Book Freshwater Algae of North America

Download or read book Freshwater Algae of North America written by John D. Wehr and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-12-15 with total page 935 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater algae are among the most diverse and ubiquitous organisms on earth. They occupy an enormous range of ecological conditions from lakes and rivers to acidic peat swamps, inland saline lakes, snow and ice, damp soils, wetlands, desert soils, wastewater treatment plants, and are symbionts in and on many plants, fungi, and animals. In North America, the variety of freshwater habitats colonized by algae is very rich, and offers an enormous and fascinating range of environments for their study. They form the base of most aquatic food webs and are critical to studies of ecosystem health. Algal ecologists and taxonomists play an important role in the understanding of aquatic ecosystems: their biodiversity, productivity, interactions with other organisms, and water quality. This book provides in one volume a practical and comprehensive guide to the genera of freshwater algae known from North America. The format combines the necessary ecological, taxonomic and methodological information for all scientists working in aquatic environments, whether their specialty is in environmental monitoring and water quality assessment, biological composition, ecology, evolution, or molecular biology.Key Features* The first complete accounting of North America's freshwater algal genera in more than 50 years* Includes a guide to the current literature on species identification in each group of algae* High-quality photographs and drawings of more than 770 genera* A clear, easy-to-use introductory key to the diagnostic chapters* Synthetic chapters on freshwater habitats, use of algae in environmental assessment, and control of nuisance algae* Contributions from 27 experts in all areas of freshwater algae* Extensive literature citations* Companion volume of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates 2nd edition, edited by Throp and Covich

Book ECOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT OF ALGAL FLORA BIODIVERSITY IN LENTIC HYDROSPHERE

Download or read book ECOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT OF ALGAL FLORA BIODIVERSITY IN LENTIC HYDROSPHERE written by Dr. Vaibhavi Prashant Patil and Mr. Arjun Sudhir Shahu and published by Ashok Yakkaldevi. This book was released on 2022-08-27 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is useful for life activities of human beings. It is used for various purposes like drinking, irrigation, transport, sanitation, power generation and industries. Water is the most important and essential abiotic factor of all kinds of ecosystem and it also forms the habitat for enormous varieties of organisms. In other words, water forms the largest ecosystem, that is aquatic ecosystem of the biosphere. Global water is broadly classified into two classes viz fresh water and salt water. Fresh water present in lentic and lotic form. The rise and fall in chemical and physical factors of water bodies frequently affect the flora & fauna, alternating their number and diversity. About 97% of earths water is ocean water. It is saline and not useful for drinking and irrigation. Rest of 02% is in the form of ice at Polar Regions.

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aigae Abstracts is the first in aseries of bibliographies on water re sources and pollution published by IFI/Plenum Data Corporation in cooperation with the Water Resources Scientific Information Center (WRSIC). It is produced wholly from the information base compris ing material abstracted and indexed for Selected Water Resources Abstracts. The bibliography is divided into volumes according to the publication dates of the source documents. Volume 1 contains 569 abstracts cov ering publication dates up to and including 1969; Volume 2 contains 730 abstracts covering the years 1970 to 1972. The material included in this bibliography represents computer selections based on the presence of a form of the word "alga" somewhere in the referenced citation. Substantively, the material typifies WRSIC's "centers of com petence" approach to information support of the Office of Water Re sources Research (OWRR) of the Department of the Interior. Most of the references in this bibliography are the work of the center of competence on eutrophication at the University of Wisconsin. The indexes refer to the WRSIC accession number, which follows each abstract. The Significant Descriptor Index is made up of a fraction of the total descriptors and identifiers by which each paper has been indexed. It represents weighted terms that best describe the informa tion content; this status is indicated by the asterisks which precede them. The General Index includes all the remaining descriptors and identifiers by which each paper in this bibliography has been indexed.
