Book School Violence

Download or read book School Violence written by Rita Cantrell Schellenberg and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies and statistical reports have revealed school violence as an issue of ongoing concern. Research has identified the media, early parent child interactions, and peer interactions as primary socializing agents in the development of aggression. Middle childhood, the elementary school years, has been identified as a key period of concern for the development of aggression and engaging in acts of violence. Studies have identified school-based peer mediation and conflict resolution programs, particularly those that incorporate cognitive behavioral approaches grounded in social learning theory, as tools for combating school violence. Peer mediation programs teach positive peer interactions and social skills to students who, in turn, model those behaviors which are internalized by other students who begin to accept the standards and values of the program within the school community (i.e., social learning). Educators, specifically school counselors, are being called upon to create, implement, and conduct internal evaluations of school-based mediation and conflict resolution programs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the Peace Pal peer mediation program implemented in September 2000 at an elementary school in Tidewater, Virginia. This outcome-oriented objectives-based internal program evaluation utilizes a quantitative and qualitative mixed-method quasi-experimental approach to assess program effectiveness in five domains: (a) frequency of out of school suspensions, (b) knowledge pertaining to conflict, conflict resolution, and mediation, (c) success of conflict resolution in peer mediation sessions, (d) participant perceptions of mediation session value, and (e) mediator perceptions of program value. Results of the study indicate the Peace Pal program is effective in reducing school-wide violence, increases Peace Pal knowledge pertaining to mediation and conflict resolution, experiences successful conflict resolve during mediation ...

Book Mediation Works

  • Author : Jacqueline Yvonne Cook
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 24 pages

Download or read book Mediation Works written by Jacqueline Yvonne Cook and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature review was conducted to understand how mediators and faculty view a Peer Mediation Program (PMP). The review identified four subgroups: mediators, teachers, administrators, and school counselors as well as their views on the success or lack of success of PMPs. The research also reflects how to best engage stakeholders in the mediation process. PMPs serve as avenues for students to take an active role in creating a better academic climate for schools. Utilizing a mixed method analysis mediators and faculty were surveyed, using a 5-point likert-scale developed by the researcher. Mediators further evaluated their impact by taking the Self-Evaluation Inventory developed by Scrhrumpf, Crawford, and Usadel (1997). A focus group with mediators was conducted to understand student perceptions of their impact. This action research is limited to a high school in the south with the goal of making the program more effective.

Book Peer Mediation

    Book Details:

  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Peer Mediation written by Judith M. Ferrara and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than ten years peer mediation programs have been springing up in schools. Although they are begun with the highest hopes and best intentions, many programs falter in their second or third year, then disappear. What makes a program effective enough to endure year after year and become part of a school's culture? Peer Mediation is the story of how one successful program started in an urban elementary school-how it was designed, implemented, and maintained. Teacher and mediator Judith Ferrara explains mediation, what it means to start up a program, watch it grow, change, and endure. At the heart of this book are the voices of the students who volunteered to become peer mediators, learned to understand the mediation process, and worked to help shape the program. Their thoughts and reactions to the peer mediation program, their tenacity, and, above all, their ethic of caring will leave a strong impression. Peer Mediation demonstrates the need to listen to students, observe their responses to the program, and work with them to revise it in order to maintain it. Peer Mediation includes:strategies that may be used to implement and maintain a peer mediation program;vignettes in each chapter selected and interpreted to demonstrate what it can mean to adults and students who are part of a peer mediation program;suggestions for handling the problems that arise and changes that occur when peer mediation programs "start up";forms, checklists, and standards for preparing and assessing peer mediation programs;an annotated bibliography of mediation theory and practice, conflict resolution curriculum, and program materials.Because Peer Mediation follows one program from implementation through its third year, it will be a useful resource for guidance counselors, teachers, and administrators who wish to start up a program, or gain insight into how to maintain an existing one.

Book Effect of a Peer Mediation Program on Short term Suspensions

Download or read book Effect of a Peer Mediation Program on Short term Suspensions written by Alison R. Sharp and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: "Peer mediation has been proposed as a means to reduce violence within our schools and improve conflict resolution skills. In this study, peer mediation's effect on short-term suspensions for fighting, both aggregate and individual, was examined. Qualitative data was gathered from student mediators in one school to assess their views of and experiences with mediation. Records kept by two mediation programs were analyzed as well. The number of short-term suspensions for fighting in four urban middle schools was analyzed for 62 middle school students given short-term suspensions for fighting and subsequently mediated within the 1996-97 school year. Significant reductions in overall short-term suspension rates were found for three of the four schools. Using a paired t-test, no significant effect for mediation was found for individual short-term suspensions."
