Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The City of Winnipeg Water and Waste Department presently operates and maintains 70 Stormwater Retention Basins (SRB's) within its boundaries. Limitations on the number of harvestable basins exist due to time, availability of equipment, site conditions at some stormwater retention basins, and budget. These problems, in addition to the rapid proliferation of weed and algae concentrations observed subsequent to harvesting, resulted in questions with respect to the impact mechanical harvesting has upon chlorophyll a concentrations in SRB's. Water quality analysis indicated that subsequent to harvesting activities, no reduction in chlorophyll a concentration was observed in any of the test basins, despite the removal of aquatic vegetation during harvesting. Plausible explanations for the increase in chlorophyll a following harvesting were discussed and investigated. Historically, harvesting activities had been supported with the application of copper sulphate and simazine based sterilents until the recent ban of these products from SRB application necessitated research into alternatives. Review of alternative emerging weed and algae control methods indicated that the most promising methods available to supplement o replace the aquatic weed harvesting program included sterilized grass carp and the use of the commercially available herbicides Reglone A and Karmex DF. Investigation into the effectiveness of the herbicides Karmex DF and Reglone A indicated that both provided promise as competitive means for weed and algae control, and either could prove to be an important supplement to, or a replacement for, conventional harvesting practices. Book A Quantitative and Qualitative Assessment of Stormwater Retention Basisns Relationships in Nature and Response to Three Aquatic Weed Control Methods

Download or read book A Quantitative and Qualitative Assessment of Stormwater Retention Basisns Relationships in Nature and Response to Three Aquatic Weed Control Methods written by Sarah Catherine Wakelin and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intensive water quality study was carried out for 5 months during the summer of 1998 on 58 stormwater retention basins (SRBs) in the City of Winnipeg. The basins' primary function is to serve as land drainage storage reservoirs within the city; however, developers advertise them as pristine 'lakes' to residents in sub-developments. Due to the nature of the ponds, they quickly become choked with vegetation, which disenchants many property owners. Since a large-scale study had not been completed in the past it was desirable to compose a large database of water quality values with which to make comparisons between the SRBs' overall characteristics. The City of Winnipeg has implemented a series of control measures in order to help alleviate customer dissatisfaction by removing vegetation using the herbicides Karmex-DF and Reglone-A, as well as a mechanical weed harvester. An assessment as to the best method of control was also desired. In order to gauge the water quality pertaining to these objectives, waterquality was assessed on 10 occasions, bi-weekly, from May to September 1998. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book A Guide for Best Management Practice BMP Selection in Urban Developed Areas

Download or read book A Guide for Best Management Practice BMP Selection in Urban Developed Areas written by Task Committee for Evaluating Best Management Practices and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide examines permanent structural techniques, or Best Management Practices (BMPs), which can be used for retrofitting the stormwater management systems in existing developed areas. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are explained to help engineering professionals select the BMP (or series of BMPs) best suited for removing pollutants from stormwater runoff at a particular location. The design factors considered include land availability, type of pollutant to be removed, groundwater levels, soil types, BMP costs, maintenance costs, and desired pollutant removal efficiency. The BMPs evaluated are ponds, alum treatment systems, constructed wetlands, sand filters, baffle boxes, inlet devices, vegetated swales, buffer strips, and infiltration/exfiltration trenches. A BMP Selection Guide, in an easy-to-use matrix format, aids in the decision-making process for BMP selections. Five design factors and five pollutant types (total suspended solids, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, heavy metals, and floating trash) are evaluated for each BMP in the matrix. BMPs presented in this guide were chosen based upon common availability, ease of maintenance, and an established track record.

Book Effects of Vegetation Management Strategies on the Establishment of Submersed Aquatic Vegetation in Cell 5B of Stormwater Treatment Area 1 West STA 1W

Download or read book Effects of Vegetation Management Strategies on the Establishment of Submersed Aquatic Vegetation in Cell 5B of Stormwater Treatment Area 1 West STA 1W written by Hongjun Chen and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monitoring study was conducted in STA-1W Cell 5B to evaluate effects of four vegetation management strategies on the reestablishment of submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) at different sites with rice (Oryza sativa), sprangletop grass (Leptochloa fascicularis), barnyard grass (Echinochloa sp.), or miscellaneous plant species dominated. These vegetation management strategies include (A) grass detritus left undisturbed, (B) grass detritus removed to allow reestablishment of SAV from the sediment seedbank, (C) grass detritus left undisturbed and healthy SAV transplanted directly on top of the detritus, and (D) grass detritus removed and healthy SAV transplanted directly into the empty water column. The study was conducted from November 2006 to December 2007. It should be noted that during this time period the STAs, including this cell, suffered from a two-year drought period. This could have affected the outcome of this experiment. Primary findings from this study are: 1) Hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata) and Coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum) showed increased coverage from April to December in 2007. In contrast, Chara (Chara spp.) coverage did not significantly change during the period of the study. 2) Vegetation management strategies significantly affected Coontail areal coverage in stations with different vegetation types. Coontail coverage in harvested stations was higher that in stations with transplanting SAV alone. 3) Vegetation management strategies did not influence Naiad (Najas guadalupensis) or Hydrilla coverage but significantly affected Chara coverage. The combination of harvesting and transplanting SAV improved Chara establishment. 4) Rice-dominated stations generally had higher Coontail coverage than sprangletop and barnyard grass-dominated stations.
