Book Conservation of Endangered Freshwater Fish in Europe

Download or read book Conservation of Endangered Freshwater Fish in Europe written by Arthur Kirchhofer and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two events have recently improved the prospects of protecting fish and their environment in Switzerland: the acceptance of a new Federal Water Protection Law in the plebiscite of May 17th 1992, and the new Federal Legislation on Fisheries, in force since January 1st 1994. With this legal framework, the possibilities for protection of nature and landscape have now considerably improved in Switzerland. The most important aims of the Federal Law on Water Protection are to safeguard the natural habitats of the native flora and fauna and water as the habitat of aquatic organisms. This includes not only the preservation or restoration of water quality in lakes and rivers, but also, in rivers used for hydroelectricity, irrigation or as industrial or other water supplies, the maintenance of sufficient water to fulfill the minimal requirements for fish. However, good quality water in sufficient quan tities alone is not enough to guarantee the survival of fish. Intact fish habitats comprise various phYsical structures including plenty of hiding places, hunting grounds, reproduction and nursery areas within suitable distances from each other. This third aspect of conservation and restoration of aquatic habitats is a central point in the new Federal Law on Fisheries. Whereas the former versions of this law were more concerned with fishery regulations, the recent legislation defines new areas of responsibility for the federal and the cantonal governments.

Book The Freshwater Fishes of Suriname

Download or read book The Freshwater Fishes of Suriname written by Jan H.A. Mol and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-09-19 with total page 899 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With some 480 currently known fresh- and brackish-water fish species, Suriname has a rich inland fish fauna that is related to the most diverse freshwater fish fauna on planet Earth, i.e. that of the Amazon River. Interest in the freshwater fishes of Suriname by naturalists and scientists extends back over more than two centuries. Suriname is undoubtedly the site of origin of the oldest extant preserved specimens of South American fishes and 19 Surinamese fish species were described and figured by Linnaeus. Building on ichthyological studies initiated in the 1960s by the Brokopondo Project, this book provides an introduction to the freshwater fish fauna of Suriname, including identification keys, photographs of the species and descriptions of their habitats, that should be especially useful to decision makers, conservation biologists, aquarium hobbyists and eco-tourists.

Working Party on Water Quality Criteria for European Freshwater Fish and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1983 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, prepared by the European Inland Fisheries Research Advisory Commission Working Party on Water Quality Criteria for European Freshwater Fish, critically reviews the literature on the occurrence and effects of chromium in fresh water. It lists and discusses the sources of chromium, and its chemistry and analysis in fresh water. The mode of action of chromium and the factors which affect its short- and long-term toxicity to the various life-cycle stages of fish are dealt with in detail. Similar information for plants and invertebrates is considered and evidence for the accumulation of the metal in animals is reviewed. The tentative water-quality criteria proposed distinguish between salmonid and non-salmonid waters but, in order to protect sensitive species of invertebrates, it is recommended that criteria for salmonid waters should be used to cover the majority of waters. The conditions under which more or less stringent standards may be appropriate are indicated. To protect salmonid waters, the mean aqueous concentration of ̀soluble' chromium should not exceed 0.025 mg Cr/l and the 95 percentile should not exceed 0.1 mg Cr/l.

Book Water Quality Criteria for Freshwater Fish

Download or read book Water Quality Criteria for Freshwater Fish written by J S Alabaster and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Quality Criteria for Freshwater Fish, Second Edition, is a collection of 12 technical papers on water quality criteria for European freshwater fish, together with a report on fish toxicity testing procedures that have been produced for the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission (EIFAC)—an intergovernmental organization with a current membership of 24 countries. Each chapter reviews a particular water quality characteristic for European inland fisheries, although the effects of mixtures with other harmful substances have been described for some of them. These characteristics include water quality criteria for finely suspended solids and pH values; water temperature; the effect of ammonia; phenolic wastes; dissolved oxygen; chemistry and toxicology of chlorine; and toxicity of zinc, copper, and cadmium. The reports in this volume will be useful not only to the member countries of the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission, but also to those concerned with the management of inland waters and their fishery resources in other continents.
