Download or read book American Mirror written by Roberto Saba and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-12-17 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How slave emancipation transformed capitalism in the United States and Brazil In the nineteenth century, the United States and Brazil were the largest slave societies in the Western world. The former enslaved approximately four million people, the latter nearly two million. Slavery was integral to the production of agricultural commodities for the global market, and governing elites feared the system’s demise would ruin their countries. Yet, when slavery ended in the United States and Brazil, in 1865 and 1888 respectively, what resulted was immediate and continuous economic progress. In American Mirror, Roberto Saba investigates how American and Brazilian reformers worked together to ensure that slave emancipation would advance the interests of capital. Saba explores the methods through which antislavery reformers fostered capitalist development in a transnational context. From the 1850s to the 1880s, this coalition of Americans and Brazilians—which included diplomats, engineers, entrepreneurs, journalists, merchants, missionaries, planters, politicians, scientists, and students, among others—consolidated wage labor as the dominant production system in their countries. These reformers were not romantic humanitarians, but cosmopolitan modernizers who worked together to promote labor-saving machinery, new transportation technology, scientific management, and technical education. They successfully used such innovations to improve production and increase trade. Challenging commonly held ideas about slavery and its demise in the Western Hemisphere, American Mirror illustrates the crucial role of slave emancipation in the making of capitalism.

Pablo Jiménez tiene esa capacidad. Su tratado sobre la predicación esta redactado en lenguaje sencillo y ampliamente ilustrado. Es suficientemente ameno como para servir de material suplementario o de inspiración a quienes solo quieren disfrutar un poco de buena lectura y de la cual sacar ideas para su uso personal. Download or read book Forming Intentional Disciples written by Sherry A. Weddell and published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we transmit a living, personal Catholic faith to future generations? By coming to know Jesus Christ, and following him as his disciples. These are times of immense challenge and immense opportunity for the Catholic Church. Consider these statistics for the United States. Only 30 percent of Americans who were raised Catholic are still practicing. Fully 10 percent of all adults in America are ex-Catholics. The number of marriages celebrated in the Church decreased dramatically, by nearly 60 percent, between 1972 and 2010. Only 60 percent of Catholics believe in a personal God. If the Church is to reverse these trends, the evangelizers must first be evangelized-in other words, Catholics-in-the-pew must make a conscious choice to know and follow Jesus before they can draw others to him. This work of discipleship lies at the heart of Forming Intentional Disciples, a book designed to help Church leaders, parish staff and all Catholics transform parish life from within. Drawing upon her fifteen years of experience with the Catherine of Siena Institute, Sherry Weddell leads readers through steps that will help Catholics enter more deeply into a relationship with God and the river of apostolic creativity, charisms, and vocation that flow from that relationship for the sake of the Church and the world. Learn about the five thresholds of postmodern conversion, how to open a conversation about faith and belief, how to ask thought-provoking questions and establish an atmosphere of trust, when to tell the Great Story of Jesus, how to help someone respond to God's call to intentional discipleship, and much more. And be prepared for conversion because when life at the parish level changes, the life of the whole Church will change.
Download or read book Palabras Para Rescatar written by Manuel Rodr Guez Espejo and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Complete Handbook of Spanish Verbs A Classic Reference written by Judith Noble and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete Handbook of Spanish Verbs: A Classic Reference is an invaluable reference for students, libraries, and anyone who communicates in Spanish. It provides • a quick and easy way to find the correct conjugation in all forms and tenses of the more than 4,500 Spanish verbs listed, verbs chosen as illustration of verbal changes and/or irregularities and for their frequency of usage, • the more than 5,500 irregular forms of those verbs identifying their infinitive, • a model for the full conjugation in all forms and tenses of every Spanish verb, including those not listed here, according to its category, • special charts to aid in understanding and mastering the Spanish verbal system. The book is organized in three parts. Section I: a list of more than 4,500 Spanish infinitives with one or more English equivalents and their more than 5,500 irregular forms to facilitate finding their infinitives. Each infinitive is followed by a reference number that indicates the chart giving its conjugation or that of the model verb whose pattern the infinitive follows. Sections II through X: a series of charts with • sample English translation possibilities for the various tenses and forms of Spanish verbs, • the formation, by stem and ending, of all regular verbal forms, • model verbs, each showing the full conjugation of the model verb and accompanied by a list, “Verbs of this Category,” with all the verbs in this book that follow that model. These include regular verbs, orthographic/spelling changing verbs, radical/stem changing verbs, verbs with accent shift, irregular verbs, and defective verbs. The table of contents provides, at a glance, a detailed outline of the various categories and subdivisions in these sections. Section XI: an alphabetical listing of the English translations given in the book for the Spanish infinitives found in the list at the beginning, in Section I. It must be noted that this is not intended to be a dictionary of English verbs. English verbs were not sought and then defined, rather the English equivalents given for the Spanish verbs were merely duplicated here, in alphabetical order in English.
