  • Pages : 24 pages

Download or read book Mediation Works written by Jacqueline Yvonne Cook and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature review was conducted to understand how mediators and faculty view a Peer Mediation Program (PMP). The review identified four subgroups: mediators, teachers, administrators, and school counselors as well as their views on the success or lack of success of PMPs. The research also reflects how to best engage stakeholders in the mediation process. PMPs serve as avenues for students to take an active role in creating a better academic climate for schools. Utilizing a mixed method analysis mediators and faculty were surveyed, using a 5-point likert-scale developed by the researcher. Mediators further evaluated their impact by taking the Self-Evaluation Inventory developed by Scrhrumpf, Crawford, and Usadel (1997). A focus group with mediators was conducted to understand student perceptions of their impact. This action research is limited to a high school in the south with the goal of making the program more effective.

Book Effect of a Peer Mediation Program on Short term Suspensions

Download or read book Effect of a Peer Mediation Program on Short term Suspensions written by Alison R. Sharp and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: "Peer mediation has been proposed as a means to reduce violence within our schools and improve conflict resolution skills. In this study, peer mediation's effect on short-term suspensions for fighting, both aggregate and individual, was examined. Qualitative data was gathered from student mediators in one school to assess their views of and experiences with mediation. Records kept by two mediation programs were analyzed as well. The number of short-term suspensions for fighting in four urban middle schools was analyzed for 62 middle school students given short-term suspensions for fighting and subsequently mediated within the 1996-97 school year. Significant reductions in overall short-term suspension rates were found for three of the four schools. Using a paired t-test, no significant effect for mediation was found for individual short-term suspensions."

This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is a must for those who, like me, believe passionately both in the power of peer mediation...and in the urgency of spreading good practice in a society like ours, which is desperately searching for ways to be inclusive and at peace with itself.†Tim Brighouse, former Commissioner for London Schools “As the challenges facing young people grow so do the array of support mechanisms to help them. During my time as a Member of Parliament and as a Minister I saw many of the ideas and initiatives which were tackling this issue. I am attracted to the idea of peer mediation mainly because it goes beyond the question of how can we protect and help children when they have a difficulty, and develops those increasingly important social and emotional skills in all children†Estelle Morris, Former Secretary of State, DfES Why use peer mediation? What are the factors that influence its failure or success? Peer mediation as a form of conflict resolution is growing in popularity and usage, particularly within education. The number of schools using this method has increased, with many schools in the UK now using mediation to settle disputes both in school, and in the wider community. Based on the author’s extensive work on peer mediation, the book provides a thorough account of theory and practice relating to an approach that can enable young people to resolve their own disputes – and those of their peers. The author shows how peer mediation can be embraced by schools to strengthen student voice, behaviour management, active citizenship and inclusion, as well as how it can be neglected and fail to achieve these aims. Drawing on case studies of peer mediation in schools, the book offers an analysis of the work that has been carried out in this area. It revisits key debates in education such as citizenship, social inclusion, student voice and behaviour management in order to begin to address the questions surrounding this method of conflict resolution. Peer Mediationis key reading for primary and secondary school teachers, educational professionals, academics, policy-makers and those with an interest in practical peace making.

Book An Evaluation of the Effects of Conflict Resolution Training on the Attitudes and Behavior of Sixth grade Students at a Public Urban Middle School

Download or read book An Evaluation of the Effects of Conflict Resolution Training on the Attitudes and Behavior of Sixth grade Students at a Public Urban Middle School written by Eric Benjamin Holmes and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the effects that peer mediation/conflict resolution training has on the behavior, attitudes and problem solving strategies of sixth grade urban students. The participants were randomly drawn from the middle school population of the City of York, Pennsylvania. An experimental pretest post-test design was used to conduct the investigation. Information used to measure the dependent variables was gathered from a Likert scale questionnaire and from district discipline records. The data were analyzed using an analysis of variance and chi square procedure. The effect of peer mediation/conflict resolution training on behavior was significant. The control group had more incidents of anti-social behavior than the experimental group. Additionally, a significant effect was found regarding attitudes. The experimental group was found to demonstrate more pro-social attitudes than the control group. Training also had a significant effect on problem solving skills. The experimental group scores indicated greater use of pro-social behavioral skills in solving conflicts than the control group. Results from the data provide information that can enable administrators to address discipline concerns arising from naturally occurring conflict. -- Abstract.
