Book European Porcelain in The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Download or read book European Porcelain in The Metropolitan Museum of Art written by Jeffrey Munger and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Porcelain imported from China was the most highly coveted new medium in sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Europe. Its pure white color, translucency, and durability, as well as the delicacy of decoration, were impossible to achieve in European earthenware and stoneware. In response, European ceramic factories set out to discover the process of producing porcelain in the Chinese manner, with significant artistic, technical, and commercial ramifications for Britain and the Continent. Indeed, not only artisans, but kings, noble patrons, and entrepreneurs all joined in the quest, hoping to gain both prestige and profit from the enterprises they established. This beautifully illustrated volume showcases ninety works that span the late sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth century and reflect the major currents of European porcelain production. Each work is illustrated with glorious new photography, accompanied by analysis and interpretation by one of the leading experts in European decorative arts. Among the wide range of porcelains selected are rare blue-and-white wares and figures from Italy, superb examples from the Meissen factory in Germany and the Sèvres factory in France, and ceramics produced by leading British eighteenth-century artisans. Taken together, they reveal why the Metropolitan Museum’s holdings in this field are among the finest in the world. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}

Book Ceramic Microstructures

Download or read book Ceramic Microstructures written by Antoni P. Tomsia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-04-30 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, titled Proceedings of the International Materials Symposium on Ce ramic Microstructures: Control at the Atomic Level summarizes the progress that has been achieved during the past decade in understanding and controlling microstructures in ceram ics. A particular emphasis of the symposium, and therefore of this volume, is advances in the characterization, understanding, and control of micro structures at the atomic or near-atomic level. This symposium is the fourth in a series of meetings, held every ten years, devoted to ceramic microstructures. The inaugural meeting took place in 1966, and focussed on the analysis, significance, and production of microstructure; the symposium emphasized the need for, and importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics of ceramics. A consensus emerged at that meeting on the critical importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of ceramic properties. That point of view became widely accepted in the ensuing decade. The second meeting took place in 1976 at a time of world-wide energy shortages and thus emphasized energy-related applications of ceramics, and more specifically, microstructure-property relationships of those materials. The third meeting, held in 1986, was devoted to the role that interfaces played both during processing, and in influencing the ultimate properties of single and polyphase ceramics, and ceramic-metal systems.

Book 2nd European Symposium on Engineering Ceramics

Download or read book 2nd European Symposium on Engineering Ceramics written by F.L. Riley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 2nd European Symposium on Engineering Ceramics held in London, 23-24 November 1987. The meeting was attended by almost 200 scientists and engineers, primarily drawn from industry, and the Sessions were chaired by Mr Eric Briscoe, past President of the Institute of Ceramics. Very effective symposium organisation was provided by IBC Technical Services Ltd. The engineering ceramics are a class of materials which has over some 50 years found well-established applications based on the materials' chemical stability and wear resistance. The last 20 years have seen intensified efforts to extend applications for these materials into areas traditionally occupied by metals, but in which the typical metallic weaknesses of wear, and of high temperature creep and oxidation, are now creating significant problems. These efforts have, however, in many cases been undermined on the one hand by the inherent ceramic weaknesses of brittleness and flaw sensitivity, and on the other by an inadequate understanding, and control, of the basic ceramic fabrication processes required for the low-cost mass production of relatively complex components. The positive results of the efforts of the last 20 years have been the development of a large new group of ceramic materials believed to possess intrinsic mechanical property advantages, of which the transformation toughened zirconias, and the ceramic matrix composites are good examples, together with improved powder production methods and powder shaping processes.

Book New Directions in Ceramics

Download or read book New Directions in Ceramics written by Jo Dahn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Directions in Ceramics explores and responds to contemporary ceramists' use of innovative modes of practice, investigating how change is happening and interpreting key works. Jo Dahn provides an overview of the current ceramics landscape, identifying influential exhibitions, events and publications, to convey a flavour of debates at a time when much about the character of ceramics is in a state of flux. What non-traditional activities does the term 'ceramics' now encompass? How have these practices developed and how have they been accommodated by institutions in Britain and internationally? Work by a wide range of ceramists, including Edmund de Waal, Nina Hole, Clare Twomey, Keith Harrison, Alexandra Engelfriet, Linda Sormin, Walter McConnell and Phoebe Cummings is considered. Following an extended introduction on ceramics in critical discourse, chapters on performance, installation, raw clay and figuration each provide an introductory overview to the area under discussion, with a closer examination of work by key ceramists, and illustrations of relevant examples. The interplay of actions and ideas is a central concern: critical and cultural contexts are woven into the account throughout, and dialogues with practitioners provide a privileged insight into thought processes as well as studio activities.
