Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the times of ancient European civilizations, overseas exploration and trade have been an important part of European life and culture. This book tells of the greatest voyages and discoveries - from the Viking Age to the 20th century - in a traditional story-based format. Kids love stories. They may forget the dates and the names of wars and treaties, but they remember the turns and twists of events, the adventures and misadventures of colorful historical figures. The goal of this book is to restore the excitement about history that many kids lose as they drown in the economic and social analysis and criticism that have nearly ousted history from many social studies programs. The historical figures featured in this book are famous for the actual discoveries they made. I did not include the stories of conquerors and adventurers like the Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors famous for conquest rather than exploration. To create a narrative that reads like a sequence of stories, I studied 19th- and early 20th-century story-based history books for kids, and went back to the actual letters, journals, and books written by the famous explorers. Among them are letters of Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci, journals of Captain Cook and Antonio Pigafetta who traveled with Magellan, and books by Marco Polo and Dr. Livingstone. These documents allow my characters to participate in telling their stories using their own words and their own point of view. Here is the list of the historical figures featured in this book: Erik the Red, Leif Eriksson, Marco Polo, Prince Henry the Navigator, Diego Cam, Bartholomeu Dias, Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, Vitus Bering, James Cook, David Livingstone, Roald Amundsen.

Astounding photographs and journal entries, sidebars on the Inuit and polar animals, and engaging activities bring the harrowing expeditions to life. Activities include making a Viking compass, building a model igloo, making a cross staff to measure latitude, creating a barometer, making pemmican, and writing a newspaper like William Parry's &“Winter Chronicle.&” The North and South Poles become exciting routes to learning about science, geography, and history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land ho! Discover what the Age of Exploration was all about in this wonderful addition to the bestselling Who HQ series! Before the fifteenth century, European sailors were unsure what waited for them beyond their well-known travel routes around the Mediterranean Sea, so they kept within sight of land. But all of that changed after Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal started sending ships down the coast in the hope of finding a sea route to India and Africa. This was the beginning of a giant leap toward understanding what the globe actually looked like. Certain European nations grew rich and powerful from the New World gold and lands they claimed, while advanced, long-standing civilizations like the Aztecs and Incas were destroyed in the cruelest of ways. Book The Voyages of Jacques Cartier

Download or read book The Voyages of Jacques Cartier written by Ramsay Cook and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacques Cartier's voyages of 1534, 1535, and 1541constitute the first record of European impressions of the St Lawrence region of northeastern North American and its peoples. The Voyages are rich in details about almost every aspect of the region's environment and the people who inhabited it. As Ramsay Cook points out in his introduction, Cartier was more than an explorer; he was also Canada's first ethnographer. His accounts provide a wealth of information about the native people of the region and their relations with each other. Indirectly, he also reveals much about himself and about sixteenth-century European attitudes and beliefs. These memoirs recount not only the French experience with the Iroquois, but alo the Iroquois' discovery of the French. In addition to Cartier's Voyages, a slightly amended version of H.P. Biggar's 1924 text, the volume includes a series of letters relating to Cartier and the Sieur de Roberval, who was in command of cartier on the last voyage. Many of these letters appear for the first time in English. Ramsay Cook's introduction, 'Donnacona Discovers Europe,' rereads the documents in the light of recent scholarship as well as from contemporary perspectives in order to understand better the viewpoints of Cartier and the native people with whom he came into contact.
