Book The European Union and the Cyprus Conflict

Download or read book The European Union and the Cyprus Conflict written by Thomas Diez and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the lead essay for this volume, Joshua Foa Dienstag engages in a critical encounter with the work of Stanley Cavell on cinema, focusing skeptical attention on the claims made for the contribution of cinema to the ethical character of democratic life. In this debate, Dienstag mirrors the celebrated dialogue between Rousseau and Jean D'Alembert on theatre, casting Cavell as D'Alembert in his view that we can learn to become better citizens and better people by observing a staged representation of human life, with Dienstag arguing, with Rousseau, that this misunderstands the relationship between original and copy, even more so in the medium of film than in the medium of theatre. Dienstag's provocative and stylish essay is debated by an exceptional group of interlocutors comprising Clare Woodford, Tracy B. Strong, Margaret Kohn, Davide Panagia and Thomas Dumm. The volume closes with a robust response from Dienstag to his critics.

Book Embracing Cyprus

Download or read book Embracing Cyprus written by Pauline Green and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2003-03-28 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Archbishop Makarios was toppled as President of Cyprus in a 1974 coup, and Turkish forces invaded the island, few saw Cyprus as part of the incipient drive to create a new Europe. Yet, as Pauline Green reveals here, behind the rhetoric of the politicians there is a growing view among Greek and Turkish Cypriots that the solution to Cyprus' problems lies within the gift of Europe. And yet the problems remain knotty - not least because of the highly sensitive and little-discussed role of the British military bases on the island, whose security and intelligence-gathering functions are so crucial to UK and US interests in the region. The author's analysis should interest those concerned not only with the future of Cyprus, Turkey and the Eastern Mediterranean, but also with the fate of the European Union itself.

Book Contemporary Social and Political Aspects of the Cyprus Problem

Download or read book Contemporary Social and Political Aspects of the Cyprus Problem written by Michalis Kontos and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's world, the issue of Cyprus is notable for all the wrong reasons: because of the duration of the divisions in Cyprus itself between Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots (formalized since 1983 by a disputed international border across the island); because of the involvement of Greece and Turkey, for which the "hyphenated" Cypriot communities form proxy battalions; and because of the failure of the United Nations' longstanding efforts to resolve the conflict. Much of the discussion in the book revolves around the difficulty of producing viable constitutional and civic arrangements in an.

Book The Europeanisation of Contested Statehood

Download or read book The Europeanisation of Contested Statehood written by George Kyris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Europeanisation of Contested Statehood: The EU in northern Cyprus acts as a case study of the impact of the EU on institutions, political parties and civil society in 'contested states', self-declared states which remain unrecognised in world politics. Research drawn from qualitative analysis of official documents, public discourse and interviews with various officials and political and social elites within the EU and at a local level provides new insights as to the impact of the EU on northern Cyprus as well as a fresh understanding of the relevance of the EU to contested states in general. By doing so, the book reflects on what contested statehood means for Europeanisation and lays out a conceptual template for the study of contested states of the wider European periphery, such as those in the Caucasus, Transnistria, Kosovo or the occupied Palestinian territories, which continue to represent specific challenges to the international affairs of the EU.

  • Author : Michael Moran (Expert on Cyprus)
  • Publisher : GPoT
  • Release : 2010

Download or read book Cyprus A European Anomaly written by Michael Moran (Expert on Cyprus) and published by GPoT. This book was released on 2010 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have published most of the items in this booklet before. Denktaş's speech before the United Nations (UN) Security Council in 1964 was included in my edition of Rauf Denktash at the United Nations: Speeches on Cyprus (The Eothen Press, Huntingdon, 1997); and except for a few small changes, my opening essay here differs little from the first chapter of my book Sovereignty Divided: Essays on the International Dimensions of the Cyprus Problem (CYREP, Nicosia, 1998; third enlarged imprint, 1999). These earlier works are now out of print and will probably remain so. But given the current stage of the seemingly interminable negotiations for a settlement in Cyprus, I thought it might be useful to make certain items available once more for the benefit of those diplomats, government officials, European Union (EU) parliamentarians, academics, journalists and other persons interested in Cyprus, many of whom may have only recently become concerned with the extraordinary intractable problems of the 'divided island.' More especially, this booklet should help those who are tempted to accept a largely Greek account of what is at stake in Cyprus to realise that such a one-sided conception will never lead to the just, equitable and permanent reconciliation between the two Cypriot communities that the international community has been seeking for so long.

Book The Europeanization of Cyprus

Download or read book The Europeanization of Cyprus written by A. Sepos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-10-08 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from rationalist and constructivist approaches The Europeanization of Cyprus identifies mechanisms and processes of Europeanization and examines their impact on the following key dimensions of Cyprus: executive, legislative and judicial authorities; political parties and public opinion; economy; agriculture and regional policy; foreign policy; and justice and home affairs. It also assesses how the territorial and temporal dimensions of the country have mediated the impact of these mechanisms and processes, and ultimately shaped the country's Europeanization experience. The book provides a deep understanding of the relations between Cyprus and the EU, while also enhancing our theoretical understanding of the impact of Europeanization on states, whether inside or outside the EU.
