  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press

Download or read book From Lisbon to the World written by George Monteiro and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fernando Pessoa is one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. Until some years ago known in the English-speaking world only among a minority of connaisseurs, his work is finally becoming available in English translations, and more are in the process of reaching the literary public. Born in Lisbon in 1888, Pessoa was only forty-seven when he died, but he left behind a staggering number of unpublished manuscripts that are still being screened and brought to light. George Steiner heralded the day Pessoa discovered his major Portuguese heteronyms, for no country had ever seen the birth of four great poets in a single day. That was a reference to the personae Pessoa created, the famous heteronyms Alberto Caeiro, Alvaro de Campos, and Ricardo Reis, besides the man himself -- all poets in their own right with their biographies and even critical exchanges among themselves. Today well over a hundred Pessoa heteronyms are known, including, notably, the semi-heteronym Bernardo Soares, author of The Book of Disquiet, presently available in two English translations. Lately, another Pessoa is emerging -- an English writer, as well as a thinker. Indeed, having been educated in Durban, South Africa, where his stepfather was the consul of Portugal, the poet had a strong English education that shaped his life and thought. George Monteiro has been in the forefront of the uncovering of this side of Pessoa. Author, among many other works, of The Presence of Pessoa: English, American, and Southern African Literary Responses, and Fernando Pessoa and Nineteenth-Century Anglo-American Literature, in this volume Monteiro continues to explore and interpret the world of Pessoa to English-speaking readers.

Book Philosophical Essays

Download or read book Philosophical Essays written by Fernando Pessoa and published by . This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fernando Pessoa claimed to be inhabited by thousands of philosophies, all of which he intended to develop in his unfinished project of English-language Philosophical Essays. The resulting fragments were never published by Pessoa himself and almost the entirety of them are presented in this edition for the very first time in history. This volume exhibits Pessoa s musings and wild insights on the history of philosophy, the failures of subjectivity, and the structure of the universe to reveal an unexpectedly scholarly, facetious, and vigorous theoretical mind. Written under the pre-heteronyms of Charles Robert Anon and Alexander Search, these texts constitute the foundation for the fabrication of Pessoa s future heteronyms. They are the testimony of a writer who referred to himself as a poet animated by philosophy. Through editor Nuno Ribeiro s careful critical efforts, a new and fundamental facet of the work of one of modernity s most seminal geniuses has now been brought to light in a remarkably reliable and clear fashion. Book Vitorino Nem sio and the Azores

Download or read book Vitorino Nem sio and the Azores written by Francisco Cota Fagundes and published by Portuguese Literary and Cultur. This book was released on 2007 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equating Vitorino Nemésio to "Azoreanity," Universality, Iridescence, Confluence, and Eroticism, draws inspiration from the content of the essays herein included and will not surprise anyone familiar with Nemésio's non-posthumous works, with the possible exception of the very last of the lexemes, "eroticism." Nemésio's oeuvre, starting with the collections of short stories Paço do Milhafre (1924) and Mistério do Paço do Milhafre (1949), and extending to the poetical collections La Voyelle Promise (1935) and Festa Redonda (1950), to the novel Mau Tempo no Canal (1944) and the travelogue Corsário das Ilhas (1956), encompasses a range of subjects profoundly rooted in the Azorean archipelago. At the same time--and here, besides Mau Tempo no Canal, we must emphasize the poems of Nem Toda a Noite a Vida (1952) and O Verbo e a Morte (1959)--the thematic and formal scope of Nemésio's oeuvre does in no way distance itself from the totality (and, to the extent that the word is valid, centrality) of Portugese culture and, as well, from the western Great Tradition of which it is an inextricable part.
