Book Evaluation of Temperature and Material Combinations on Several Lubricants for Use in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite Goes Mission Filter Wheel Bearings

Download or read book Evaluation of Temperature and Material Combinations on Several Lubricants for Use in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite Goes Mission Filter Wheel Bearings written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bearing test apparatus was used to investigate lubricant degradation rates and elastohydrodynamic transition temperatures for several perfluoropolyether (Krytox) formulations, a pentasilahydrocarbon, and a synthetic hydrocarbon (Pennzane 2001 A) in an MPB 1219 bearing, which is used in the geostationary operational environmental satellite (GOES) mission filter wheel assembly. Test conditions were the following: 1000-hr duration, 75 C, 20 lb axial load, vacuum level less than 1 x 10(exp -6) Torr, and a 600-rpm rotational speed. Baseline tests were performed using unformulated Krytox 143AB, the heritage lubricant. Krytox additive formulations showed small reductions in degradation rate. Krytox GPL-105, a higher viscosity version, yielded the least amount of degradation products. Both the silahydrocarbon and Pennzane 2001A showed no signs of lubricant degradation and had ample amounts of free oil at test conclusion. Book excerpt: The elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) transition temperature was measured for a Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) sounder filter wheel bearing in a vacuum tribometer. Conditions included both an 89 N (20 lb.) hard and soft load, 600 rpm, temperatures between 23 C (73 F) and 85 C (185 F), and a vacuum of approximately 1.3 x 10(exp -5) Pa. Elastohydrodynamic to mixed lubrication started to occur at approximately 70 C (158 F). Book An Evaluation of Grease Type Ball Bearing Lubricants Operating in Various Environments

Download or read book An Evaluation of Grease Type Ball Bearing Lubricants Operating in Various Environments written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because many future spacecraft or space stations will require mechanisms to operate for long periods of time in environments which are adverse to most bearing lubricants, a series of tests is continuing to evaluate 29 grease type lubricants in R-4 size bearings in five different environments for a 1 year period. Four repetitions of each test are made to provide statistical samples. These tests have also been used to select four lubricants for 5 year tests in selected environments with five repetitions of each test for statistical samples. At the present time, 65 test sets have been completed and 23 test sets are underway. Two (5 year) tests have already been started in (1) continuous operation and (2) start-stop operation, with both in vacuum at ambient temperatures. To date, in the 1 year tests, the best results in all environments have been obtained with a high viscosity index perfluoroalkylpolyether grease. Mcmurtrey, E. L. Book Program 461 Reliability Materials Research and Application Evaluation of Bearing Materials and Lubricants for Space Environment

Download or read book Program 461 Reliability Materials Research and Application Evaluation of Bearing Materials and Lubricants for Space Environment written by LOCKHEED MISSILES AND SPACE CO INC SUNNYVALE CA. and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best operating lifetimes in a vacuum were achieved with oil and grease lubricants. Of the 37 tests conducted with 28 oils, double-shielded bearings with vacuum impregnated paper base phenolic retainers lubricated with 4 oils (one low-volatility petroleum base oil and 3 halo genated silicones) gave lifetimes of over 1 year. Of 13 greases evaluated in 16 tests, 4 greases, composed of silicone oils in shielded bearings showed lifetimes of over 1 year. On the basis of coast times, torque was abousame for oil lubricated bearings with phenolic retainers as for the grease-lubricated bearings with metal ribbon retainers. Of the total oil tests in a vacuum, 1 oil (Apiezon K) has achieved 18,297 hours of test time and is still running. Of the total grease tests in a vacuum, 1 grease (Aero shell-15) has achieved 13,364 hours and is still running. Of the 29 tests conducted, on different dry-film lubricants, 15 showed poor reproducibil ity and all had limited lifetimes under a 100% duty cycle. The maximum lifetime achieved was 2,213 hours. However, similar tests on the same material gave test times of 876, 245, 342, and 132 hours. Eight self- lubricating retainer materials were evaluated in 19 tests. Two poly tetrafluoroethylene compositions gave the best results: 5,000 and 3,000 hours. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US National Space Policy released by the president in 2006 states that the US government should "develop space professionals." As an integral part of that endeavor, "AU-18, Space Primer", provides to the joint war fighter an unclassified resource for understanding the capabilities, organizations, and operations of space forces. This primer is a useful tool both for individuals who are not "space aware"-unacquainted with space capabilities, organizations, and operations-and for those who are "space aware," especially individuals associated with the space community, but not familiar with space capabilities, organizations, and operations outside their particular areas of expertise. It is your guide and your invitation to all the excitement and opportunity of space. Last published in 1993, this updated version of the Space Primer has been made possible by combined efforts of the Air Command and Staff College's academic year 2008 "Jointspacemindedness" and "Operational Space" research seminars, as well as select members of the academic year 2009 "Advanced Space" research seminar. Book Materials and Processes

Download or read book Materials and Processes written by Barrie D. Dunn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-29 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to assist scientists and engineers select the ideal material or manufacturing process for particular applications; these could cover a wide range of fields, from light-weight structures to electronic hardware. The book will help in problem solving as it also presents more than 100 case studies and failure investigations from the space sector that can, by analogy, be applied to other industries. Difficult-to-find material data is included for reference. The sciences of metallic (primarily) and organic materials presented throughout the book demonstrate how they can be applied as an integral part of spacecraft product assurance schemes, which involve quality, material and processes evaluations, and the selection of mechanical and component parts. In this successor edition, which has been revised and updated, engineering problems associated with critical spacecraft hardware and the space environment are highlighted by over 500 illustrations including micrographs and fractographs. Space hardware captured by astronauts and returned to Earth from long durations in space are examined. Information detailed in the Handbook is applicable to general terrestrial applications including consumer electronics as well as high reliability systems associated with aeronautics, medical equipment and ground transportation. This Handbook is also directed to those involved in maximizing the relia bility of new materials and processes for space technology and space engineering. It will be invaluable to engineers concerned with the construction of advanced structures or mechanical and electronic sub-systems.
