Book Evaluation of Fatigue Crack Thresholds Using Various Experimental Methods

Download or read book Evaluation of Fatigue Crack Thresholds Using Various Experimental Methods written by JC. Newman and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accurate representation of fatigue crack threshold, the region defining crack growth as either very slow or nonexistent, is extremely important. If the experimentally measured threshold is unconservatively high, a structural component designed with this data may fail long before the fatigue analysis predicts. The fatigue crack growth threshold is experimentally defined using ASTM standard E 647, which has been shown to exhibit anomalies. Alternate test methods have been proposed, such as the constant Kmax test procedure, to define the threshold regime without ambiguity. However, only the current test method defined by ASTM is designed to produce the range of fatigue crack thresholds (e.g., low and high R) needed to characterize an acrospace loading environment. It is the scope of this paper to determine the fatigue crack growth threshold of a well characterized aerospace alloy, 7075-T7351 aluminum, using different methods, to compare the results, and to draw conclusions.

Book Fatigue Crack Growth in Rubber Materials

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth in Rubber Materials written by Gert Heinrich and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book summarizes recent international research and experimental developments regarding fatigue crack growth investigations of rubber materials. It shows the progress in fundamental as well as advanced research of fracture investigation of rubber material under fatigue loading conditions, especially from the experimental point of view. However, some chapters will describe the progress in numerical modeling and physical description of fracture mechanics and cavitation phenomena in rubbers. Initiation and propagation of cracks in rubber materials are dominant phenomena which determine the lifetime of these soft rubber materials and, as a consequence, the lifetime of the corresponding final rubber parts in various fields of application. Recently, these phenomena became of great scientific interest due to the development of new experimental methods, concepts and models. Furthermore, crack phenomena have an extraordinary impact on rubber wear and abrasion of automotive tires; and understanding of crack initiation and growth in rubbers will help to support the growthing number of activities and worldwide efforts of reduction of tire wear losses and abrasion based emissions.

Book Fatigue Crack Closure at Near Threshold Growth Rates in Steels Effects of Microstructure Load Sequence and Environment

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Closure at Near Threshold Growth Rates in Steels Effects of Microstructure Load Sequence and Environment written by Michael K. Schaper and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper summarizes long-term research on fatigue crack closure in several labs of the author. Various experimental techniques were used in different combinations. Primarily, a sophisticated dynamic compliance technique based on highly sensitive resonance vibration measurements and crack tip diffracted ultrasonic wave analysis is applied. Whereas the first method reflects the global through thickness behavior, the second method enables spatial resolution, which is achieved with a reduction of sensitivity yet has the advantage that the signal generation is independent on the stress state ahead of the crack tip. The results allow a coherent view into the effects of the stress state, material plasticity, fracture surface roughness, and oxidation tendency on the closure behavior and, therefore, on both the threshold stress intensity and near-threshold crack propagation. Specifically, the different load ratio, load sequence, and the environmental effects on the threshold values of ferritic, martensitic, and austenitic steels are addressed.
