Download or read book The Sextant Eureka and Second Cairo Conferences November December 1943 written by Joint History Office (U.S.) and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sextant Conference (also known as the Cairo Conference) was held in Cairo, Egypt, from November 22 to 26, 1943. The three main participants were President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British prime minister Winston S. Churchill, and Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek. The primary topic under consideration for the Allies was planning for the defeat of Japan. The Eureka Conference (also called the Tehran Conference) met from November 28 to December 1, 1943, in Tehran, Iran. This conference marked the first time that the Big Three—Roosevelt, Churchill, and Soviet premier Joseph Stalin—had assembled. The main focus of their discussions was the Allied invasion of northern France (Operation Overlord) to open a second front in Europe in the late spring or early summer of 1944. The Second Cairo Conference, also held in Egypt, lasted from December 2 to 7. In addition the CCS, Churchill and Roosevelt were joined by Turkish president Ismet Inönü for several of the sessions. Operation Overlord again dominated the discussions. For the Pacific campaign, operations in Southeast Asia were a key topic at this conference. The Sextant, Eureka, and Second Cairo Conferences were three in a series of high-level conferences held by the US and British leaders in Washington, DC; Casablanca; Quebec; Cairo; Tehran; Malta; Yalta; and Potsdam to formulate the Allied grand strategy. At the Tehran, Yalta, and Potsdam conferences, the Soviet leader Stalin was also in attendance and played an important role. Book Churchill

Download or read book Churchill written by Stephen Napier and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2018-08-24 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Churchill has gone down in history as one of the greatest leaders the world has ever known. From the day the Second World War was declared he stood out as the only man wanting to take offensive action. But is this accolade deserved? The first few years of the war were nothing short of disastrous, and author Stephen Napier shows how Churchill's strategies - and his desire not to be the first British prime minister to surrender the nation - brought the war effort to the brink of ruin and back again. Did his series of retaliatory raids in response to a German accidental bombing help cause the Blitz? Were plans already at large for the US to join the war, with Churchill as the primary puppet master? Napier explores all this and more in a shocking examination of Churchill's leadership using first-person accounts from his peers and his electorate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late November 1943, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his Joint Chiefs of Staff secretly boarded the battleship USS Iowa to attend a conference in Tehran with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin, where the Allies would come to an agreement on a war plan to defeat Germany. Although Roosevelt’s preparation at sea established the groundwork for the American position on D-Day, it was in the heated and electrifying debates that followed in Tehran—and only through those intense debates—that a deal was ultimately struck. In The Eleventh Hour, critically acclaimed author L. Douglas Keeney explores FDR’s covert conferences on the battleship and provides stunning insight into the formerly secret, behind-the-scenes transcripts from the meetings in Tehran. Brilliantly chronicling the three days of aggressive debates between the heads-of-state, Keeney demonstrates that Tehran, although remembered as a diplomatic conference with a well-known outcome, was in reality chaotic, conflicted, and subject to numerous heated, closed-door sessions—with a petulant, irritable Churchill; a strikingly reserved, detached Roosevelt; and an assertive but unexpectedly diplomatic and even charming Stalin, winning over his guest, President Roosevelt, whose quarters were bugged by the Soviets. Seamlessly stitching together the private papers, diaries, meeting notes, and letters home of those on board, The Eleventh Hour narrates declassified transcripts, exposes surprising secrets, and illuminates how the debates of three men would ultimately end WWII.

Book Unknown Conflicts of the Second World War

Download or read book Unknown Conflicts of the Second World War written by Chris Murray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unknown Conflicts of the Second World War: Forgotten Fronts is a collection of chapters dealing with various overlooked aspects of the Second World War. The aim is to give greater depth and context to the war by introducing new stories about regions of the world and elements of the war rarely considered. These chapters represent new discussions on previously undeveloped narratives that help to expand our understanding of the interconnectedness of the war. It also provides an expanded view of the war as a mosaic of overlapping conflicts rather than a two-sided affair between massive alliance structures. The Second World War saw revolutions, civil wars, social upheaval, subversion, and major geopolitical policy shifts that do not fit neatly into the Allied vs. Axis 1939–1945 paradigm. This aim is to connect the unseen dots from around the globe that influenced the big turning points we think we know well but have really only a superficial understanding of and in so doing shed new light on the scope and influence of the war.

Book Air Commandos Against Japan

Download or read book Air Commandos Against Japan written by Carolyn C Y'Blood and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1943 the U.S. Army Air Forces created what would become the Air Commandos, a unit that marked a milestone in tactical operations in support of British ground forces invading Burma. William T. Y’Blood tells the story of how these daring American aviators trained and went into combat using unconventional hit-and-run tactics to confuse the enemy and destroy their lines of communication and supply. The force comprised light planes to evacuate wounded, transports to move heavy cargo, fighters, gliders, helicopters, and more than five hundred men. The book describes how this top-secret force successfully attacked the enemy from the air, resupplied British commandos on the ground, and airlifted the wounded out of the battle area—eventually driving the Japanese out of Burma.

Book Crusade in Europe

Book excerpt: Within the pages of this book the single most important military figure of World War II has written the story that is destined to become the single most important record of that conflict. Here, from the hand of the Supreme Commander of the Allied forces, is the complete story of the war as Eisenhower planned it and lived it. Through his eyes you can now see the whole gigantic drama of the war -- the strategy, the battles, the moments of fateful decision. Yet this is a warm and richly personal account. No personality among all those described is more clearly defined than that of Eisenhower himself. Through his own account of the long months of waiting and planning and working, through his description of the gradual formation of the great plans for victory, through his record of the history-making hours when the machinery of battle had been launched and could no longer be recalled, you come to know this great man as no one else could describe him to you. - Jacket flap.
