Book Aid and Political Conditionality

Download or read book Aid and Political Conditionality written by Olav Stokke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign aid has increasingly become subject to political conditionality. In the 1980s some institutions made aid dependent upon the recipient countries' economic policy reforms. Market liberalisation was the primary instrument and objective. In the 1990s such conditionality was brought one step further; aid was now linked to political reforms, affecting recipient countries' governing systems, requiring democracy, human rights and 'good governance'. This volume looks at these developments and considers the conditionality policies of several European aid donors. Such policies are also considered from recipient perspectives, both from the Third World and Russia, and the issue is also considered from a historical perspective.

Book The European Community and the Developing Countries

Download or read book The European Community and the Developing Countries written by Enzo R. Grilli and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Community has long been the largest trading bloc in the world. It is also on the way to becoming the world's largest integrated economic zone. Its trade, aid and development cooperation policies are therefore of great importance to developing countries. At the same time, the developing countries have continued to be of interest to the Community, both as outlets for its exports and capital investments and as sources of raw materials. This 1993 book analyses and evaluates European Community trade, aid and industrial policies towards developing countries - their origin, main features, logic, evolution and effectiveness in reaching the goals assigned to them. The author sums up the state of Europe's development policies by describing them as regional in scope, colonial in geographical emphasis, discriminatory in their effects and lacking in overall cogency. This incisive re-evaluation illustrates the different strategies the EC countries might pursue in their relations with the outside world as they progress towards fuller economic integration.

Book European Union Foreign Policy and Central America

Download or read book European Union Foreign Policy and Central America written by H. Smith and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-07-17 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an evaluation of the European Community's transformation from a rather uncoordinated small group of member states, with a barely visible foreign policy, into a relatively cohesive and independent foreign policy actor, that is today known as the European Union. The EC's extensive and hitherto undocumented intervention in the high-profile Central American conflict of the 1980s demonstrates a coherence and convergence around a policy that was different from that of the United States and, in the end, more effective. The book also discusses how four key member states - Britain, the Federal Republic of Germany, France and Spain - reacted both to the growing crisis in Central America and to West Europe's conflictual relations with the US. The EC's foreign policy success will not easily be emulated in another international crisis. While the EU remains a non-unitary, non-state actor, it is only in 'non-crises' that the EU, particularly an enlarged EU, will be able to operate an effective foreign policy post-Maastricht.

This publication in English contains detailed explanations, article by article, on all the provisions of the TEU as well as on several Protocols and Declarations, including the Protocols No 1, 2 and 30 and Declaration No 17, having steady regard to the application of Union law in the national legal orders and its interpretation by the Court of Justice of the EU. The authors of the Commentary are academics from ten European states and different legal fields, some from a constitutional law background, others experts in the field of international law and EU law professionals.
