Book Evaluation of Night Vision Devices for Image Fusion Studies

Download or read book Evaluation of Night Vision Devices for Image Fusion Studies written by Cheng W. Kiang and published by . This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Night Vision Devices (NVD) using Image Intensification (II) technology are among the most important sensors used by ground troops and aviators in night operations for modern combat. With the intensified images from these devices, soldiers can see an enemy's movement better and further in darkness. This thesis explores different test methods in evaluating the performances and sensitivities of several NVDs for future image fusion studies. Specification data such as sensitivity, resolution (Modulation Transfer Function) and pixel size are obtained. Comparative analyses of the collected results are made to characterize the performances of the different NVDs. A new method using MATLAB programming to objectively analyze digitized images for characterization of II based NVDs is proposed. This test method can also be extended to the evaluation of Thermal Imaging (TI) systems for comparative analysis with II NVDs. In addition, the feasibility of testing NVDs using both II and TI technologies, with common operating conditions and target boards is discussed. Finally, the potential of using these digitized images for image fusion studies is verified with the test and evaluation results.

Book Fusion of Night Vision and Thermal Images

Download or read book Fusion of Night Vision and Thermal Images written by Tiong Tien Neo and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Night vision and thermal images are extensively used in military operations, as they help in mission planning and executions tasks. Image fusion effectively combines information present in each type of image. This research explored two wavelet-based image fusion approaches for night vision and thermal images; namely wavelet transform fusion and region-based fusion. Morphological methods designed to improve the image segmentation step were considered to improve image contrast and a global image quality index was applied to investigate the information content improvement resulting form the fusion process. Finally, a MATLAB-based graphical user interface was designed to assist the user in evaluating the benefits of the fusion process. Results showed the selection process is able to narrow to the best fused image with a satisfactory accuracy.

Book An Assessment of the Impact of Fused Monochrome and Fused Color Night Vision Displays on Reaction Time and Accuracy in Target Detection

Download or read book An Assessment of the Impact of Fused Monochrome and Fused Color Night Vision Displays on Reaction Time and Accuracy in Target Detection written by Matthew Thomas Sampson and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Night Vision Devices (NVDs) employed by the military fall into two categories: Image Intensifiers (I²) also known as Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) and Infrared (IR). Each sensor provides unique visual information not available to the unaided human visual system. However, these devices have limitations and they have been listed as a causal factor in many crashes of military aircraft at night. Researches hypothesize that digitally fusing that output from these sensors into one image and then artificially coloring the image will improve an NVD user's visual performance. The purpose of this thesis was to determine if fusion and coloring of static, natural NVG and IR imagery will improve reaction time and accuracy in target detection.

Book Evaluation of Visual Acuity with Gen 3 Night Vision Goggles

Download or read book Evaluation of Visual Acuity with Gen 3 Night Vision Goggles written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using laboratory simulations, visual performance was measured at luminance and night vision imaging system (NVIS) radiance levels typically encountered in the natural nocturnal environment. Comparisons were made between visual performance with unaided vision and that observed with subjects using image intensification. An Amplified Night Vision Imaging System (ANVIS6) binocular image intensifier was used. Light levels available in the experiments (using video display technology and filters) were matched to those of reflecting objects illuminated by representative night-sky conditions (e.g., full moon, starlight). Results show that as expected, the precipitous decline in foveal acuity experienced with decreasing mesopic luminance levels is effectively shifted to much lower light levels by use of an image intensification system. The benefits of intensification are most pronounced foveally, but still observable at 20 deg eccentricity. Binocularity provides a small improvement in visual acuity under both intensified and unintensified conditions. Bradley, Arthur and Kaiser, Mary K. Ames Research Center ...

Book Evaluation of Night Vision Goggles for Maritime Search and Rescue Volume 2 Data Appendix

Download or read book Evaluation of Night Vision Goggles for Maritime Search and Rescue Volume 2 Data Appendix written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three experiments were conducted during 1989 by the U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development (R & D) Center to evaluate night vision goggles (NVGs) for their effectiveness in detecting small targets at night. Three types of NVGs were evaluated: the AN/AVS-6 Aviators Night Vision Imaging System (ANVIS) NVG was tested onboard Coast Guard HH-3 and Ch-3 helicopters, and the AN/PVS-5C and AN/PVS-7A NVGs were tested onboard 41-foot Coast Guard utility boats (STBs). Simulated persons in the water (PIWs), 4- and 6-person life rafts, 18- and 21- foot white boats, and white, personal flotation device (PFD) strobe lights were employed as targets during realistically-simulated search missions. A total of 1,490 target detection opportunities were generated during the experiments. These data were analyzed to determine which of 25 search parameters of interest exerted a statistically-significant influence on target detection probability. (JS).

Book Feasibility of Using the AN PVS 14 Monocular Night Vision Device for Pilotage

Download or read book Feasibility of Using the AN PVS 14 Monocular Night Vision Device for Pilotage written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The AN/PVS-14 Monocular Night Vision Device (MNVD) high performance image' intensification system was designed for ground. use. During a USAARL optical and visual evaluation of the MNVD, the authors noted that the user could fuse the intensified image with the unaided or nondisplay viewing eye. The fused images from the right and left eyes provided some color and depth perception under certain night lighting conditions and allowed the unaided eye to remain dark adapted. This assessment explored the potential use of the MNVD for pilotage using two experienced night vision goggle (NVG) UH-60 pilots and two experienced AH-64 pilots, who also used the helmet display unit (HDU) with symbology and thermal imagery.
