranspiration (ET) and crop water use to schedule irrigations · developing an irrigation schedule · terms used to describe the amount of water available to a crop · soil moisture probes and where to locate them · water quality issues to consider. TABLE OF CONTENTS Chapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: Safety Chapter 3: Environmental Impacts Of Irrigation Chapter 4: The Need For Water Varies Chapter 5: Factors Affecting Evapotranspiration Chapter 6: Scheduling Irrigations Chapter 7: How Soil Holds Water Chapter 8: Data From Soil Moisture Probes Chapter 9: Do You Need A Calibrated Probe? Book Deficit Irrigation Practices

Download or read book Deficit Irrigation Practices written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of improving water productivity, there is a growing interest in deficit irrigation, an irrigation practice whereby water supply is reduced below maximum levels and mild stress is allowed with minimal effects on yield. Under conditions of scarce water supply and drought, deficit irrigation can lead to greater economic gains than maximizing yields per unit of water for a given crop; farmers are more inclined to use water more efficiently, and more water-efficient cash crop selection helps optimize returns. However, this approach requires precise knowledge of crop response to water as drought tolerance varies considerably by species, cultivar and stage of growth. The studies present the latest research concepts and involve various practices for deficit irrigation. Both annual and perennial crops were exposed to different levels of water stress, either during a particular growth phase, throughout the whole growing season or in a combination of growth stages. The overall finding, based on the synthesis of the different contributions, is that deficit or regulated-deficit irrigation can be beneficial where appropriately applied. Substantial savings of water can be achieved with little impact on the quality and quantity of the harvested yield. However, to be successful, an intimate knowledge of crop behavior is required, as crop response to water stress varies considerably.

Book Evapotranspiration

Download or read book Evapotranspiration written by Giacomo Gerosa and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-11-09 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents an overview of the direct measurement techniques of evapotranspiration with related applications to the water use optimization in the agricultural practice and to the ecosystems study. Different measuring techniques at leaf level (porometry), plant-level (sap-flow, lysimetry) and agro-ecosystem level (Surface Renewal, Eddy Covariance, Multi layer BREB), are presented with detailed explanations and examples. For the optimization of the water use in agriculture, detailed measurements on transpiration demands of crops and different cultivars, as well as results of different irrigation schemes and techniques (i.e. subsurface drip) in semi-arid areas for open-field, greenhouse and potted grown plants are presented. Aspects on ET of crops in saline environments, effects of ET on groundwater quality in xeric environments as well as the application of ET to climatic classification are also depicted. The book provides an excellent overview for both, researchers and student,s who intend to address these issues.
