Book excerpt: L’objectif de ce travail est d'étudier de façon expérimentale et théorique certains aspects de la dispersion en milieux poreux spatialement périodiques. L’étude expérimentale a consisté tout d'abord à mettre en place un nouveau dispositif de fabrication de milieux poreux par photolithographie, permettant de réaliser d'une manière simple tous les milieux souhaités. Des expériences de dispersion en milieux poreux ont été alors réalisées pour deux types de milieux poreux périodiques bidimensionnels (en ligne et aléatoires) formes de cylindres de section carrée et pour différentes directions du vecteur vitesse moyenne. La confrontation de ces résultats avec ceux obtenus numériquement par ailleurs a montré une très bonne concordance. Certains résultats expérimentaux ont parfois montré un comportement transitoire ne pouvant pas être décrit par l'équation de convection-diffusion classique. Pour trouver la meilleure façon d'appréhender ce caractère transitoire, trois méthodes ont été développées : la méthode non locale, la méthode des moments et la méthode de prise de moyenne à deux zones avec fermeture rigoureuse et fermeture classique. La méthode non locale (exacte) qui utilise les fonctions de green. Elle est très lourde à appliquer aussi bien pour calculer le tenseur de dispersion que pour résoudre le problème macroscopique. La méthode des moments ou la méthode de prise de moyenne avec fermeture rigoureuse permet de trouver une description correcte en termes de moments de distribution de soluté jusqu'à l'ordre 2. Néanmoins la fermeture rigoureuse ne peut être appliquée aux milieux périodiques. La méthode de prise de moyenne avec fermeture classique donne des coefficients différents de la fermeture rigoureuse mais la solution macroscopique obtenue dans les quelques cas d'application testes est similaire à la solution exacte.

In addition it will be of interest to those who enjoy discovering links between scientific disciplines that seem unrelated at first glance. In writing the book the contributors have tried to put GM’s ideas into perspective. During his working life, GM was a genuinely creative scientist. He developed innovative concepts whose usefulness goes far beyond the confines of the discipline for which they were originally designed. This is why his work remains as pertinent today as it was when it was first written.
