This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Highway Innovative Technology Evaluation Center (HITEC), a CERF/IIEC Innovation Center This report describes a HITEC evaluation designed to determine the basic capabilites and limitations of the Geo-Con VERT Wall for use as a technically viable permanent excavation support retaining wall system. The evaluation was conducted based on design, construction, performance, and quality assurance information outlined in the HITEC Protocol. The Geo-Con VERT Wall System is an in-situ retaining wall system intended as an alternative to other types of cut walls such as soldier pile and anchored retaining walls. Geo-Con VERT Wall System is comprised of: deep soil mix columns consisting of overlapping or tangent soil-cement columns along the front face backed up by tangent rows of overlapping soil-cement columns; a soil-cement relieving platform overtop the columns; steel beams embedded in the front face soil-cement columns for support of the permanent facing; and permanent facing consisting of precast, reinforced concrete panels or reinforced cast-in-place concrete. The relieving platform is intended to provide internal stability by typing the soil-mix columns together and transferring the load to the bottom of the columns.

Download or read book Evaluation of Prefabricated Edge Drains PED in Ohio written by Andrew G. Heydinger and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to evaluate prefabricated edge drain (PED) construction procedures and to assess the condition of PEDs installed in Ohio between 1988 and 1993. The research included a survey of department of transportation engineers in other states and Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) design and construction engineers. The condition of PEDs installed in Ohio was evaluated at six sites throughout Ohio by excavating short sections of PEDs for visual inspections and permittivity testing. A video borescope with a 25-ft (7.6-m) long fiber optic cable was used to investigate the in situ condition of the PED. Permittivity testing of the PED fabric was conducted in the field on PED samples removed from the excavations. Specifications for installing PED vary considerably among the states using PED. ODOT current specifications require placing the PED on the outside of the trench and using a granular backfill. Problems that have been reported include deformation of the PED core, compression of the filter fabric into the core, blinding and clogging of the filter, sedimentation of the core and blockage of drainage outlets. In most cases, the problems were considered minor. The problems cited above were observed at all six sites during the video borescope inspections. In spite of problems with the filter fabric, the permittivity of the filter fabric was not significantly reduced. The problems with PED result in reduced drainage capacity. However, the PEDs are effective in providing drainage provided the drainage outlets are not blocked. Construction specifications should be observed to minimize problems. Maintenance personnel should inspect drainage outlets on a regular basis to ensure that the outlets are not blocked.

Download or read book Protocols to Assess the Breakdown of Flushable Consumer Products written by Drew C. McAvoy and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2003-07-31 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scientifically sound approach is needed to ensure that flushable consumer products are compatible with household plumbing fixtures, as well as wastewater collection and treatment systems. In addition to assessing disposal system compatibility, an assessment approach should also ensure that flushable consumer products do not become an aesthetic nuisance in surface waters and soil environments. This document presents an overall approach for assessing the fate and compatibility of consumer products in wastewater disposal systems. While the focus of this document is on the United States, it is believed that the conceptual approach and many of the test methods could be used to assess the compatibility of flushable consumer products in wastewater disposal systems throughout the world.
