Book Pragmatic Faith and the Tanzanian Lutheran Church

Download or read book Pragmatic Faith and the Tanzanian Lutheran Church written by Amy Stambach and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pragmatic Faith and the Tanzanian Lutheran Church: Bishop Erasto N. Kweka’s Life and Work examines the operations and organization of the Tanzanian Lutheran church through the life and times of its longest serving diocesan bishop, Erasto N. Kweka. Amy Stambach and Aikande Kwayu develop the concept of pragmatic faith, belief-in-practice, to analyze the integration of religious experience, institutionalism, and doctrine or orthodoxy. Pragmatic faith breaks down the lingering binary found in anthropological studies of Christianity between transcendental experience and pragmatic struggle, and between religious revival as rupture or continuity. Stambach and Kwayu analyze the instrumental use of religion in practice, as well as its socially mobilized potential for revelation and transformation. A key analytic agenda of this book is to illuminate how a church that retains the organizational and ritual forms of a European mission church "became" culturally localized over time and yet, paradoxically, also existed pre-colonially. Accordingly, this book offers detailed and ethnographically-grounded perspective on how leaders and laypeople affiliated with the Tanzanian Lutheran church connect the church with other significant institutions, not only the state and the government, but also descent groups, extended families, self-help groups, and existing civic organizations, in order to live meaningfully.

Download or read book We Believe in the Holy Spirit written by Cheryl M. Peterson and published by Evangelische Verlagsanstalt. This book was released on 2021-07-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of "identity" today is contested against the backdrop of myriad forms of social, political, economic and ecological exclusion. How is identity expressed in a global Lutheran tradition whose members share common biblical, liturgical, confessional, theological and spiritual foundations yet represent diverse cultures and traditions? At the end of 2019, The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) hosted a global consultation on contemporary Lutheran identities, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The result was the papers presented in this publication. The authors—church leaders, youth, theologians, lay and ordained practitioners in local communities—explore the Spirit's work to revive and equip the faithful for vocation through the ministry of the church today and into the future of the Lutheran communion.

Book excerpt: The Bega kwa Bega partnership between the Saint Paul Area Synod congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Iringa Diocese congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) and its impact on the lives of its people (1987 - 2004). The Saint Paul Area Synod (SPAS) and the Iringa Diocese of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) have been partners in ministry since 1987. From its beginnings as a meeting between bishops, the partnership has mushroomed into involving people at the grassroots level¿reaching sixty congregations, over a thousand travelers, over 900 scholarship recipients, establishing the country¿s first private university, sponsoring construction, drilling wells for safe drinking water, and undertaking the expansion of health care facilities. This relationship of prayer, friendship, and partnership continues to grow stronger and stronger as God¿s grace spans the distance and cultural differences from Minnesota to Tanzania.
