Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller “A touching series of essays in which Evans, with Chu’s invisible pen, explores how one might find a path forward in Christianity beyond conservative evangelicalism” -Eliza Griswold, The New Yorker “Evans died at 37, but a beautiful new book captures her brave outlook. . . . I could not help but notice the poetry in Evans’s prose. . . . What readers will find in these pages was someone deeply human: funny, irreverent, curious, wise, forgiving, nonjudgmental.” -Maggie Smith, The Washington Post A collection of original writings by Rachel Held Evans, whose reflections on faith and life continue to encourage, challenge, and influence. Rachel Held Evans is widely recognized for her theologically astute, profoundly honest, and beautifully personal books, which have guided, instructed, edified, and shaped Christians as they seek to live out a just and loving faith. At the time of her tragic death in 2019, Rachel was working on a new book about wholeheartedness. With the help of her close friend and author Jeff Chu, that work-in-progress has been woven together with some of her other unpublished writings into a rich collection of essays that ask candid questions about the stories we’ve been told—and the stories we tell—about our faith, our selves, and our world. This book is for the doubter and the dreamer, the seeker and the sojourner, those who long for a sense of spiritual wholeness as well as those who have been hurt by the Church but can’t seem to let go of the story of Jesus. Through theological reflection and personal recollection, Rachel wrestles with God’s grace and love, looks unsparingly at what the Church is and does, and explores universal human questions about becoming and belonging. An unforgettable, moving, and intimate book.

He is the future sultan, a man who wields brutal magic and only knows how to be what they've made him. She is a commoner, a woman who champions the vulnerable and treads where she does not belong. Dilay Akar is the daughter of a judge. By day, she trains the wealthy in magic, and by night, she breaks the Sultan's laws. But even those closest to her do not always appreciate what she is striving for, or believe that she can achieve it. Omar Sabri is the Sultan's tool, flaying minds open to obtain their secrets and truths. Everyone who looks at him sees only the prince-or the monster. Even he cannot see the man beneath the power and the position. When Omar secretly enlists Dilay's help in controlling his magic, it sets off a chain of events that will reshape Tamar for generations to come. Dilay will have to choose between the familiar and the powerful. Between people she cares for. And whether to hurt one to help many. The Wheel turns for balance in all things, and where love springs, may also spring hate. Wheel, she was lovely. Someone who knew exactly who they were, and what they wanted, and were moving toward it like an arrow loosed from a bow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rejected by their own kind for bearing the mark of the Shadow Monarch, the Iron Elves chose instead to serve with the human armies of the Calahrian Empire, hoping through their dedication and discipline to wipe out the stain of their birth. Their reputation is legendary -- until their commander, Konowa Swiftdragon, takes it upon himself -- for the best of reasons -- to assassinate the Viceroy. Court-martialled and exiled to the forest he despises, his beloved regiment disgraced, dishonoured and disbanded, Konowa finds himself suddenly recalled and ordered to re-form the Iron Elves for one last reconnaissance mission. But the new Iron Elves are not at all the same as they were before, and the mission is a suicidal one, with more at stake than Konowa could possibly have imagined. For the Shadow Monarch and her allies have harnessed destructive forces with the power to tear worlds apart -- and those who bear her mark have a destiny greater than they know. So begins an heroic journey in the company of a motley band of misfits, rebels and outcasts, with a central character whose engaging, brilliantly realised blend of cynicism, dry humour, duty and anguish make him unlike any other in fantasy fiction.

Book Botanical Prints

Download or read book Botanical Prints written by Henry Evans and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2011-01-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Evans (1918–1990) began making botanical prints in 1958, depicting some 1,400 subjects in 31 years. In that time, he was accorded more than 250 one–man shows in many countries around the world and in almost every state in the union. Admired by art lovers and naturalists alike, Henry's work reveals a style intriguingly personal and botanically faithful, unerring in its feeling for rhythm and design. Self–taught as a printer, botanist, and artist, he developed a unique style and technique. He drew directly from living subjects, and all subjects were portrayed life–size. He used linoleum as a printing surface and an 1852 Washington Hand Press to make the prints. All of the work was done by hand. All of the materials that were used were of the best quality, and all of the editions were limited. Each linoleum–block print was numbered, dated, and signed by the artist. After printing, the blocks were destroyed. Botanical Prints presents a vast array of Evans's work and goes one step further by providing excerpts from the artist's notebook, which illuminate not only the physical processes he used but also the brilliant mind that created both the prints and the prose.
