Download or read book Europe as an Economic Powerhouse written by Heino Fassbender and published by Kogan Page Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe as an Economic Powerhouse asserts that Europe's economic performance is far below its true potential. Europe's twin challenges today are to overcome obstacles to meeting its fundamental objectives and to strengthen the economy in the face of increasing internal and external pressures. Part 1 analyses the state of the European Union, with a particular focus on social security, social justice, employment, and productivity. While the analysis recognizes best practice in the United States, it also points out that simply copying features of the US model is not the answer. Part 2 identifies a "European way" of boosting productivity sustainably to turn Europe into an economic powerhouse that is on equal footing with the US. The authors recommend concentrating on four critical objectives: completing the single market, adopting smart regulation, systematically pursuing category definition, and transforming the state system. The last chapter sets out a series of enablers of change including continued harmonization of Europe's educational systems, coping with the demographic problem, and better engagement in the ongoing processes of globalization.

Download or read book Europe s Evolving Role in US Grand Strategy written by Linde Desmaele and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the evolution of the role of Europe in US grand strategy, and unpacks how US administrations have instrumentalized this relationship in pursuit of extra-European objectives. The work considers geopolitical pressures in conjunction with leaders’ strategic ideas to provide an account of the evolution of the role of Europe in the context of US grand strategy. Observers generally agree on the vague notion that Europe has been de-prioritized in Washington’s external affairs. Against this background, the book makes the case that such de-prioritization of Europe in the context of US grand strategy also entails a reconceptualization of the transatlantic relationship, namely as a region featuring long-standing relationships that can at times be leveraged in pursuit of non-European goals. The United States has a long history of seeking European support or acquiescence for its role as the leader of the international system, but whereas during the Cold War Washington enlisted its European allies in a grand strategic struggle against a European power, more recently, it has sought to enlist European allies in extra-European struggles of different types. Thinking about the role of Europe in US grand strategy now requires new theoretical and empirical tools that allow for the recognition of this very fact. Accordingly, this book proposes that strategic ideas on the viability of international cooperation held within the White House crucially shape what – if any -- type of support the United States seeks from Europe on the global stage. In doing so, the book adds important nuance to other accounts proclaiming either the proverbial death of the transatlantic relationship or the eternal and unchanging nature thereof. This book will be of much interest to students of European security, US foreign policy, and International Relations.

Download or read book Revolutionising EU Innovation Policy written by Klaus Gretschmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this ground-breaking book is to inspire the principle of innovation as a permeating program for Europe’s societies. After demonstrating early success from the realization of a single market and single currency, the European cooperation process is falling short of delivering much needed results in policy areas which are key for sustainable economic growth and employment, notably innovation policy. Written by authors involved in an independent tripartite High Level Group on EU innovation policy management, Revolutionising EU Innovation Policy analyses the principle causes and offers solutions in order to increase both efficacy and democratic accountability. Presenting the benefits of an overarching innovation policy, the authors draw attention to issues that have been overlooked by research and technology based approaches to innovation, for example culture and education. Importantly, the book examines the interplay between EU innovation policies and the demands of businesses, enterprises, and social and political organizations to fully deploy their innovation potential.

Download or read book Wisden Anthology 1978 2006 written by Stephen Moss and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2006-10-01 with total page 1490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive tome, essential to all cricket book collectors and Wisden readers. In the early 1980s Wisden published four anthologies that celebrated the best of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack stretching back to its first edition in 1864. Edited by the respected jazz musician, raconteur and cricket-lover, Benny Green, these volumes proved very popular. Wisden readers have long awaited a fifth, updated volume to cover the intervening period, marked by all-time greats like Viv Richards, Ian Botham, Richard Hadlee, Imran Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, Steve Waugh, Brian Lara and Shane Warne. The Wisden Anthology 1978-2006 meets this demand, though it does not follow the style of the Benny Green volumes. Rather than selecting random highlights, Stephen Moss has edited this anthology with the aim of painting a coherent picture of cricket's evolution over the past 30 years. Quite simply it is a story of revolution, beginning in Test cricket's centenary year when England regained the Ashes, Geoffrey Boycott scored his hundredth hundred, Ian Botham took five for 74 on debut, and Kerry Packer's millions ensured the era of deferential players earning a pittance was over for good. Thirty years on, for better or worse, cricket has changed radically. The top players form a highly paid elite who rarely venture beyond the international arena; television calls the tune; the political balance of power has shifted towards Asia; one-day cricket in coloured clothing is ubiquitous; and run-rates rise inexorably while batsmen tear bowlers to pieces as never before. To the gnarled old pros of the 1950s the game must be unrecognisable. A genuine revolution, charted in 40,000 Wisden pages over the past 30 years, is now distilled into a 1,280-page anthology that selects the matches, players, events and controversies which ushered the game into a brave new century.
Download or read book Questioning the Entrepreneurial State written by Karl Wennberg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-23 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic have made the authorities to increasingly turn inward and use ethnocentrism, protectionism, and top-down approaches to guide policy on trade, competition, and industrial development. The continuing aftereffects of such policies range from the rise and seeming success of authoritarian states, rise of populist and protectionist trends, and evolving academic agendas inspiring the reemergence of top-down industrial policies across the world. This open access edited volume contains contributions from over 30 scholars with expertise in economics, innovation, management, and economic history. The chapters offer unique theoretical and empirical contributions discussing topics such as how industrial policies affect risk, incentives, and information for investments. They also address the policy perspectives on new technologies such as AI and its implications for market entry, the role for independent entrepreneurship in increasingly regulated markets, and whether governments should focus on market interventions or institutional capacity-building. Questioning the Entrepreneurial State initiates a much sought-after debate on the notion of an Entrepreneurial State. It discusses the dangers of top-down approaches to industrial policy, examines lessons from such approaches for future policy design, and calls attention to the progress of open and contestable markets in a sound economy and society. “Creative destruction, innovation and entrepreneurship are at the core of economic growth. The government has a clear role, to provide the basic fabric of a dynamic society, but industrial policy and state-owned companies are the boulevard of broken dreams and unrealized visions. This important message is convincingly stated in Questioning the Entrepreneurial State.” Anders Borg, former Minister of Finance, Sweden “Misreading the dynamism of American entrepreneurship, European intellectuals and policy makers have embraced a dangerous fantasy: catching up requires constructing an entrepreneurial state. This book provides a vital antidote: The entrepreneur comes first: The state may support. It cannot lead.” Amar Bhidé, Thomas Schmidheiny Professor of International Business, Tufts University “This important new book subjects the emergence of the entrepreneurial state, which reflects a shift in the locus of entrepreneurship from the individual to the public sector, to the scrutiny of rigorous analysis. The resulting concerns, flaws and biases inherent in the entrepreneurial state exposed are both alarming and sobering. The skill and scholarly craftsmanship brought to bear in this crucial analysis is evident throughout the book, along with the even, but ultimately consequential thinking of the authors. A must read for researchers and thought leaders in business and policy." David Audtretsch, Distinguished Professor, Ameritech Chair of Economic Development, Indiana University

This book was released on 2023-03-10 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses and seeks to answer a number of questions on the current issues facing small states/powers in Europe. How can small European states survive and prosper within a multipolar world of great powers? What part should small states take in European integration? Are EU fiscal and monetary policies allowing for Keynesian economic stimulus when needed and are euro area convergence criteria viable as the world recovers from the COVID-19 crisis? Are small state alliances within the EU useful to counterbalance the influence of the larger EU member states? How far should EU and NATO expansion go? Should it include countries such as Ukraine? Can the EU rely on US leadership of NATO for its security? How should small states relate to great powers seeking to influence Europe, most notably the US, the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation? Do smaller states need to choose a single ally among the major powers? Using an interdisciplinary approach, the author discusses issues of economic policy, international relations and politics, economic and political integration, as well as the effects of global and regional institutions, and priorities in bilateral development cooperation, demonstrating how policies are shaped by the interaction between small states (small powers) and large states (great powers).
Download or read book The Next Superpower written by Rockwell Anthony Schnabel and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ambassador Schnabel dispenses with diplomatic niceties as he assesses the policies of both Brussels and Washington. Schnabel and Rocca offer an inside look at the people and issues that will decide whether the world's most consequential partnership flourishes or flounders. Alert to the economic and geopolitical challenges posed by a more assertive EU, the authors reject the complacency of those who see American "unipolarity" as a license to neglect our allies or who entertain the illusion that we can "divide and conquer" Europe. This book makes clear why the United States must work with the EU - or expect the EU to work against it."--BOOK JACKET.
