Download or read book Neotropical Insect Galls written by Geraldo Wilson Fernandes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book brings to light the most recent findings on the biogeography, biodiversity, host plant induction and natural history of gall inducing insects in the Neotropical region. We attempt to summarize the work done so far in the region, promote several syntheses on many aspects such as host induction, host specialization, distribution among the several vegetation types and zones, the origin of super hosts and the mechanisms leading to geographical patterns in their distribution. Furthermore, the book constructs new perspectives for deeper understanding of galling insect evolutionary ecology and biogeopgraphy in the region.

Download or read book Revision of the European species of Omphale Haliday Hymenoptera Chalcidoidea Eulophidae written by Christer Hansson and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European species of Omphale are revised, including 37 species, of which 11 are new. All species are described, thoroughly illustrated, and included in gender-specific identification keys. Two new morphological character-sets are introduced for the classification, male genitalia and wing interference patterns (WIPs). Both sets are used to identify species, and the former is also useful for classification of species-groups. Hosts are known for 14 species and all are primary endoparasitoids of immature stages of gall-midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). Host preferences are unique for each species, suggesting host specialization as a driving force for speciation. Several of the species are known only from females or have a strong female-biased sex-ratio, indicating thelytokous parthenogenesis. Distributional data point to a pan-European distribution for most species. New synonyms and combinations affect the nomenclature in subfamily Entedoninae.
Download or read book Research on Chrysomelidae Volume 1 written by Pierre Jolivet and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-07-31 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are an estimated 40,000 species of chrysomelids, or leaf beetles, worldwide. These biologically interesting and often colorful organisms, such as the tortoise beetles, have a broad range of life histories and fascinating adaptations. For example, there are chrysomelids with shortened wings (brachypterous) and elytra (brachelytrous), other species are viviparous, and yet other leaf beetles have complicated anti predator-parasitoid defenses. Some species, such as corn rootworms (several species in the genus Diabrotica) constitute major agricultural crop pests. Research on Chrysomelidae 1 is a the first of an intended series of volumes on the Chrysomelidae edited by Jolivet, Santiago-Blay, and Schmitt.
Download or read book Caterpillars in the Middle written by Robert J. Marquis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-22 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caterpillars are excellent model organisms for understanding how multiple selective forces shape the ecology and evolution of insects, and organisms in general. Recent research using the tools of modern molecular biology, genetics, metabolomics, microbial ecology, experiments conducted at a global level, network analysis, and statistical analyses of global data sets, combined with basic natural history, are yielding exciting new insights into caterpillar adaptations and ecology. The best way to view these research advances is within a framework of tri-trophic interactions. This is a timely topic for research given the central role of caterpillars and plants in the ecology and trophic structure of terrestrial communities. This book is unique in that it contains chapters from a team of experts on a diversity of key topics within caterpillar-plant interactions. This volume brings together contributions by researchers from around the globe, working in both tropical and temperate habitats, and in human-managed and more natural habitats. It is a significant contribution to our understanding of insect biology, and the role that insects, as represented by caterpillars, play in a world increasingly dominated by humans and one in which threats to insect biodiversity are mounting. Download or read book Chalcidoidea of Iran written by Hassan Ghahari and published by CABI. This book was released on 2021-01-27 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The superfamily Chalcidoidea (Insecta, Hymenoptera) contains in excess of 26,000 described species worldwide, but with an estimated total diversity of more than 500,000 species the vast majority of species have yet to be discovered and described. Most chalcidoid species are parasitoids of hosts in at least 12 different insect orders, attacking the egg, larval or pupal stages, though phytophagy and other life cycles and hosts are known. Iran is the 18th largest country in the world and has a rich and diverse insect fauna, including Chalcidoidea. It is extremely interesting from a biogeographic point of view, and a paradise for an entomologist. This book summarizes the results of all prior research concerning species diversity of Iranian Chalcidoidea, including host records and distribution records by province in Iran as well as world distribution by country for 1,351 species of Chalcidoidea recorded from Iran through the end of 2019.

Download or read book Biological Control in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Joop C. van Lenteren and published by CABI. This book was released on 2019-12-21 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book summarizes the history of biological control in Latin America and the Caribbean. Few publications provide historical detail and the records are, therefore, fragmented until now. By bringing information together in this book, we offer a more complete picture of important developments in biological control on this continent. There are a wealth of text, tables and references about the history of such projects, and which were succesful and which failed. This will help plan future biocontrol projects. An overview is provided of the current situation in biological control for many Latin American and Caribbean countries, revealing an astonishing level of practical biological control applied in the regio, making it the largest area under biological control worldwide. The final part describes new developments and speculates about the future of biological control in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Download or read book Coffee Pests Diseases and Their Management written by J. M. Waller and published by CABI. This book was released on 2007 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the origins, botany, agroecology and worldwide production statistics of coffee, and the insect pests, plant pathogens, nematodes and nutrient deficiencies that afflict it.
