Download or read book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Evaluation of Shipbuilding CAD CAM Systems Phase I written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the Phase I final report of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) project (Project Number 4-94-1) to evaluate world-class shipbuilders' existing CAD/CAM/CIM system implementations. Five U.S. shipyards participated in this study along with personnel from University of Michigan, Proteus Engineering, and Cybo Robots. Project participants have backgrounds in design, computer-aided design (CAD), manufacturing processes, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), production planning, and computer-integrated manufacturing/management (CIM). The results of this evaluation provided the basis for the CAD/CAM/CIM Workshop presented in conjunction with the 1996 Ship Production Symposium, and will be used as background in Phase II of the project to develop requirements for future shipbuilding CAD/CAM/CIM systems.

Book Evaluation of Shipbuilding CAD CAM CIM Systems Phase II Requirements for Future Systems

Download or read book Evaluation of Shipbuilding CAD CAM CIM Systems Phase II Requirements for Future Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phase II Report of NSRP project 4-94-1 documents an analysis of CAD/CAM/CIM in shipyards, ship-design software firms, and allied industries in Europe, Japan and the U.S. The purpose of the analysis was two fold: 1. To describe the requirements of a competitive, future-oriented computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing/computer-integrated management (CAD/CAMYCIM) system for shipbuilding and 2. To describe how shipyard business goals may be used as the basis for selecting requirements for a shipyard CAD/CAM/CIM system. In carrying out the analysis, the project team concluded that increased utilization of CAD/CAM/CIM is necessary in order for U.S. shipyards to become competitive worldwide. The technology is already wide ranging in world-class shipyards, spanning design, manufacturing and management. However, there are opportunities for U.S. yards not only to catch up with but to leapfrog, the competition. Numerous areas exist for innovation particularly in areas of integration. Indeed, one U.S. company has successfully developed a datacentric approach that has dramatically strengthened its business position in the world market. The team also concluded that European and Japanese shipyards have succeeded in part by recognizing that a shipyard's executive level management has a specific role to play in implementing CAD/CAM/CIM technology. The role requires becoming familiar with the capabilities of the technology, considering the technology when developing shipyard business strategies and working with technical management to translate business objectives into priorities for the selection and implementation of the most appropriate parts of the technology for each shipyard.

Book The National Shipbuilding Research Program 1997 Ship Production Symposium Paper Number 24 CAD CAM CIM Requirements for a World Class Commercial Shipyard

Download or read book The National Shipbuilding Research Program 1997 Ship Production Symposium Paper Number 24 CAD CAM CIM Requirements for a World Class Commercial Shipyard written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their ongoing reentry into the international shipbuilding market, U.S. shipyards are focusing on the strengths and potential of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing/computer-integrated manufacturing, or CAD/CAM/CIM. World-class commercial shipyards and software suppliers in Europe and Japan have advanced the state of the art of CAD/CAM/CIM and offer much for U.S. yards to learn. Indeed, they have proven generous in sharing their knowledge with the U.S., as evidenced during the conduct of the recent National Shipbuilding Research Program "Evaluate the Shipbuilding CAD/CAM Systems" Project. The primary goal of Phase I of the Project was to identify key features of CAD/CAM/CIM implementations at world-class shipyards that most significantly contribute to the success of those shipyards in commercial shipbuilding and deliver this information to U.S. shipyards. That goal has been accomplished and the results presented at a CAD/CAM/CIM workshop at the 1996 Ship Production Symposium. This paper reports on Phase II of the CAD/CAM/CIM project, which built upon the knowledge gained in Phase I. In Phase II, the Project Team developed a set of 70 technical requirements for a world-class ship design and production CAD/CAM/CIM system that is future-oriented. In addition, the Team described links between the technical side of shipbuilding and the business side, illustrating the business value of the technical requirements in particular and advanced CAD/CAM/CIM in general. It is hoped that the technical requirements and business links will provide U.S. yards with guide posts which will help those yards not only catch up with, but leapfrog, world-class technology and establish a competitive presence in the international shipbuilding market.

Book Technology and Science for the Ships of the Future

Download or read book Technology and Science for the Ships of the Future written by A. Marinò and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2018-06-22 with total page 1078 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974, a scientific conference covering marine automation group and large vessels issues was organized under the patronage of the Technical Naval Studies Centre (CETENA) and the Italian National Research Council (CNR). A later collaboration with the Marine Technical Association (ATENA) led to the renaming of the conference as NAV, extending the topics covered to the technical field previously covered by ATENA national conferences. The NAV conference is now held every 3 years, and attracts specialists from all over the world. This book presents the proceedings of NAV 2018, held in Trieste, Italy, in June 2018. The book contains 70 scientific papers, 35 technical papers and 16 reviews, and subjects covered include: comfort on board; conceptual and practical ship design; deep sea mining and marine robotics; protection of the environment; renewable marine energy; design and engineering of offshore vessels; digitalization, unmanned vehicles and cyber security; yacht and pleasure craft design and inland waterway vessels. With its comprehensive coverage of scientific and technical maritime issues, the book will be of interest to all those involved in this important industry.

Book Software Tools for Shipbuilding Productivity

Download or read book Software Tools for Shipbuilding Productivity written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this study are to define and identify software tools, and to impart to the shipbuilding community the knowledge to use them to aid in the design/production integration of the shipbuilding process. The approach taken in this study has been to: o Research, review and define the CAD/CAM integration process o Develop selected scenarios of modern CAD/CAM integration methods o Isolate and research software aspects of CAD/CAM scenarios; select and list application areas for software tools to (potentially) increase productivity for the integration process defined o On-site visits to shipyards to review prepared CAD/CAM scenarios and software tools to define applicability of technologies, need for changes and knowledge-level of potential users o Collect, reduce and review data from on-site visits o Create a scenario adapted to the real-world of shipbuilding; identify critical software needs and select useful software tools o Select a shipbuilding scenario and determine software needs to actually generate the integrated system; outline a means to calculate potential savings through the use of software tools. The material presented is ordered as outlined, and is followed by a catalog of software tools, and a recommended means of distributing results to the shipbuilding community. A glossary of acronyms is also included. There is no attempt made to specify currently in use, or projected hardware/software systems in either the computer, or approximately performed by separately. CAD/CAM device arena. This task has been undertaken in the same timeframe as this study by the CAD/CAM Survey Study the Chicago-based IIT Research Institute which is reported separately.
