Book Evaluation of Ultraviolet Ozone Treatment of Rocky Mountain Arsenal RMA Groundwater Treatability Study

Download or read book Evaluation of Ultraviolet Ozone Treatment of Rocky Mountain Arsenal RMA Groundwater Treatability Study written by Robert E. Buhts and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA) has been a chemical manufacturing and chemical demilitarization facility since 1942. Wastes from various chemical processes were discharged into unlined basins until construction of an asphalt-lined evaporation lake was completed in 1955. Repeated contact of rainwater and groundwater with chemical wastes in and beneath the basins has resulted in transport of chemical compounds toward the boundaries of RMA. The groundwater at RMA is known to be contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons, organophosphorous, organosulfur, and other organic compounds. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the feasibility of using ultraviolet/ozone (UV/O3) treatment to reduce the concentration of those contaminants in the RMA groundwater. This report discusses the experimental results obtained from treating RMA groundwater with UV light and ozone. The laboratory investigations used two different batch reactors and varied such parameters as ozone concentration, temperature, and wattage of UV light. Continuous flow experiments were also conducted. In batch experiments, total organic carbon removal ranged from 40 to 90 percent. The concentrations of diisopropylmethylphosphonate (DIMP) and other organic compounds were significantly reduced. In the continuous flow phase of the study, it was possible to remove 93 percent of the DIMP originally present and lower the levels of all other organic contaminants to below detectable limits. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater at Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA) has been found to contain certain organic contaminants as a result of various past and ongoing activities at the arsenal. An initial bench scale treatability study, identified a combined ultraviolet light and ozone oxidation process as having a high-potential for removing the organic contaminants. As a result of this study, a 1000 gpd field unit was obtained on a short term basis and placed in operation at RMA during the summer of 1977 to further assess the potential of the UV/ozone treatment process in removing organic contaminants from RMA groundwater. In this study, the UV/ozone process proved very successful in removing organic contaminants from the particular groundwater tested. The field-scale study was limited in scope by the configuration of the UV/ozone field unit used. The unit configuration did not allow for variable control of certain parameters such as temperature, PH, pressure, and mechanical mixing. These parameters must be evaluated as to their effect on process efficiency for the various source waters at RMA . During the limited field-scale study, three runs were made on water from PW 118 using the ULTROX unit. This work was conducted to determine if any operational problems would occur when treating water with above normal concentrations of iron and manganese. The water from PW 118 was found to contain iron and manganese in a reduced state. (jg) p3.

Book Study of Inorganic Contaminant Removal from Rocky Mountain Arsenal RMA Groundwater

Download or read book Study of Inorganic Contaminant Removal from Rocky Mountain Arsenal RMA Groundwater written by ARMY ENGINEER WATERWAYS EXPERIMENT STATION VICKSBURG MS ENVIRONMENTAL LAB. and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA)has been used as a facility for numerous military and non-military activities which have resulted in the introduction of both organic and inorganic contaminants into the groundwater. Previous treatability studies at RMA have been directed toward organic contaminants that were of concern to the Colorado State Health Department. Well monitoring at (Rocky Mountain Arsenal) has indicated that certain inorganic contaminants have migrated into the groundwater in concentrations above mandatory or suggested standards. The Waterways Experiments Station (WES) was requested to conduct a literature review and preliminary laboratory treatability studies on other sources of contaminated RMA groundwater. This report presents the results of the laboratory studies on inorganic contaminant removal from RMA groundwater conducted at WES with the literature review and treatability work conducted at RMA included in appendices as noted. The studies conducted at WES included in lime, lime/soda ash, caustic, apatite formation, and activated alumina treatment. Clarifier designs suitable for use with lime, lime/soda ash, and caustic work on modeling of the recommended treatment process is also included. A field scale pretreatment water at RMA. The information obtained from the field scale system will be presented in a separate report at a later date.

Book Report on Treatability Test of Groundwater by Ultraviolet UV Oxidation Umatilla Depot Activity Hermiston Oregon

Download or read book Report on Treatability Test of Groundwater by Ultraviolet UV Oxidation Umatilla Depot Activity Hermiston Oregon written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Report on the Treatability Test of Groundwater by Ultraviolet (UV)/Oxidation has been prepared for the U.S. Army Environmental Center (USAEC), to document the results of the treatability test performed at Umatilla Depot Activity (UMDA), Hermiston, Oregon, during the Site 4 (Explosive Washout Lagoons) pumping tests. It has been prepared for the USAEC under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Program, and is part of the Remedial Investigation/Feasibilty Study (RI/FS) activities being performed at UMDA. The objective of the treatability test was to gather data to evaluate whether UV/ozone is a feasible alternative for effectively removing explosives from groundwater at Site 4. The report presents discussions on the treatment technology, field setup, sampling/analyses, results, and useability. The results indicate that most explosives were effectively treated by UV/ozone, but that I,3,5-trinitrobenzene (1,3,5-TNB) was difficult to treat. Projected costs for a full-scale treatment system are provided. In addition, an evaluation of a field method for analyzing explosives in groundwater-which was performed in conjunction with the treatability test-is presented.

Book Pilot Scale Evaluation of Peroxone for Treatment of Contaminated Groundwater

Download or read book Pilot Scale Evaluation of Peroxone for Treatment of Contaminated Groundwater written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advance oxidation processes (AOPs) are treatment processes that rely on the hydroxyl radical to destroy contaminants in polluted waters. Peroxone is an advanced oxidation process that utilizes the reaction of ozone and hydrogen peroxide to produce hydroxyl radicals without the requirement of ultraviolet light. The USAE Waterways Experiment Station (WES) evaluated the use of peroxone at Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA) for treatment of groundwater contaminated with diisopropylmethylphosphonate (DIMP) and low levels of pesticides. This evaluation was performed at RMA using a pilot scale treatment system. Results indicate that DIMP was easily oxidized to below detection limit levels. Optimization of the process indicated that a 250 m1/1 hydrogen peroxide dose in four columns plumbed in series that were all sparged with 2.2% ozonated air at a rate of 2.5 scfm.
