Book Once a Wolf The Science Behind Our Dogs Astonishing Genetic Evolution

Download or read book Once a Wolf The Science Behind Our Dogs Astonishing Genetic Evolution written by Bryan Sykes and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Seven Daughters of Eve returns with a lively account of how all dogs are descended from a mere handful of wolves. How did wolves evolve into dogs? When did this happen, and what role did humans play? Oxford geneticist Bryan Sykes used the full array of modern technology to explore the canine genetic journey that likely began when a human child decided to adopt a wolf cub thousands of years ago. In the process, he discovered that only a handful of genes have created the huge range of shapes, sizes, and colors in modern dogs. Providing scientific insight into these adaptive stages, Sykes focuses attention on our own species, and how our own evolution from (perhaps equally aggressive) primates was enhanced by this most unlikely ally. Whether examining our obsession with canine purity, or delving into the prehistoric past to answer the most fundamental question of all, “Why do we love our dog so much?,” Once a Wolf is an engaging work no dog lover or ancestry aficionado should be without.

If you think politics can get tricky in Washington imagine what they are like in a town where all the residents have a vast repertoire of tricks in their bag. Worse yet, Tailsville has an election EVERY year; although it seems more like seven years to the residents. Mayor Pinochle "Pig Tail" Pug's term is winding down and there are four pooches lined up hoping to succeed him. There hasn't been a major political scandal in Tailsville since the infamous 1972 Tailgate but things are about to change. What's about to happen to the residents of Tailsville is going to make what Vicky Nixon Poodle did in 1972 seem like a walk in Hallmark Park. From the sands of Rawhide Beach on Tails Lake to the Tails "R" Us store in the Tailsville Mall, every pup to pooch in town would never be the same after this election. The results of the election brought every mutt to purebred in Tailsville to join the same pack.

Book Ideocracies in Comparison

Download or read book Ideocracies in Comparison written by Uwe Backes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideocracies, or ideological dictatorships, such as the "Third Reich", the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China have, much more than any other kinds of autocracy, characterized the history of the 20th century. Despite their undeniable loss of significance, ideocracies have not disappeared from the world in the 21st century. This book explores the functioning of ideocracies and analyses the typical interplay of legitimation, co-optation and repression which autocratic elites use in an attempt to stabilize their rule. In the first part of the book, the contributors discuss the conceptual history of the ideocracy notion. The second part offers case studies pertaining to the Soviet State, Italy, the National Socialist Regime, the German Democratic Republic, the People’s Republic of China, North Korea and Cuba. Finally, the third part compares various ideocracies and draws together key themes. Uniting the perspectives of history, philosophy and political science through the use of case studies and systematic comparisons, this book offers a unique examination of ideocracies both past and present which will be of interest to students and scholars researching political regimes, political history and comparative politics, as well as other disciplines.

Download or read book Between Europe and Asia written by Mark Bassin and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between Europe and Asia analyzes the origins and development of Eurasianism, an intellectual movement that proclaimed the existence of Eurasia, a separate civilization coinciding with the former Russian Empire. The essays in the volume explore the historical roots, the heyday of the movement in the 1920s, and the afterlife of the movement in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods. The first study to offer a multifaceted account of Eurasianism in the twentieth century and to touch on the movement's intellectual entanglements with history, politics, literature, or geography, this book also explores Eurasianism's influences beyond Russia. The Eurasianists blended their search for a primordial essence of Russian culture with radicalism of Europe's interwar period. In reaction to the devastation and dislocation of the wars and revolutions, they celebrated the Orthodox Church and the Asian connections of Russian culture, while rejecting Western individualism and democracy. The movement sought to articulate a non-European, non-Western modernity, and to underscore Russia's role in the colonial world. As the authors demonstrate, Eurasianism was akin to many fascist movements in interwar Europe, and became one of the sources of the rhetoric of nationalist mobilization in Vladimir Putin's Russia. This book presents the rich history of the concept of Eurasianism, and how it developed over time to achieve its present form.

Book Eurasier Dog Encyclopedia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Caris Michelle
  • Publisher : Independently Published
  • Release : 2021-08-23
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 56 pages

Download or read book Eurasier Dog Encyclopedia written by Caris Michelle and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-08-23 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eurasier is a loving, gentle and devoted dog that will fit into any family that can give it the attention and companionship that it craves. A medium-sized Spitz, it was conceived and developed in its native Germany over the past fifty years, and is sure to become a more familiar sight in the UK following its recent admission to the Kennel Club breed register. From the outset, it was intended that the Eurasier would be a companion dog, and the qualities of an even temper, calm disposition, and affectionate nature have thus been promoted throughout. It needs to be fully integrated into its family, accompanying its people everywhere, from walks in the park to trips to the supermarket. Though it dotes on those closest to it, the breed is reserved, and even uneasy, around strangers, who need to take their time before forcing their attention on an unwilling recipient. Socialisation can help with this, but the Eurasier may not be ideal for those wanting a dog as a social focus while walking on busy streets. Despite its recent origins and small gene pool, this is an intelligent and healthy breed, with a life expectancy of 12-14 years. Time will tell whether this good health will be maintained as the number of breeders keen to capitalise on the Eurasier's growing popularity expands. This book includes appearances, information, history, health and care, puppy caring, feeding dogs and more.
